By this stage of the term ALL

requirement that parents sign the
booklets. If you have not seen
your child's booklet please ask
them about it. If your child has

2010 YEAR 11 SUBJECT SELECTIONS
Most Year 10 students have returned their
subject selections for Year 11 in 2010 and I am
very pleased that Kanahooka High School has
been able to satisfy the preferences of the vast
majority of students. The school has now
been able to add Chemistry to the subject
lines and discussions with Dapto High School
on Wednesday this week were held to
identify additional subjects that will be
shared by both schools. This initiative began
last year and allows additional subjects to be
offered across Dapto High and Kanahooka
High schools and is a great example of our
ability to meet the interests of students
through joint initiatives with other schools.
1st GRADE ST GEORGE DRAGONS
PLAYERS ADDRESS STUDENTS
Two first grade players presented the school
with a framed poster outlining the St George
Dragons NRL Teams values of Respectful -
Responsible – A Team Player, at a special
assembly on Tuesday afternoon. The
players also
presented the
school with
gift packs to
be distributed
to students as
part of
Kanahooka’s
Positive
Behaviour in
School merit
awards.
The school’s PBS team worked after school on
Monday to develop an action plan to guide
this initiative to its next stage at Kanahooka.
Redefining the school’s mission statement,
examining the school’s values of excellence,
respect, responsibility and fairness and
launching the PBS logo competition will take
place over the coming month. Students,
parents and staff will all have the opportunity
to contribute to these activities and discussion
sheets have been placed in the staff common
room. More information has been placed on
the school’s website.
PRINCIPAL SURPRISED BY STUDENTS
As part of the school photographs last week,
Year 12 students dressed up for their ‘Muck
Up” photo. Two of the boys made a surprise
visit to the principal’s office to have their photo
taken.
FOUR NEW PREFECTS INDUCTED
Thomas Walsh, Amy Joyce, David Cardoso
and Mikajla McDonnell were inducted into the
Prefects at Monday’s assembly. Ms Thatcher
congratulated the four new members and
acknowledged the important role prefects play
in the life of the school.
CONCRETING CONTINUES
Building refurbishment continues at
Kanahooka with the paths being relaid for the
second time. The upgrade of the first of the
science labs, in the 600 block, is due to be
finished this week. Next week work will begin
on the labs in the 400 block.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR
SUCCESS (PBS) NEWS
The Dragons support the PBS
program and regularly visit all the
PBS schools. Kanahooka High
School was fortunate to have the
Dragons address the assembly on
Monday.
The regional PBS co-ordinator, Ms
Robyn Christofides interviewed
Nathan Frier and Alex Ranieri
from the Dragons, about the
Dragons values – Respect,
Responsibility and Being a Team
Player. The team members then
spoke about how these values
were applied to their personal and
professional lives. They talked
about the relevance of Kanahooka
High School’s values – Respect,
Responsibility, Fairness and
Excellence to school life and life in
the community.
Cassandra Sweetman of Year 9
won the Kanahooka High School
PBS draw. The students who had
received PBS merits (3 playground
merits) were presented with
signed posters by the Dragons.
These students were Britney
Aikman, Diana Millard, Heath
Lockwood, Chloe Rasmussen,
Daniel Sonnleitner, Mikayla
Leplaw-Stollery, Melody
Shortland, Jack Kearton. (Students
who were on the Ski trip or were
absent need to see Mrs O’Sullivan
for their signed poster).
The Dragons presented the school
with a framed poster of the
Dragon’s values and gift packs for
future rewards for our students
who show positive behaviour.
Corey Cotterill was also presented
with a signed ball and hat.
Thank you to all students who
showed respect by sitting quietly
and listening to the speakers at the
assembly.

KHS @ UOW
On Tuesday, 25th August, nine Year 11
Biology students joined with over one
hundred students from other local high
schools at the University of
Wollongong’s Biological Sciences
building for a day of investigation.
The large group was welcomed by Lisa
Hutton, the UOW Science Faculty
School Liaison Office, who had gone to
considerable effort to organise the day’s
activities.
After dividing into three groups,
students were shepherded by
University students studying to be
Science Teachers, to the different
activities. Students experienced the
stress of note-taking in the lecture
theatre, how to use microscopes in the
biology laboratory and “Science Speed
Dating” where students move to
different rooms in the buildings for
short talks discussing the different
research projects being undertaken by
faculty staff. The students heard how
flies and other insects are used in
murder investigations to determine the
time of death, about new species of fish
being discovered in the marine parks
along the south coast, how plants
species are determined and identified
and what is being done to combat flesh-
eating bacteria.
At lunch students experienced some of
the social activities that are part of the
vibrant life on a university campus.
