The Advantage e-News
Happy Independence Day! Boy has the summer gotten off to a fast & great start! Right out of the chute we kick-off and christened the Merrill Festival Grounds with an outstanding rodeo! Congratulations to the great volunteers of the award-winning WI River Pro Rodeo organization that puts on a show that just keeps getting better year after year! This is one fine oiled local volunteer organization. And just in time, the Bier-man Family Aquatic Center opened the same weekend to the joyful cries of hun-dreds of kids & parents! What a beautiful facility & it’s right here in Merrill. The Bierman Family Founda-tion has certainly made a difference in Merrill & the aquat-ic center is one that I’m sure Jane would be proud to have her name on. The Merrill City Band kicked off their summer season at Normal Park with fun Olympic style games for the kids & rousing music for everyone. Be sure to catch their concerts every Wednesday thru this month at 7pm. And speaking of Normal Park Gazebo Nights concerts kick-off on July 7 at 6pm with concerts every Thursday thru August. Then on July 8 is the Chamber’s annual Movie in the Park at dusk sponsored by Marshfield Clinic. Join us for the movie under the stars as we feature “Spy Kids”. We also have a brand new event taking place at the Merrill Festival
Grounds on July 9—an An-tique Tractor Pull at 12noon followed by the main event at 6pm with the National Tractor Pullers Association. Of course the main event of the month at the festival grounds is the Lincoln County Fair July 20-24. And there are several new shows planned thanks to that great new grandstand! Wristbands are on sale now at the chamber of-fice. And rounding out this month
is the 2nd Annual Lobsterfest on July 30. This festival is held at Ballyhoos & is a fundraiser for the
Safe Ride Home Program. The lobsters are flown in alive & fresh & are served with all the trimmings for $40. They sold out last year, so get your tick-ets now at the chamber office. There is also a lot of activities taking place for the kids this month at T.B. Scott Library. For a listing checkout of web-site at www.merrillchamber.org We’ve also been upgrading here too. Beside the great new website, our office has a new copier that is quicker, cleaner & more cost effective. We finally purchased new chairs that makes meetings so much more accommodating. And new shelving/storage. We have outgrown our office & needed to find ways to make it more efficient, cost effective & able to accommodate all of our current needs. A big thank you to the volunteers who helped make some of this work possible & to our mem-

bers who helped make it af-fordable. We also kicked off a couple new programs—first we kicked off our first joint Young Pro-fessional gathering at The Sawmill with the Wausau Chamber on June 1 & had a great turnout. I encourage anyone ages 21-45 to join us & meet some awesome millen-niums! Next we are kicking off our new Diplomat Program this month. This will be an great tool in our Workforce Develop-ment Program that shows new hires everything wonderful about Merrill. So if you have a new hire that you want to make welcome, contact us so we can match them up with the appropriate diplomat. And of course this is the time of year that we celebrate our independence on the 4th of July. While we are celebrating with families, let us not forget how we obtained these free-doms & independence & those that have fought the wars at home and around the world in the name of freedom. Let every sparkler & every firework exploding in the sky remind us of the celebration that is America—home of the free and the brave. From my doorway to yours, have a safe holiday and expe-rience Merrill this month, there is so much going on! There is so much to be proud of! Debbe Chief Executive Officer

New Website Our new website has launched and it very
user friendly. You find that it is easier to
maneuver in and that some new features
have been added.
One of the best features is the long awaited
member web pages. Each member can
have their own web page that you manage
yourself. This is a great tool for businesses
that do not have their own website or for
the business who wants to post coupons or
daily specials. If you have your own web-
site, your hotlink will still work to move
visitors to your site, but a single page may-
be just what you are looking for either or
not you have your own website.
You will also notice that there are now
separate tabs for tourism and the chamber
foundation. These will be great tools espe-
cially if you are wanting to make a donation
to one of the many project funds that the
foundation operates.

The Business of the Month for July is Les & Jim’s Lincoln Lanes located at 1208 North Center Avenue in Merrill. Their telephone number is 715-536-9405. They open Monday thru Friday at 11:00 am & at Saturday & Sunday at 3:00pm.
Les & Jim’s has been part of the Merrill fabric for more than 41 years with the 3rd generation now operating the business.
Les & Jim’s was established on May 31, 1969 by the father & son team of Les & Jim Bares as a bowling alley. In 1974 the duo added a large banquet room & in 1984 they expanded the bar. In order to make the lanes state-of-the art new automatic scoring, new seating & synthetic lanes were added in 1998 & the bar was renovated in 2011.
Les retired in 1985 & now the 3rd generation has taken over the management/ownership of the family run business. Jim retired in 2011 after 42 years. Jim’s son Mark & son-in-law Jim Arndt are carrying on the family tradition.
With the 3rd generation in place, the banquet hall received a facelift in 2014-15. Great colored up-lighting was added, fresh paint & beautiful chair covers now give banquet events a polished, up-dated feel & look.
Les & Jim’s is still a bowling alley first & foremost
