JamesVanAllenwasaphysicistfromMt.Pleasant,Iowa,whodiscoveredthatthereweretwozonesofenergeticparticlesofradiationsurroundingEarth.Hiscosmicrayexperiment,launchedJanuary31,1958,consistingofaGeigercounterandataperecorder,showedthattherewerebeltsofradiationcirclingtheEarth.Hisdiscoverybroughtanewunderstandingofcosmicradiation.
