THE COMMUHJTY CHURCH HEWS Vol. IV Friday, April 9, 1937 STOW, OHIO No. IS

PROGRESS Amazing progress is toeing made

hy the Community Church in Stow. Developments, exceeding the dreams and hopes cif the most faithful, are actually unfolding every week.

It is altogether probable that in the very next issue of this paper an-nouncement will be fortihcoirning of a program for the Community Church that will exceed anything ever attempted by church activity in Stew, at any time whatsoever.

The minister and official board have at this time a program pend-ing that will enhance the commun-ity spirit in christian activity many fold. Wat'ch this page for an-nouncement next week.

We have never been extravagant in display advertisement. If we knew ourselves at all conservation has swung the balance, our effort has teen to deliver the goods, to let thei work speak for itself. New the hour has struck, the day is at hand. In the spirit of Caleb' we say, Let us go up at on,ce and possess the land for we are well able to over-come it. Under God this is always true. No group o'f men can ac-complish a great and lasting work in the realm of the Spirit unless God be with them.

The Community Church n o t only has won the right to live, it now gives evidence of being a mighty power for good, sending its rays cf light, cf truth, of hope afar in every direction.

This church probably embodies eighteen or twenty different faiths or creeds. Approximately twenty different denominations find a com-mon ground on which to labor for the loving Lord.

Never in my three and a half, years as minister have I heard one word of contention relative to church doctrine. One is our Mas-ter, even Christ and all we are brethren.

This is glorious evidence to the world that a new day, a day long sought and prayed for, is at hand. The Community Church in Stow will contend for a vital spiritual contact with Almighty God, it will advance in faith believing there is a mighty reality in pure, unadulter-ated Christianity.

If this church, or any church, survives the renaissance through which Christianity is passing it must have the magnimimity to free itself from many pet tenets and hold fast to the simple gospel truths taught by the Master.

A Current Lesson Analysis For April 18

This lesson is intended primarily to be a temperance 1 lesson. It ap-proaches the subject from the re-sult .angle. The text is found in several different books of the Old Testament. The principle topic is the destruction of Sodiom and Gom-rnorrah and the principle charac-ters are Abraham, Sarah his wife, Lot his nephew and the members of the family of Lot. The purpose of the lesson is to teach the curse oif sin. In other words it teaches chat those who forget God and revel in the lust of wordly pleasure must fac? the wrath of God.

God made a covenant with Abraham when he was seventy-five years old that he would give him a land for his descendants and God directed him to take his house-hold and start out. Abraham, whose, name was then Abram, took Sarai his wife and Lot his nephew and did as the Lord comimandied him. He was lead by God to Ca-naan. Here he and Lot established themselves and developed herds, for .they were shepherds. It was not long until dissentdon developed be-tween the herdsmen of Lot and those of Abraham over the division

of the sheep. Abraham, who was always capable of exercising excel-lent judgment, proposed a division which was accepted fay Lot with the understanding that Lot would take his portion of tlhe herd to other pastures and keep t'hem sep-arate. Lot chose the fertile plains of the lower Jordan near the Dead Sea and took his family to live in Sodom which was a city of idolatry and knew not God. Condition i be-came so terrible there shortly af-ter Lot moved in that God revealed to Abraham his plan to destroy Iboth it and- two others of lesser size named Gomorrah and Zop,r. Abraham pleaded with the Lord to apare these cities for the sake of the righteous who dwelt there.

Aibraahm suggested that there were possibly (fifty people there who were christians and' the Lord told him that if there were ten there who were -christians He would not destroy it. The Lord sent anixels to Lot 'who warned him of •the plan and they told him to flee the city for his life and to take his household with him. Most of Lot's family refused to leave and Lot finally started with his Wife and .daughters with instructions not to look back but to make haste. His wife disobeyed and was turned into a, pillar of salt. T|wo oif these cities were destroyed by fire and ibcimstone rained ifrom heaven.

•Please realize that this is no fairy-tale. It is referred to many, many times in the E'ible and Jesus re-ferred' to it twice while ,he wias on earth in the flesh, once in Matt.

) 10:15; and again in 11:23, 24. It is referred to by Isa., Jer., Ezek, Amos, Zeph., Paul in Rom., Peter in 2 Pet., try Ju-je, and by John in Rev. (Ref-erences furnished on request.) As a mean«: of further strengthening your faith we have the fact thut -the Pontifical Bi'Jlical Institute of Jerusalem has excavated the cities and has found deposits off brim-stone and su-'mhur. The account of the battle of Kings in Gen. 14:10 which was f ought in the Vale _ of Siddlm also refers to slimepits. The Hebrew, word for 'slirrifipits' means "bitumen.' The period pot-tery found conforms to the Biblical account date. Jesus said if they;! had' lived :•;: ht and trusted in the Lord the city oif Sodom might be
