Vision 2020 - You’re Invited!
As I shared with you in last month’s newsletter, in 2020, State Street UMC
will celebrate 200 years of faithful service and witness in Bowling Green.
How great is that?! Not many churches can boast (in the Lord) about such a
rich history and tradition. I also mentioned last month how we would be
putting together a Vision Team to assist us in creating a strategic ministry
plan for our congregation to help us approach our next 200 years in ministry
with hope and great expectation. Well, I am so pleased to let you know that
the Vision 2020 Team has been assembled and has begun their work with Sue
Weber, our Vision 2020 Team facilitator.
I am going to stop right there and let the Vision 2020 Team Chairperson, Ben
Lawson, share, as Paul Harvey used to say, “the rest of the story.” Here is
what Ben wants you to know.
As Dr. Jay wrote in last month’s Circuit Writer, we as a congregation are
beginning a journey together to create a strategic ministry plan for our
church! I and the entire Vision 2020 Team are very excited for this
opportunity our Church family has to discover together all God has in store
for State Street. This process of evaluating what makes State Street great
today and what we can dream for State Street tomorrow is going to be
through a process called Appreciative Inquiry. Together as a church family
we are going to enter this process to discover what we love about State Street,
and what we can dream for our future. As we go through this process we want
all members of the congregation to be included and understand what is going
on through Appreciative Inquiry. Check out the insert inside this newsletter
for a quick introduction to Vision 2020, what we can all expect and how we
can all participate!
I am deeply grateful, as I know you are as well, for Ben and the whole team
for their willingness to be a blessing to our church in this way. I know that
you join with me in praying for them as they help lead our church in this
important work. Please, please, please read the enclosed insert to learn all
about the Vision 2020 process and how you can be a part!
Much grace and peace!
Dr. Jay

State Street UMC Family,
Thank you all so much for the love and support that
you have poured out on me! You have all played an
important and indescribable role in my spiritual
formation that has led me to be a missionary on the
World Race! As I embark on this next journey
throughout Asia, I hope you all know that I carry to
live together in community as the body of Christ
and I believe that community is not limited by state
lines or country borders. I will be covering you all
in prayer daily and I ask that you keep me and my
squad in your prayers over the next 11 months .
Thank you all so much for everything that you have
done to support me both financially and spiritually!
Grace and Peace—Sarah-Kate Lowe
Members and Family of SSUMC,
Thanks for the prayers for my surgery. They helped
me to heal faster.
Thanks and prayers—Arthur Carman
Thank you so very much for the contribution to the
Giving Garden in honor of our bluegrass group.
This will go a long way to help pay to cover crop
seeds this fall. Thanks even more for the warm hos-
pitality that you and the entire Church show to our
gang. It is always a joy and great blessing to wor-
ship with you folks. I hope we can join you all
again sometime.

October Focus: World Communion Sunday
Many of our Communion offerings this year have gone to support persons or
ministries right here within our church or even our conference. This is a
good and joyful thing! However, we know that Christ’s church is a global
one and we are called to support it beyond our own back yard.
This month you will have an opportunity to do that when you give during our
World Communion offering. All monies donated at the altar rail that day will
go to the Global Ministries scholarship program which intentionally facili-
tates the educational preparation and training of mission partners from around
the world whose subsequent work will have the most direct and positive im-
pact on the communities from which they come. Students who receive these
scholarships then pledge five years of service to the church and/or their com-
munities after graduation.
We invite you to give generously to support students who will spread the
gospel all around the world. See more at: http://www.umcmission.org/
explore-our-work/ and read the stories of those who have benefitted from
these scholarships.
The Faithfulness and
Generosity Report
September’s Communion Offer-
ing went to suppor t our college
students’ involvement in a retreat at
Loucon and the balance will be
used for the college mission trip to
Belize in December. Your gener-
osity has provided $2197 for our
college ministry this Fall.
Over a dozen mentors from State
Street met with their new kids at
Dishman-McGinnis last month as
they begin a year of building rela-
tionships with just one hour a week
to go have lunch with a student.
It’s not too late to get started; men-
tors are always needed! See Pastor
Cindy if you’d like to get involved.
Thank you!

NEWS FROM YOUR MISSION AND SERVICE TEAM
Your Mission and Service Team (MAST) is planning a two-week special
event for two Wednesday nights in October . It is our hope to leave you
better informed about missions in our church and around the community and
to give you an opportunity to roll up your sleeves and be a part of them.
On October 14th we will have guests from Habitat for Humanity, Salvation
Army and the Homeless and Housing Coalition who will each give a brief
presentation about their latest work and ways to become involved. You will
have an opportunity to sign up to spend the next Wednesday night going out
from the church to help in hands-on ways in the community.
On October 21st, those who have not chosen to go out into the community to
serve that evening will be treated to an amazing array of the numerous in-
house mission opportunities SSUMC participates in. You will have an oppor-
tunity to sign up to participate in those, plus, we will have several hands-on
options for you to choose to work on after dinner that night—no special skills
required.
We look forward to seeing you there!
State Street UMC will be hosting The Foundry Christian Community Center’s
Trunk or Treat event from 4 –6 pm on October 31st. You can help by
Providing refreshments or money to buy refreshments
Providing baked goods for a cake walk
Serving as a greeter or parking lot attendant,
Or decorating a table and passing out candy.
You can also contribute by donating candy to our Harvest Fest. Any leftover
candy will be taken to the Foundry for this Trunk or Treat event.
Mike and Marianne Blodgett are the coordinators for this event. They will be
available after church on October 11, 18 and 25 to answer questions and sign
up volunteers. Hope to see you there!
Join the Music Ministry and share more than just a song. Share in fellowship, friendship, worship and prayer!
Bowling Green Retirement Village Worship Services The fourth Sunday of each month at 2:30 in the afternoon, SSUMC
provides a worship service for the residents of BGRV. Various members of our congregation share the message, provide special music and lead the worship
service. We are always looking for more people to be involved (especially young families). The residents love to see and hear young children sharing their gift of
music. Contact Lee if you would like to help with part of a service.
