Letter to St. Denis Parish
Fr. Reidy
Again this weekend, our readings are replete with references to light. "(Y)our
light shall break forth like the dawn" (Isaiah 58:8). "Light shines through
the darkness for the upright" (Psalm112:4). "You are the light of the world" (Mt 5:14).
Your light must shine before others" (Mt
5:16).
How is it that our light shall break
forth, pierce the darkness and shine before others? The psalmist tells us that it hap-
pens when we are gracious, merciful and just. Isaiah is more concrete. Our light will
break forth like the dawn when we feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, clothe the
naked and do not turn our back on our
own.
In his first encyclical, The Joy of the
Gospel, Pope Francis warned against a
"spiritual worldliness" which seeks human
glory, personal well-being and prosperity
detached from community life and respon-sibility for our brothers and sisters
(Evangelium Gaudium, 90, 93).
Jesus urges us in today's Gospel to let
our light shine before others that the world may see our good deeds (Mt 5:16). We do
this not that we might gain praise, garner compliments and be well thought of but
that those who see our good deeds may
glorify our Heavenly Father.
Thanks to you all for your support of
and sacrifice for the numerous charitable efforts of Saint Denis parish. They reflect
God’s light in our world and a solidarity with those in need. May we continue with
those efforts that others seeing those ef-forts may not only be fed, sheltered and
clothed today but by glorifying God, find
salvation forever.
Pope Francis Prayer Intentions for February:
During the month of February, Pope Francis
has asked us to pray that the cries of our
migrant brothers and sisters, victims of
criminal trafficking may be heard and con-
sidered.

The intent of our St. Vin-cent de Paul group is to exemplify the loving actions demonstrat-ed by the life of Jesus. As we pray each day for Father Memo, you might con-
sider the following prayer for him and for all priests.
O Almighty Eternal God, look upon the face of Christ, and
for the love of Him who is the Eternal High Priest, have pity
on your priests. Remember, O most compassionate God,
that they are but weak and frail human beings. Stir up in them
the grace of their vocation which is in them by the imposition
of the bishop’s hands. Keep them close to You, lest the Ene-
my prevail against them, so that they may never do anything
in the slightest degree unworthy of their sublime vocation.
O Jesus, I pray You for Your faithful and fervent priests; for
Your unfaithful and tepid priests; for Your priests laboring at
home or abroad in distant mission fields; for Your tempted
priests; for Your lonely and desolate priests; for Your young
priests; for Your aged priests; for Your sick priests, for Your
dying priests; for the souls of Your priests in Purgatory.
But above all I commend to You the priests dearest to me;
the priest who baptized me; the priests who absolved me
from my sins; the priests at whose Masses I assisted, and who
gave me Your Body and Blood in Holy Communion; the
priests who taught and instructed me, or helped and encour-
aged me; all the priests to whom I am indebted in any other
way, particularly N.
O Jesus, keep them all close to Your Heart, and bless them
abundantly in time and in eternity. Amen.
