August Resident of the Month:
Marlene Janousek
Marlene grew up in St.Paul and then moved to Maplewood. She
attended high school at Mechanic Arts High School in St.Paul.
While in high school she was part of the yearbook committee, on
the school newspaper team, and she was a cheerleader.
In 1962 she married Jerry and had two daughters. As a family
they always loved to cross country ski, go traveling with the
camper, and get together with family for all the big or small
holidays.
She has fond memories of going up to International Falls as a
family when the girls were young to visit their uncle at his lake
house. They loved to go boating, fishing, and taking walks in the
woods.
After her daughters were off to college, Marlene then started
working as a teacher’s assistant at Murray Jr. High. While Jerry
was still alive, they loved to watch old mystery movies together,
go bowling, and Jerry loved when she baked Kolache (a Polish
sweet bread with filling).
Marlene now loves to spend time reading mysteries like Agatha
Christie or Sherlock Holmes. She also loves socializing with
friends while drinking coffee. If you happen to stop by her
apartment on 2nd floor, you’ll also notice that she loves
Christmas all year round and really enjoys the Hallmark
Christmas movies too!

UPDATES FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
It is wonderful to have the opportunity to have limited visiting under the essential visitor
guidelines. It has been a long time since COVID hit in March. Each resident recently chose a
primary and a secondary visitor. As a reminder visits need to be scheduled 24 hours in
advance with the front desk team. The hours to visit, once an appointment is made, are
from 10 am -6 pm during the week and 10 am – 3pm on the weekends. Please sign in at the
front desk on the department of health sign in sheet with your mask and face shield or
goggles on after you have filled out the screening tool and have been given a temperature
test.
I would like to remind those visitors that it takes everyone doing their part to keep COVID
out of the community. This includes wearing your mask and face shield or goggles for the
entire time of the visit in your loved one’s apartment, and while walking in the hallway to
your loved one’s apartment. We need everyone’s compliance with masking and wearing a
face shield or goggles at all times.
Outside visiting:
Please remember to keep 6 feet apart while visiting. No eating or drinking while you are
visiting please. Keep your masks on at all times that cover your mouth and nose. Please
keep to having only 2 visitors at a time.
We have a long way to go with COVID and with your help we can have visiting happen. If
we have a COVID positive resident or multiple resident’s then more restrictions is what the
playbook calls for and no one wants to take a step backwards with more restrictions.

A NOTE FROM ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES
The Water tower they are finally done sandblasting and have started to paint. Right now, what you see is the base color. It was in the White Bear Press if you want to see what it is supposed to look like. If not continue to watch to see what colors it will be!
Recycling and Trash- Just remember “When in doubt throw it out!” Please remember to put all your trash in bags and tie it before you throw it down the shoot. With the recycling if you have any big items please bring them down to the garage. If you can not break down the box, please leave it next to the recycling bin and I will break it down for you.
We have cancelled the garage cleaning for this year as well as the window washing. John and I will be cleaning the garage at some point and will let you know because we will be blowing dust around and you might not want to park in the garage during that time.

FUN AND GAMES Hello Everyone! I can’t believe that we are already in August! As you know we have started having small group activities of 9 or less residents. These include everything from bingo, church services, trivia, TED talks, Current Events, Movies, Resident Council, and To-Go Treats with Terrence. To sign up for these activities you need to call the Activities department at #651-762-6113. We will continue to pass out weekend packets that will be have the weekly activities for channel 1-2, community room activities, and puzzles/crosswords. We will also continue to have the trivia question at 10:30am on channel 1-1. Please call to the front desk with your answer. If you have any suggestions on the types of small group activities that we can have safely (6ft apart, be able to sanitize equipment, etc.), please let Kerri or Amanda know! We can not wait to have a big party as soon as possible!! Kerri Antonen, Activities Director
Meet our Community Dog- BEAR Bear is our community dog that will be here in December of 2020! Bear loves
bones and tug toys but is also still easily distracted by other
exciting activity. He loves being pet and will follow you all
day long if it means he gets some love. He is very loving and
fun to work with because he is so attentive. They are
working closely with him on walking without getting
underfoot. He is quick to learn new commands and loves
to please. We can’t wait to welcome Bear to our
community!
NOTES ON A SPIRITUAL CARE PLAN: from Chaplain Craig’s Desk
In early July, Christian worship services began again in our community after a month’s long hiatus. I feel overjoyed at the eagerness with which some of you have hurried to sign up before the eighteen available seats fill every week. What a gift it is to be able to gather in spirit, mind, and body. Togetherness is a gift that perhaps before this age of COVID-19 we took too much for granted.
Now that we can enjoy being together again, it may be tempting to too soon rush on to “getting back to normal”. Yet we would be wise, I think, to consider more thoroughly and thoughtfully just how radically the world has changed. At the risk of sounding unpastoral, allow me to put it bluntly: There is no getting back to normal. “Normal” as we once knew it is no more. Our current situation gives new meaning to Paul’s words from 2 Corinthians 5:17: “Everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new!”
Growing into this new world is and will be difficult. I think we need ample time to lament and grieve “the way things were”. Many of us have already grown weary of all the changes and the uncertainties that COVID-19 seems to have introduced into the world. As pastor to this community, I urge all of you to take care of yourselves in this time, whatever that may mean for you. Be kind. Take courage. Give yourself permission to feel whatever you’re feeling, whether sadness, loneliness, or fear. Yes, former things are passing away and we are also still in this together and God is still with us too.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS: National Wellness Month (August)
During the month of August, it is National Wellness Month! We want to focus on self-care, managing stress, and promoting healthy routines. We want to create some wholesome habits in your lifestyle all month long and see how much better you can feel. Research has shown that self-care can help manage stress and promote happiness. Whether you would like to challenge yourself to try a different spa treatment, or a new yoga pose, make a small change and impact your health in a positive way! There are numerous ways to make those small changes, too. Listed below are some of these ways:
• - Increase your water intake.
• - Add more fruits and veggies to your meals.
• - Monitor your sleep and make adjustments for better sleep habits
• - Join a yoga, walking, or aerobics class.
• - Learn to meditate.
• These small steps can lead to many more healthy habits in your lifestyle.
