Rule #1
It indicates a Possessive in a singular noun.
Ex: The boy’s hat . . .
In the Plural Possessive formEx: The children’s playground . . .
And in the Regular PluralEx: The boys’ hats . . . (More than one boy)
Which sentence is correct?
Back in my day, the street’s where full of children because none of their parents wanted them in the house.
Alicia insisted that the marijuana was not her’s; someone had planted it.
Who’s book is this?
Bartholomew IX was a good king who believed in following the people’s wishes.
Rule #2
It indicates the omissions of letters and figures in dates.
The summer of ‘78You’re a good friend. (You are)Don’t ever change. (Do not)
Which is correct?
If your going to San Francisco, be sure to see the Golden Gate Bridge.
You’re the reason that we where able to win the House Cup!
The winter of 19’8 was the worst winter Erie has ever experienced.
Don’t you think it is strange for the dogs to act like that.
Rule #3
It indicates the plurals of words and letters
How many f’s are in giraffe?What are the do’s and don’t’s?
There are no if’s, and’s, or but’s!
Which is correct?
Professor McGonagall doesn’t give out many A’s.
How many don’ts did you use in your essay?
I believe that I write the Qs better than I can write Bs.
The Rule of ITS and IT’S
A common mistake!
“It’s” stands for: “it is” or “it has”
And if it does not stand for “it is” or “it has” then the correct usage is “its”.
Its OR It’s - Which is correct?
I don’t like to drive when its snowing outside.
A German chemist figured out the structure of the benzene molecule by picturing a snake grasping it’s tail.
