FEAST OF THE EPIPHANY - 3 JANUARY '16
Homage to the Saviour of All Nations
Epiphany is the manifestation/revelation of Jesus as the King/Saviour not only of the Jews, but of all human beings. Today’s feast reminds us that God loves all nations and cultures of the earth, and that He communicates with us in many, often unforeseen ways – through internal inspirations, through external events, through people, and through His Word. Many times these factors are combined in an interplay that becomes clear only in hindsight. The challenge is for us to “decipher” God’s message and respond to it with faith, persevering generosity and courage, just as the Magi did. Let us include in our Mass intentions - all the peoples of the world and all those who are working hard to bring about harmony and cooperation among all human beings.
READINGS: 3 JANUARY '16 - Year C 1st Reading: Is 60:1-6 Isaiah spoke of the glorious future which God had in store for Jerusalem. The Church applies this eschatological vision to herself, the “New Jerusalem,” blessed by the special presence of the incarnate Son of God, and to which all peoples of the world are invited to belong. 2nd Reading: Eph 3:2-3, 5-6 St. Paul reminds us that, with the coming of Christ, the barrier of estrangement between the Jews and the Gentiles was shattered. Both were and are invited to form one single “People of God” under the headship of Jesus, the Saviour of all. Gospel: Mt 2:1-12 The Magi are champions of faith and perseverance in a good enterprise. They are our models in following the star of God’s inspiration and the guidance contained in His Word.
RESPONSORIAL PSALM - Feast of the Epiphany - 3 January '16
"Lord, every nation on earth will adore you!"
FEAST DAY FOR WEEK OF 4 Jan '16 - 10 Jan '16 - Thurs: St Raymond of Penyafort
READINGS NEXT WEEK: THE BAPTISM OF OUR LORD - YEAR C
1st Reading: Is 42:1-4,6-7 2nd Reading: Acts 10:34-38 Gospel: Lk 3:15-16,21-22
EPIPHANY OF THE LORD The Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord has a long and rich history. For
centuries it commemorated a host of events in the life of Jesus; the birth and
baptism of Jesus, the visit of the Magi and Jesus’ first miracle at Cana. Two
themes are central to the readings of the Epiphany; the symbolism of light
and the manifestation of God to the Gentiles. Isaiah speaks of ‘your light has
come, while darkness still covers the earth’ (Is 60:1). Matthew recounts the
‘star in the east’ which lights the way to Jesus. Matthew’s Gospel is the only
book to mention the Magi. The detail and imagery contained in the story can
easily distract us from the message that the Incarnation of God was revealed
to foreigners or strangers who were seeking to find God. Celebrating the
Epiphany should help shift our focus to the bigger picture, that Christmas is
not just about a festive family gathering, a baby and a manger. It reminds us
that Jesus came among us, so that he could be found by all people seeking to
find truth. What am I doing to help others meet Christ?
