Commander’s Message Hello Legion Family
This past month has been like a roller coaster ride at the Post. The State of Florida allowed all private clubs, Veterans Organizations, and Social Organizations to re-open for business. After two weeks they said we had to close. Then 4 days later they said we could open. The American Legion Department of Florida continues to lobby the State to recognize that American Legions should not be classified as a "Bar" status in their classifications. We are a Private Veterans Membership organization that sells food, like restaurants, to our members and therefore should not be treated just as a Bar. We met with our State Commander who is working with his staff and State Lobbyists to get our descriptions changed. To get the newsletter to our members in an appropriate time, we have to write our articles in the middle of the previous month so, as you are reading this I hope the Post is back to normal.
As I mentioned last month, our State Commander, Rick Johnson, came to our Post and presented us with the "Wilson Timmons" Award for the"Best All Around Post" in the State of Florida. He also presented Matt Dunleavy, our Post Service Officer, the Award for "Best Service Officer" for the State of Florida. He also presented David Width, the "Runner-up Award for Sergeant of Arms" for the State of Florida. The Commander emphasized how proud the Department was of the job Post 318 has done over the years and how other Posts want to model their success after ours. We are very proud of that statement.
Membership renewals are now coming in. If you have not renewed yours yet, please take the time to send it in. We need all the members we can get. Membership is the key to any post success.
This month I would like to make Fran Romano our "Member of the Month". She has really helped me and the Post try to keep things in place and going forward with all of the State Mandates. Thank You, Fran, for all that you do.
During this pandemic, I hope all are doing well and their health is good. Be safe and pray this ends soon. God bless you all and God bless the U.S.A.
Daryl Bowie, Commander

Auxiliary Chaplain Hoping all our members are remaining healthy and safe and following social distancing and proper hygiene (washing your hands). I still am not able to visit people but keep me aware of any sick member and I can send a card or make a call and cheer them up. Remember, a smile or kind word goes a long way. As God gives us opportunities, we can extend grace and show compassion with a greater touch.
For God and Country, Karen Fox-Patterson, Auxiliary Chaplain – Unit 318 772-418-1515
Auxiliary ReportHello Ladies,
Here we are in August already. Hope you are doing well and following the guidelines. It's time to renew your 2021 dues. Be an early bird if you renew by October 31st, $35.00 payable to American Legion Auxiliary Unit 318. This year we will be donating monetary gifts to the schools we support every year for supplies. Drop off your donation at the Post and it will be forwarded to the Auxiliary. Thank you. Our next meeting is August 15th at 10:30am.For God and Country, Sue Pfohl, President 708-369-5446
Service Officer Report
The VA is making changes to the way veterans and eligible beneficiaries submit reimbursement claims for traveling to receive medical care. Currently, the VA will reimburse the following groups for traveling to receive medical care at a VA facility or a VA-approved private facility:
1. Veterans with service-connected disabilitiesrated at 30% or more
2. Veterans traveling for treatment of a service-connected condition
3. Veterans receiving a VA pension4. Veterans traveling for scheduling compensation
or pension examinations5. Veterans whose income does not exceed the
maximum VA pension rate Veterans in the above categories, and some traveling companions, may be reimbursed 41.5 cents per mile for qualifying travel but can change annually based on inflation. There is a deductible amount of $3 for a one way trip or $6 for a round trip with a maximum of $18 per calendar month. That means if you have a 20 mile round-trip to reach your VA appointments you would be reimbursed $2.30 ($8.30 for the 20 miles minus the $6 deductible). Tolls, parking, and the cost of public transportation are also reimbursed. Veterans who must travel with an attendant may also be reimbursed for their companion's travel in certain circumstances Currently, those seeking reimbursement for medical travel must file their claims using a paper form or specially designated kiosks at VA medical centers. After the on-line filing mode is made available, the kiosks will be phased out. Hard-copy claims may still be used. By the end of November, the VA electronic travel claim program should be available nationwide. Eligible veterans and beneficiaries will be able to visit VA's website, AccessVA, to file their claims. The new program will be known as the Beneficiary Travel Self-Service System or BTSSS. The new program promises to speed payments and cut down on errors that occur when using paper travel claims.
Matt Dunleavy, Post 318 Service Officer
I hope everyone is staying healthy and safe. It's nice to see cars and members at the Post after being closed for such a long time. The Riders had their first meeting since March od July 4th. Our elections were held and the Board remains the same. We had a good turnout, 20, considering the pandemic. Last month I was able to meet a disabled veteran at the Motor vehicle office and pay for his registration and plates. He asked that I thank the American Legion members. We also had the privilege of doing a 90th birthday Ride-By for a Korean War veteran to acknowledge his birthday and his service to our great country. For the Cause, Not the Applause, Our "Wheelbarrow of Cheer" is on display at the Post. It is really loaded with top shelf items. Tickets are one for $5 or three for $10. Please support our causes. Wednesday Night Dinners have resumed. Our dinner is the fourth Wednesday of each month. We feature Chicken Parm or Francaise with salad, bread, and dessert for $9. Thank you.

2nd Vice Report As we continue to consider the wellbeing and
safety of our members we will slowly provide more activities as circumstances improve. At this time we are offering daily lunches from 11:30am to 3pm and Sunday
breakfasts from 8:30 to 11am. Future activities will be posted on the board outside as they can safely be added.

Hoping all of our members are healthy and safe during these trying times. Even though I have had some health issues myself, I am still trying to get the Chaplain notes in the newsletter, with a little assistance. Member Eugene "Gino" Insogna has gone to Post Everlasting. Pray for the family. The best way to get something done is to begin. For God and Country,Butch Bates, Post Chaplain 772-579-8650

On July 1st, 2020, we started our early-bird membership for 2021. As most of you know this is very important to our post. With the closing of the post, we still had to pay our bills. The renewals are our only means to keep our post going until we are allowed to reopen. Please send in your renewals in as soon as possible. Below is a renewal form. Please be sure to include your current address, phone number, and e-mail address and which organization. This ensures we have the correct information of our members as some members have moved, made changes in their phone number or transfered to another post. By the time this is sent we will hopefully be back to some kind of normal. Stay Safe and Healthy!
