The Art of Neighbouring, Session 4: Motives Matter
• This study is about community, not evangelism; we are not the only
people who think knowing your neighbours is important…
• Getting to know your neighbours makes stronger, more resilient
communities.” NZ Red Cross

• “There are Neighbourhood Support groups across
New Zealand. Together, we act to prevent crime,
promote safety and care for one another. As part of
a group, you’ll cope better in civil emergencies,
provide safe environments for our vulnerable
communities.”
• “If you don’t know your neighbour, start today and
say gidday.”

• “Helping to build neighbourhoods where you watch out for each
other”
• “Finally an easy way to learn the name of the nice neighbour from
down the street.”

Session 4: Motives Matter
“This is not an evangelism strategy. And if evangelism is
your only motive, then you won’t be a very good
neighbour. However, if neighbouring is done with the right
posture, then people who don’t know God will most
certainly come to know him.”
The Art of Neighbouring, Chapter 7
Why do we share about Jesus?
• Is it about love for God and the people God created and loves?
•Or, is it about us? Our sense of obligation/guilt
“You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colours in the world.
God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public
as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m
going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light
stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—
shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By
opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with
God, this generous Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16 Message
Pray that I’ll know what to say and have the courage to say it at
the right time… the Message that… I am responsible for getting
out.
Ephesians 6:19-20 The Message
Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you
to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with
gentleness and respect.
1 Peter 3:15 NIV
Art of Neighbouring, Ch.7 Motives Matter
• Ulterior verses Ultimate motive:
• Ulterior = concealed, manipulative
• Ultimate = final, ‘longed for destination’
“We don’t love our neighbours to convert them,
we love them because we are converted.”Art of Neighbouring, Chapter 7
• People don’t want to be projects.
• Love is compelling, just be involved.
• Love God, make friends!
