I will give thanks to you O
Lord with my whole heart;
I will tell of all your
marvelous works.
Psalm 9:1
Dear St. Paul’s Family and Friends,
We are indeed giving thanks to our Lord with our whole hearts. We are grateful.
Grateful for all of you - for your warm welcome and generous spirits. Grateful
for all that is happening in this place. Grateful for all the ministry you all are
doing to live out the meaning of St. Paul’s mission statement:
To Know Christ
To Worship Christ
To Serve Christ
To Make Him Known.
We have a busy and exciting Fall ahead of us. We will get to Know Christ
better through new and existing Christian formation classes for all ages, and
new and exciting fellowship activities. We will Worship Christ through Sunday
worship and Celtic Evensongs - both with amazing musical offerings. We will
Serve Christ in new and current mission and outreach programs. And through
all of this and, so much more, we will Make Him Known.
Please see our new website www.stpaulslynchburg.org. A lot of work has been
put into it and the site will show you all of the ways St. Paul’s is indeed
Knowing Christ, Worshipping Christ, Serving Christ and Making Him Known.
We give thanks to you O Lord with our whole hearts. Now let us all go forth and
tell of all of God’s marvelous works.
Gratefully yours in Christ,
Diane+ and Todd+

know of your interest or of any questions you may have. ([email protected]; church phone 845-

The St. Paul’s Choir: Weekly Rehearsals resumed Thursday, Sept. 3rd, 7:30-9:00 p.m. in the Choir
Room. The Choir leads the music at the 10:30 a.m. service (summer 10:00 a.m.) year round and enjoys
a warm fellowship with lots of laughter! Special attention is devoted to the music for All Saints Sunday,
the Service of Advent Lessons and Carols, Christmas Eve, Holy Week, Easter, and the Day of Pentecost.
The St. Paul’s Hand Bell Choir: Weekly Rehearsals resume Monday, Sept. 14th, 4:00-5:00 p.m. in the
Choir Room. The bell choir consists of eleven or twelve adults or youth who ring our beautiful three-octave (plus four bells) set
of Schulmerich Hand Bells. Music is prepared for certain service preludes and hymn and anthem accompaniments, and the bell
choir has presented community outreach programs. The members enjoy a rich and fun fellowship!
The St. Paul’s Choristers: Fall Term Rehearsals begin Tuesday, September 29th, and continue through Dec. 1st, 4:15-5:15 p.m. The Choristers (five years old through 5th grade) and the Choral Scholars (6th grade and up) gather on Tuesday afternoons for
snacks followed by rehearsal of hymns and anthems, music games, and the learning of some basic note-reading skills. For part of
the rehearsal, the participants are divided into younger and older groups for age-appropriate instruction. Please call me or see me at
church if you have any questions. Mrs. Joyce Bailey, Mrs. Anne McKenna, and I are excited to see our returning choristers and to
welcome new members!

ATTENTION YOUTH—5th Grade and Older!
ACOLYTE TRAINING—September 20th
We would like to extend to the youth of St. Paul’s an
invitation to join the ministry of acolytes. As an acolyte, you
are taking on a role of leadership in the worship service. This
ministry is a very old tradition in the Episcopal Church.
Acolytes have served as ministry helpers at God’s altars for
over 17 centuries. Today, acolytes serve at the altar to help
bishops, priests, and deacons. They generally assist in
processions by carrying processional crosses, torches, flags
books and other items. They also assist with Communion by
presenting the bread, water, and wine to the priest or deacon
preparing the table. Acolytes are an integral part of the
worship team that leads the congregation in a worship service
that brings glory to God. We are interesting in expanding our
membership of acolytes who serve at the altar during the
10:30 service. If you are in the 5th grade or older, we would
love to have you join this ministry. We are holding a 30
minute training for torchbearer, server, second cross, and
gospel bearer positions on Sunday, September 20th,
immediately after the 10:30 service. Afterward you can
expect to be scheduled 1 to 2 times a month at the positions
in which you have been trained. Please come join us.

A PLACE FOR YOU TO SERVE...
Welcoming newcomers is a call that employs our most
fundamental charge as members of the church. At St.
Paul's, those who work with newcomers embrace five vital
opportunities: 1) welcoming newcomers after the 8:00 or
10:30 services on Sundays; 2) following up with them through
a note of welcome the week after the visit; to St. Paul's; 3)
shepherding them into the life of the church through a
"listening" coffee or lunch apart from church; 4) connecting
them with opportunities of service by contacting those
individuals who might further welcome them into the life of
the church; and 5) following up with them as they become
regular members of the parish. Is this a call that interests
you? Could you help with all or parts? Please contact Betty
Blevins at 434-444-3648 or email [email protected].
ST. PAUL’S NEW OUTREACH
This year, St. Paul's adopted the boys of
Greene Cottage at the Boys Home of
VA. The boys were thrilled with the
school supplies and personal care items
we delivered to them at the start of the
school year. You can support the boys
during the year by remembering their
birthday. Please pick up a list of the boys and their birthdays in
the narthex. They would be happy to hear from you! And mark
your calendar! The boys of the Boys Home of Virginia are
coming to visit St. Paul’s on Sunday, October 4th. The boys
will join us for the 10:30 service, followed by a special welcome
and refreshments afterwards in the undercroft. Please come
meet the boys and learn more about this important outreach
ministry of St. Paul's and the Episcopal Church. Contact Anne-
Riely Popper at anne_riley @verizon.net. Looking for a Bible Study this Fall?
Join this group study on Monday evenings as we discuss the
Names of God, led by Barbara Boothe. We meet at the home
of Clyde and Carolyn Shepherd at 2299 Glencove Placr,
Lynchburg. The group meets from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Enjoy the study and the fellowship.

St. Paul's Angel Tree
One of St. Paul’s most anticipated traditions is the presentation
of the Renaissance Angels on the Christmas Tree. The tree and
crèche may be seen and enjoyed in the nave from early Advent
through early Epiphany. Names of those who have been
remembered or honored with a donation are recorded in the
Memory Book, as well as in the worship bulletins. This tree,
with the love and memories it represents, is meaningful not
only for our parish but also for the community. This year gifts,
made in honor or in memory of a loved one, will be directed to
the Angel Tree Fund. These funds will assist in the purchase of
angels and also the care and repair of our angels and crèche
figures, as well as the necessary supplies for assembling the
tree. If you would like to honor or remember a loved one with
a $45.00 donation, please contact the Parish Office at 845-7301
by Saturday, October 31st.

TREASURER’S UPDATE—Anne Hoskins
Summer saw the usual dip in pledged receipts as our members
enjoyed vacations out of town and missed attending services on
a regular basis. Those who use on line banking to pay their
pledge evened some of this "swing" in receipts, as their pledges
were received as scheduled. In September, at the end of the third
quarter, statements will be mailed to all who are on record as
giving to St. Paul's. For those who pledge, you will be able to
see where you are in your pledge for the 2015 year. We are
fortunate as a parish in being in a strong financial position
thanks to the generosity of our members. If you, at any time,
have questions concerning the finances of St. Paul's, please do
not hesitate to contact me at [email protected].
