With summer arriving at last and the great weather, the calendar is full and all events seem to be very well attended. Don’t forget to send your pictures and a short (or long!) write-up about where you have been and what you’ve done, to me, at the editors email address.
It’s been a busy month for me with almost two weeks away in France. Nine of us went, on 5 trikes and 2 solos, to Sarlat, in the Dordogne region - beautiful countryside. I love the French motorways, where everyone drives on the inside lane and only pulls out to overtake. They’re all so thoughtful to other drivers. But then I suppose that’s easier with so little traffic, comparatively. And some lovely twisting and turning roads as they climbed high through the mountains. What beautiful views! We had a 6 bedroom house, with a swimming pool, tennis
court etc. for the week, and it was very near the town so an easy walk to local restaurants in the evenings. So, not much time to get the mag together this month. I did the calendar before I went away so it’s important to check with the website for changes, Cancellations or additions this month.

Hi Everybody and welcome to the June edition of Tales from the Riverbank,
Since we last met at our May club night we have had some really great rides which
have been blessed with unbelievably good weather, which makes the ride even better.
It's been an interesting week or two in the Wibberley household. My main computer
decided it's had enough and would not allow me any access to anything, including
this months magazine piece for Sue. For a change, this month's magazine piece was
almost finished and just needed to be looked over by a second pair of eyes. A trip to
P C World was needed, and quickly! A few hundred pounds later, the new PC was
unpacked and installed. I'm just waiting for my very nice son-in- law to come and do
his magic to extract the memory from the old hard drive and put it on the new one.
Many happy returns to Barry Adams & Hagrid who are celebrating big birthdays
this month - congratulations guy!.
Thames Valley also celebrates its sixteenth birthday this month, many happy returns
Thames Valley.
Ride-outs:
The Fish & Chip run to Eastbourne with a visit to Shaw Harley-
Davidson on May18th was our first ride after club night.
A very well organised ride for a Saturday and very well attended.
Well done Bernie C, Sue D & Nick for crewing the ride - a great day out!
On June 1st Thames Valley visited Warr's Harley Davidson in Chelsea to
celebrate Warr's 90th anniversary. What a day it turned out to be!!
By the time we were ready to leave Maidenhead the ride-out had
grown to 35 bikes and 43 members, one of the best attended
ride-outs for a long time, fantastic. We managed to arrive at
Warr's en masse with the whole ride-out together which
made a few heads turn as we rode past the dealership.
The team at Warr's put on a great day to celebrate a
milestone in their history for the thousands of people who
had made the pilgrimage to Chelsea to celebrate with them.
Many thanks to my tail & marshal, Bernie C & Sue M,
on the day, not an easy ride with Hammersmith Flyover
being closed, but interesting. Well done guys.
Don Director
Membership Report:
Last club night a total of 70 members, 53 Full & 17 Affiliated, attended May’s
Club Night.
Our total membership, as of the 1st June, now stands at 199 which breaks down to
130 full members and 69 affiliated. A great move in the right direction.
Can I remind all of you who have not yet signed your release forms and sent your
membership renewal fees back to Fred, they are now overdue and he will be chasing
those people at club night.
We also have a few members whose HOG Memberships have expired, some as
long ago as February. To stay a member of this great club of ours you do need to be
a paid-up Hog member.
Forthcoming Events:
Sunday, June 22nd World Ride Day - 1
This year’s world ride will be one to remember. The day starts with meeting at
Chieveley Services and a ride to the Swansea Dealership on the M4, with time to
grab a bargain or two in the merchandise dept. The trip home will be more of a
scenic ride via Neath, Merthyr Tydfil, Ross on Wye, Cheltenham & Oxford.
Not for the faint-hearted!
Monday, June 23rd World Ride Day - 2
Thames Valley Picnic Day in Bournemouth. A nice steady ride to Bournemouth
and a picnic lunch in the Lower Gardens with time for a stroll along the pier and an
ice-cream before the ride home.
Both rides will be accepted of Miles for Fun and the mileage program.
Well another magazine piece completed for the second time this month,
Ride safe and continue enjoying our club - and have fun!

Sue says... Hello all..
Great news for those ladies who
want to ride their very own Harley
Davidson! H-D are launching two
new bikes with smaller, 500 cc and
750 cc, engines specially designed to appeal to the female market.
With 1 in 10 bikes in the USA being sold to women they are trying
to encourage more of us to ride. The new bikes will have lower
seats, smaller handle grips and different foot rest positions. They
are hoping that the new bikes will become a treasured ‘little black
number’ in every woman’s garage. ( Let’s hope they make the
clutches easier to pull and they are not all black!) To be honest
while excited at this news I am a bit
disappointed that they haven’t
designed an entry level bike for
learners, but maybe one day.
I understand that the Saturday
Social at Thorpe was well supported,
and that the sunshine put in a welcome
appearance. These Saturday pub meets
were designed to help keep club
members in touch with each other over
the winter months when ride-outs were
few and far between, and they have
been very successful.

However, as there is so much going on
over the summer, both in the TV HoG
calendar and in our own family diaries,
I haven’t arranged any socials for June,
July or August.
If you are all disappointed to hear this, or
had a great venue in mind, then please let
the committee know and we can organise
something impromptu.
Once again the sun shone for Dave’s ride
-out to Stratford Upon Avon. I don’t know
how he manages it but the sun comes out every time he organises a
ride. Fifteen bikes were escorted on a lovely countryside meander
stopping at Annie’s Tea Shop on the way. It was a lovely surprise
to see Pat and Ron awaiting our arrival and taking photos of us
crossing the swing bridge. Annie’s is lovely gem of a tea shop by
the canal at Thrupp and is highly recommended, so much so that we
stopped there on the return leg too!
Our activities officer, Toni Charles, has set herself a huge chal-
lenge in order to raise money for the local Make a Wish Foundation.
She is planning to ride 837 miles
leaving John O’Groats at sunrise
on 21 June and be at Land’s End
on the same day. If you would
like to help inspire Toni on her
journey and help her reach her
target of £250 then I am sure
she would be thrilled if you were
able to sponsor her at
www.justgiving.com/Toni-Charles.
Good Luck from all of us at
Thames Valley, Toni
2014 Ireland BikeFest - Killarney by CJ
The question was, where to go this year? We already had plans for England, Scotland & Wales so that left only one choice - Ireland! Ireland and the Ireland BikeFest, an open, 3-day bike festival for all makes of motorcycle and a free to enter event located in beautiful Killarney, Southern Ireland.
Day One. Thursday 29th May: Two bikes both with pillions, CJ & Di and Paul
(aka Doughnut) & Julie, set off @ 0700hrs for Holyport for the Irish ferry, taking frequent stops on route. Upon arrival, and only sprayed upon by road water, we checked in and almost rode straight on board the ferry. We secured the bikes to the metal loops attached to the deck by ratchet straps with yellow padding which protected the seat of our bikes, a very easy to use method and one that keeps the bike stable / safe. The crossing was millpond calm and the weather fair, so after breakfast and a few photo opportunities we rested until we arrived in Dublin. We rode to Dublin which is like most major cities with inconsiderate car drivers, lol. The plan was to stay overnight after a long day travelling from England. The hotel staff were great and offered us a few locations to park our bikes which we were happy with, but not before people admiring our bikes took some photos which Paul and I have become accustomed to, lol. We ended up parking our bikes in staff parking which was kindly offered by the car park manager, a very friendly guy. That evening, after a quick freshen up, we met down at the bar where we were treated to very entertaining bar staff, one in particular liked to call Paul, Kenneth and me, Sid, from the Carry On films. This was a great start to Ireland and a theme that continued throughout our stay. The next morning, after a full Irish Breakfast, we set off on our way to Killarney, to the BikeFest, travelling through some beautiful countryside. A National Forest and twisty roads with mountain views and lakes, and a fantastic waterfall, on route.
We met polite drivers and were blessed with good weather which was another common theme for the entire trip. Upon arrival in Killarney, with only a few minor wrong turns, we looked for the Gleneagles Hotel which is where we were staying for the weekend of the Festival.
8
Once we found the hotel we checked into our rooms which were like self-contained flats @ home complete with lounge settee, armchair & TV with a separate bedroom and Jacuzzi bath which Di nearly lost herself in! lol. That evening we went down to the outside stage & Harley bar area where we met four very familiar Thames Valley members sunning them-selves! Yes, honest, it was lovely. Our meeting was received with rapturous cheers and of course lots of hugs & kisses. The evening progressed nicely with some great bands and dancing going on through the early hours. Our Baz wasn’t even stopped by a very swollen ankle, and Pat taught me some nice moves to my already vast knowledge of Freestyle dance moves, lol. Paul’s Julie wasn’t to be outdone either, she flowed with Baz’s dance floor moves for everyone’s pleasure, because this was in the entrance to the Harley bar. Chapters from Europe and England and of course all the non-HOG people were in the mix which just added to the great atmosphere. The choice of places to settle within the rally site was varied from the Outside Stage performances, which played during the afternoon as well as the evening, another large stage inside the Gleneagles Hotel, and smaller bands playing in cosy areas, or the bar of the hotel. So, some-thing for almost everyone. The next day, after having a look around the various stalls where we met even more Irish characters who made us laugh, we set off to Dingle following a beautiful coastal road with beaches which would not be out of place in Spain. This ride-out took us around some of the most beautiful coastal bays, one of which is where Ryan’s Daughter was filmed.
9
Then onto quaint little fishing bays with a selection of cafes & pubs to dine in. At one point our screens beaded with water! Not rain, but low cloud as we climbed into the mountains. After a full day the day before, we decided to have a rest day browsing around the varied stalls and watching the ride-out, which was great, in particular the return where we had great positions for viewing. Then we had the customs bike show which had categories for Harley, old and not so old, British, Rat Bikes, Japanese etc all held on the lawns which was real nice. This was the day I met Marjorie Ray who recognised me straight away! Yeah, ok, I think I scared her with my eagerness, lol. This 3 day event passed by so quickly and by no means have I covered it all in this write up but if anyone wants to know more about it please don’t hesitate to contact either myself or Paul Houghton, Dave or Sue Brown or Pat & Baz for more info when you see us next. Our last day, after another Irish Breakfast, we took a very twisty road up to Ladies View, which was well worth going in the wrong direction for, as it was only a few miles away. The ride home only got better and better with mountain roads snaking through pine tree forests, wow, and timely stops in good Irish Pubs & coffee houses. Next stop was where we started in Ireland, back in Dublin, where the four of us reflected on our trip over a very nice meal and a few more pints of Guinness & Kilkenny’s. The morning arrived and off we set to the ferry with yet another millpond crossing and good weather. The only time we got wet was in Wales or England. I recorded a tad over 1,300 miles for the entire trip and have got to say it did not disappoint in any way. It had all the elements of a Memorable Trip - Great bikes to ride, Great friends, Great weather, a Great Rally, Fantastic Hospitality and Harley Davidson yet again pulled it out of the bag along with the Gleneagles Hotel. And last but not least, wonderful Irish people who happen to have a beautiful country with some great roads. I would, without any hesitation, recommend this Rally to fellow TV members. I hope you have enjoyed this write up and look forward to loads more Miles per Smiles with some Old and New friends. CJ

Warr's was founded on the Kings Road in 1924 by Captain Frederick James Warr, becoming an official Harley-Davidson dealer that same year.
At that time the flagship of the Harley range was the 'Silent Gray Fellow' which would
have cost a princely £85.
In 1949 F.J's son, Fred Warr, left the Royal Air Force and went to work for his father. Although post war business was very tough, by the 1960's Fred jnr had become
Britain's Harley-Davidson distributor.
In 1999 the company moved into a new purpose built 20,000 sq ft dealership
designed by architects Kilburn & Nightingale and built on the site of the original 1920's store.
On June 1st, 2014, the 90th anniversary of Warr’s was celebrated.
Thames Valley Chapter made a great impression when 41 people on 31 bikes made the
ride to London.
12
Twenty four members of Thames Valley Chapter filled
the front car park of the Star at Waltham St. Lawrence
for the 3rd poker night of the season. The food was
good, considering the chef was on holiday!
It was a great success, as
usual, with the best turnout
so far. Linda

The Killarney BikeFest is the most laid back Harley Davidson event I’ve been to so far The atmosphere was friendly and cheerful, the bands were great, the setting very picturesque, with plenty of interesting places to ride to. The local Irish people and council embraced the event with open arms and made everyone feel very welcome.
Even the ferry crossing was painless, and the ride across Ireland to
get to Killarney was stunning!
If you haven’t been, it’s one put on your ‘To Do’ list. I’m definitely
going again Doughnut

A 10 year old girl is on her way home when a big guy on a motorcycle drives up beside her. After running next to her for a little while, he says, ‘Hey little girl, you want a ride?’ ‘No!’ says the little girl and continues to run. Motorcycle rider comes back up beside her and says, ‘You get £10 if you come for a ride with me.’ ‘NO! ’ She shouts and runs down the street. Motorcycle rider catches up once again and says, ‘OK, my final offer. You get £20 and a big fat bag of sweets if you come for a ride with me.’ The girl stops and stares at the man and screams, ‘Listen daddy, it was YOU who bought a Suzuki instead of a Harley - live with it!’

THAMES VALLEY HOG - How We Roll !
Please note that HOG insists that ALL participating riders get a briefing before
they ride with an organised group.
If you miss the briefing you may not participate in the ride !
Your full attention is required at the briefing. It is an important part of safety for
the whole group. Please try not to interrupt unless you have a genuine
question. For some crew members, it is the most daunting part of their
responsibility. You will hear much of the same information each time but please
support your volunteer road crew by being patient.
Listen carefully to the overview of
the route.
Take note of any hazards which
may be mentioned.
Make sure you understand the
DROP-OFF SYSTEM. If not, ask a
member of the Road Crew.
Identify the LAST MAN / TAIL
RIDER at, or during, the briefing.
Make sure you know how we operate the staggered file as many
Chapters operate this slightly differently. Thames Valley HOG DO
NOT change position in the staggered file when a man is
dropped off.
Riders MUST stay at their drop off point until the last man (tail man)
arrives.
Use an arm signal when dropped off to indicate the direction of the
route. (Switch off your indicators- even your hazards can confuse other drivers!)
The drop off will be indicated precisely, but only stop precisely at that
location if you are happy to do so. Alternatively, stop as close as
you can and consider walking back to mark the route.
26
Leave at least 2 seconds between
you and the next rider in your line
of the formation. In single file, you
should always have a 2 second
gap between riders.
The LEAD RIDER is NOT a part of the staggered formation. He/she
will move to different positions in the road depending on what he
needs to do next. Do NOT change your position in the stagger behind
the leader.
Close up at stops and junctions, buy DO NOT pull up directly next to
another rider unless you are both coming to a complete stop.
No overtaking within the group.
Please leave 7 -10 second gaps on motorways and dual carriage-
ways between groups of 5 riders.
Overtaking other traffic on dual carriageways: Only pass / overtake
when you reach the obstruction. Do not pull out to allow the rider in
front to pass. (He/she may not be ready to pass and you will hold up
other road users unnecessarily).
Every rider MUST fully observe the whole group, NOT just the rider
ahead, in order to be alert to changes in speed
Use your mirrors frequently.
Be courteous to other road users (even if undeserved!)
Leaving the group:- Pull over and wait for the last man, then signal
your intention to leave
Missing a drop-off:- In the unlikely event that you miss a dropped
marker, or take a wrong road, DON’T PANIC! Continue to a safe
point to turn around and go back to pick up the ride at that point.
The rest of the ride should follow you and the ride will get back
on track.
Breakdown procedures:- Last man or his/her marshal will stop and
assess your needs.
Be aware of other riders joining who are not part of the group.
Do not use unauthorised signals. This can confuse following riders and
other road users.
All riders must be aware that...
YOU ARE DEEMED TO BE IN CONTROL OF, AND RESPONSIBLE FOR, YOUR
VEHICLE AND YOUR RIDING AT ALL TIMES IRRESPECTIVE OF ANY GUIDANCE
OR INSTRUCTION FROM ANY MEMBER OF THE ROAD CREW. YOU MUST, AT
ALL TIMES, RIDE WITHIN THE LAW AND OBEY ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATIONS.
