shops this August. The résumés will then be posted on a new tab on The Briar Club website to be viewed by our members seeking 2015 summer interns. These workshops are complimentary. If your students or graduates cannot attend the workshops but have a résumé they would like to include on the website, please forward it to [email protected] and it will be posted. I applaud Mr. Mordy’s initiative and hope many of our young students and graduates take advantage of such a great opportunity.
MASTER PLAN UPDATE
Our Parking Garage is nearly completed. If all goes as planned we should be occupying it the third or fourth week of July. There will be security access gates to the garage that will operate by reading your front license plate. For those who don’t have front plates, you will be given a proximity card that will be read at the gate. We are finalizing all the details at this time and aren’t sure what format we’ll be requesting them in, but please be on the lookout for a request for your license plate numbers. It’s our plan to have them in the system prior to the garage opening so the access gates will flip open welcoming you into your new garage on your very first visit. Very exciting!!
Once the garage opens, the construction on our new Clubhouse is scheduled to begin. Our architects, project manager and Building Committee are feverishly working on all the final details. We’re currently at the City for final permitting that is expected to be awarded within the next couple of weeks. As we are all aware, the economy and building activity in Houston is robust. We can see building projects everywhere in and around our big city. The downside of all this great economic activity is price inflation. Our project has not been immune to it. While we anticipated a degree of upward pricing in the planning process, some of the pricing we’re now looking at for portions of our project have caused the Building Committee and Board to prudently pause and rethink our schedule of some of the components in each scheduled phase. This is the reason why the Fitness Center addition and new Lap Pool construction has not yet begun. We are taking a careful look at the Club’s financing and are working with our lender, architect and construction team to ensure all components of our Master Plan will be built as promised and voted on by membership. We are a few weeks away from reformulating our plan and schedule. Please be patient and be on the watch for another
communiqué addressing all of these concerns.
MEMBERSHIP DRIVE CONTINUES
The very good news is that our membership growth is robust. Thank you to all the members who have been actively recruiting their friends, business associates and family members they like to join the club. Membership initiation revenue is ahead of budget and ahead of the record pace we achieved last year. This helps give the club confidence as we work through our Master Plan project. If you know a potential member, please forward their contact information to Linda our Membership Director at [email protected]. They should join now because our initiation fee is scheduled to increase from the current $27,000 to $30,000 as of October 1, 2014.
This is an exciting time for our club with the blessings of so many opportunities before us. Thank you to all of membership for your enthusiastic participation in all areas of the club. As always, I seek and appreciate your feedback on your experience at the club. Please stop in the office, send me an e-mail, fill out a comment card, tell a supervisor or manager or give me a call.
At your service;
RICHARD A. LAREAU, CCM, CCE

As I pen this communiqué, I have just given a big hug to Gina DePamphilis, our Director of Aquatics, for leading our Briar
Barracudas to an undefeated season. Congratulations to all the swimmers, coaches and parents. You've all worked hard, had fun and have shown great Briar Club sportsmanship and spirit. Our Summer Swim Team and year-round swim programs have truly blossomed and are a big reason our club is the place "Where Families Focus on Fun." Now is the time many of our club families head out of town on summer vacation or are off to camp. Have fun, see, learn and explore, and know your club will be waiting for you when you get back. Travel safe.
CONGRATULATIONS GRADUATES!
There is a new section in this edition of our newsletter which features our high school and college graduates. We hope this becomes a tradition! It is such an exciting time in one's life. They've worked and studied hard; we should all be proud of their achievements. Congratulations to you all. Also in this edition, is an advertisement (page 4) sponsored by club member David Mordy promoting résumé writing and networking work-

While on the Board of Directors, the Directors chair the various standing committees which monitor most every activity area of our club. The standing committees are comprised of any members and/or their spouses, regardless of membership class, who have an interest, and usually participate, in the activity area the committee monitors. Committees are advisory to the Board of Directors. They make recommendations and occasionally suggest that the Board take action in their area of oversight. Our General Manager attends all committee meetings along with the Department Head of that activity area. Our General Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Club and is charged with carrying out the policies and procedures set by the Board of Directors. He is expected to operate our club in accordance with our club’s Bylaws and House Rules. Our governance model provides a fluid flow of information from members to management to the Board of Directors and vice versa.
An important adjunct committee appointed each year by the Board or Directors is the Nominating Committee. This committee is charged with the responsibility of interviewing and slating Equity Members of our club who are interested in serving on the Board of Directors. This committee is formed as each member of the Board of Directors appoints an Equity Member of our club to serve on the Nominating Committee. Once this committee is set, it is then given autonomy from the Board of Directors to put forth a slate of candidates deemed qualified to serve our club for election. Our club Bylaws dictate that two candidates must be slated for each vacancy on the Board. Because three Board of Director positions open each year, six candidates will be slated. We are in the process of finalizing the Nominating Committee for 2014. In the meantime, if you have any interest in serving on our club’s Board of Directors, please express your interest to any Board member or send me an email and I will forward it to the Nominating Committee once it is announced.
I highly encourage all members to become active in our club governance. The time commitment for committee membership is usually minimal, requiring generally one luncheon meeting per month. Participating on a committee provides you with a forum where you can voice your ideas and convey your unfiltered opinions and feedback to other members, management, and the Board of Directors working towards making our club the best for you and all other members.
Finally, if you have any concerns or issues about any aspect of the club that you would like to discuss, please feel free to contact me.

Club PresidentA LETTER FROM THE
DEAR FELLOW MEMBERS,
The excitement continues for our club as Phase One of the Project nears completion. Once we start parking in the new
garage, we will begin moving forward Phase Two which includes the new Clubhouse. The phasing of construction is key to enjoying a functional club for the duration of the Master Plan project. We must give notice and thanks to our Building Committee and all of its members for all their continued dedication and long hours they have put into this project. The members of the Building Committee are Rob Sigler (chairman), Scott Frasier (past chairman), Bruce Derrick, Cletus Dodd, Mary Wyatt, Joseph Santamaria, and Chris Boeker. Please let them know how much you appreciate the time and effort they have devoted to benefit our Club. The Building Committee is a good example of how you, as a member, can get involved in the governance of our club. All members have numerous opportunities to be involved in the decision making process at both the committee and Board of Directors level.
Those with Equity Membership in our club have the privilege to elect their fellow Equity Members to the Board of Directors, or to run for a position on the Board themselves. Each Director serves a three year term.

As the weeks draw nearer to the opening of our new 500+ space Parking Garage on Timmons, we would like to take the time to update our Members on pending garage security mechanisms.
There will be two gated entry lanes into the Parking Garage, monitored by security personnel and license plate recognition software. Prior to opening, we will be gathering license plate information for all Member vehicles. Proximity cards will be issued for Members without front license plates. Both mechanisms will aid in the security of our garage, as well as expedite garage entry on your regular visits to the Club.
Stay tuned for further communication as details are finalized.

The Briar Club takes safety very seriously at all times, most especially during the busy summer months. Here are three ways that The Briar Club Aquatics Department trains and prepares our lifeguards during this season.
LIFEGUARD REVIEW COURSE
All Briar Club Aquatic Employees are required to participate in and pass the American Red Cross Review/Challenge course in Lifeguarding, CPR, First Aid, and AED. Each year, the Club certifies an average of 60-70 Aquatics Employees.
THIRD-PARTY LIFEGUARD AUDIT
The American Red Cross examiner arrives unannounced to The Briar Club and will videotape the staff on duty that day. They verify if the lifeguards are scanning the pools correctly, rotating correctly from station to station, and observing their behaviors on the lifeguard stand. The examiner films two guards and challenges them verbally & physically on a series of skills necessary to do a proper job. In addition, the examiner asks for documentation verifying that the pools are operating correctly. The Club has three lifeguard audits each summer.
WEEKLY IN-SERVICESFOR ALL LIFEGUARD STAFF
The Briar Club Lifeguard staff members are required to attend weekly in-services. During the weekly in-services, the lifeguard staff members are required to swim a minimum of 500 yards, are given updates on weekly events, are updated on any issues and member service goals, participate in team building events, and are reviewed or challenged on different skill that may need some improvement.
Safety Spotlight:LIFEGUARDS
Employees of the MONTH
Jon Diller joined The Briar Club team in 2008. Since joining our Aquatics team, he has dedicated himself to become certified as a WSI (Water Safety Instructor), LGI (Lifeguard Instructor), and an AFO (Aquatics Facilities Operator). All these certifications enable Jon to bring the highest quality of training programs for our lifeguard staff and operate our pools at a very safe and sanitary level. Jon is also responsible for ensuring that supervisors and management staff at the Club are CPR/AED certified. He additionally heads up the Club's Safety Committee, which has a representative from every department charged with ensuring a safe environment for members and staff in all areas of the Club.
Jon's title today is Aquatic Manager. He is Gina's right-hand in managing all areas of our pools and lifeguards. But most of all, Jon is a certified AANG - "All Around Nice Guy"; that's my designation for him because of the wonderful demeanor he consistently has about himself every day he is at the Club. He consistently displays a true concern for the care and safety of all the children of the Club and loves to teach them how to swim. Please join me in congratulating Jon as he receives this recognition as Manager of Merit. Well deserved!

APRIL - ARACELY GONZALES
Aracely has worked for The Briar Club for seven years, serving in Housekeeping and Laundry. She oversees the laundering of all the towels used at the Club and ensures that the locker rooms and restrooms are well-stocked. She lives in West Houston with her three daughters Ashley, Nicole, and Kaetiy. At the Club, Aracely enjoys being creative and taking initiative. During her time off, she enjoys books and music, spending time with her daughters, and playing games outdoors. Aracely is studying to obtain her license in massage therapy and reflexology.
MAY - ALEJANDRO RINCON
Alejandro has been an a la carte waiter at The Briar Club for a year and a half. He lives in the Heights, but grew up (in a town near a volcano!) in Mexico. His favorite part about his job is interacting with the members, providing customer service and building friendships with members and staff along the way. During his time off, Alejandro enjoys running, dancing, and watching TV. He is inspired by people with a message for peace and a purpose to help others.

What an incredible start to the summer. We have had great membership usage of the Club the past couple of months, including Sunday Night Cookouts - and I do not forsee any of that changing. We are passionate about food, and there are some of you who share the same passion.
I have some members come to me and ask, "Chef, what should I eat?" This has allowed us the opportunity to produce other things besides great burgers and salmon. I encourage you to venture out and try something new. The more "adventurous" with dining that the membership becomes, the more creative our team can be. We have developed a great Food & Beverage team and I hope that you will use your Club even more to experience what we are all excited about.

The Food & Beverage team has grown in number over the past few weeks and all of the new staff members have been greeted by the membership with a warm welcome. The biggest addition to the team has been our Deck Hands, who are eager to assist at the Snack Bar and around the pool deck. Everyone has been a great addition to the Food & Beverage team as we are working to create memorable experiences with each visit to your Club.
The Briar Club Cocktail List has taken off! There are several drinks that almost everyone is in agreement with. In the next few weeks, I will be reworking several of the drinks that I hopw will be just as enjoyable as the current favorites. As well, beginning in July, you will notice an overhaul of your wine list. We will keep Club favorites while adding recognizable, quality wines. The focus of the list will be having wines at your Club that you have enjoyed at other restaurants, bars, or at home, with the value of the Club.

1,000 Push-Up CHALLENGE
RICHARD ANDRAEDirector of Wellness & Recreation
I feel like I've grown old gracefully, but still have the nagging injuries and struggles with weight issues as the years add up. As I was waiting to get my hair cut the other day, I was reading an article in Redbook magazine with the intriguing title, "The #1 Weight Loss Program". Want to guess what it was, according to this article? Running! Now, I disagree with this for several reasons.
YOU CAN'T OUT-EXERCISE YOUR EATING All the examples given of these weight loss results also talked about how they had to change their eating habits. Hence the first rule of sensibility, being "You Cannot Out-Exercise Your Eating." I have seen many runners who are overweight; one of the most popular runners who started the running phenomenon, Jim Fixx, died at age 52 because he made unwise decisions forming eating habits and had smoked cigarettes until age 36. He was predisposed to this and as a result, he had one artery 95% blocked, one 85% blocked, and one 70%. Be sensible in your eating habits and start making yourself accountable. Diets don't work in the long run! The Briar Club has a licensed dietician available to members, Nicole Graham Fennel, who can help with your nutritional program.
CHOOSE AN ACTIVITY YOU LIKE, NOT WHAT SOMEONE SAYS IS BESTSecond rule of sensibility: "Choose a cardiovascular activity that you like, not what someone else says is best." All cardiovascular activities will help you lose weight. While running does burn more calories in a shorter period of time, it is still a high-intesity activity. Running puts 2-3 times your body weight on the knees and back. Walking is a much better choice, but if you must run, lose some weight first, take it slow and make sure you get expert advice on running shoes and your running form (not from Foot Locker or shoe stores in the mall). Luke's Locker and Fleet Feet have professionals that can give you good advice on an appropriate shoe for you.
A CALORIE IS A CALORIE IS A CALORIEThe last rule of sensibility is, "A Calorie is a Calorie is a Calorie." You have to balance the body checkbook every day. If you make more of a food deposit that you did an exercise withdrawal, then you will gain weight. Keep track of everything you eat and all your exercise. Be accountable to yourself! The two biggest mistakes that people make are that, a) they underestimate the amount of food they eat, and b) overestimate the amout of exercise they do. Try to do the reverse. For example, if you work out with weights in the gym for an hour, the truth is that you probably lifted between 25-40 minutes (depending on rest times between machines). I usually figure one minute per exercise if you do it in correct form for 10-12 repetitions.
Lastly, in my opinion, you do not need P90X, Insanity, Cross Fit or any of those other programs that offer quick results in a short period of time. Like their predecessors High Impact and Tai Bo, they are an orthopedic's dream for future employemnt if done incorrectly, as I see so many people doing these exercises. There are no easy solutions or quick plans to get in shape. You did not get out of shape in a short period of time, and you are not going to fix it in a short period of time. Again, the heart is a muscle like any other and does not need to be worked out any harder. What is killing us is our eating habits more than our exercise habits!
In all things, be moderate and sensible and live healthier! If you want to meet with me to discuss any issues or concerrns, please contact me at [email protected] or (713) 552-2134.
As we get older, we are constantly reminded that maybe some of the things we did earlier to stay in shape by exercising, or get out of shape by eating, might have made our latter years a little more enjoyable if we had made more sensible decisions.

Pilates UPDATE
LARRY ZIKESPilates Coordinator
Stronger, faster, better balance, more flexibility, fewer injuries, faster recovery -- it all adds up to better performance, regardless of your sport. Pilates can help you with that by enhancing stretch, strength, and control. These three elements are in each move of every Pilates workout.
STRENGTHThe truth is, you already have a fair amount of strength; what you may not have is coordination of that strength. Pilates gets your muscles coordinated at a deeper level, enabling you to perform amazing feats of strength in a very short amount of time. Pilates puts the muscle you already have to optimal use, rather than piling on more ineffective and unnecessary bulk. Less bulk and enhanced internal coordination yield greater speed.
STRETCHIncreased flexibility goes hand in hand with a Pilates practice; and yet there is so much more to it. The Pilates way of stretching is not painful nor depleting. Pilates shapes the muscle to be longer, leaner and more supple. Gaining more flexibility feels great, not painful!
CONTROLAside from gaining better control over the hips and trunk, which improves balance, Pilates gives you a sense of physical empowerment and confidence. When you are calling on yourself to perform optimally as an athlete, Pilates training pays off.
