The Network of Memory Spaces of Catalonia, which has been promoted by theGeneralitat’s Democratic Memorial, consists of a heterogeneous group ofheritage spaces (including itineraries, centres for interpretation, landmarks andremains) that have borne witness to the recent history of Catalonia. Its aim isto recover a -tangible and intangible- memorial heritage that represents thestruggle and conflicts undertaken to obtain basic rights and democratic freedomfor this country in the period between the Spain’s Second Republic and theDemocratic Transition (1931-1980).

By the summer of 2010, twenty-two spaces had been established in eight ofthe comarques (local districts) of Lleida within the framework of this DemocraticMemorial. These spaces highlight different thematic areas related with thisperiod and its events: the Second Republic; the Spanish Civil War; frontier andexile; the anti-Francoist struggle; and the return to democracy. This networkrelating to the history and memory of these spaces has turned them into veritableplaces of remembrance, reflection and homage. Moreover, it has transformedthem into living tools for disseminating history and social pedagogy and, at thesame time, they have become poles of attraction for memory tourism.

The fight for freedom has left Catalonia witha large number of historical footprints thatconstitute a valuable memorial heritage. TheDemocratic Memorial is an institution thatwas created in 2007 with the mission ofdeveloping the public policy of the Generalitatde Catalunya (Catalan administration) relatingto civic action aimed at recovering, comme-morating and promoting Catalonia’s demo-cratic memory. Its functions include fosteringthe recovery and promotion of this heritagethrough a Network of Memory Spaces whichgroups together different spaces —includingitineraries, interpretation centres, landmarksand remains— that have borne witness toLleida’s recent history and which are repre-sentative of the struggle and conflicts under-taken to attain basic rights and democraticfreedom for this country during the periodbetween the Second Republic and the De-mocratic Transition (1931-1980).

In the comarques (local districts) of Lleida, outstanding work has been undertaken inall of the thematic areas covered by thenetwork: spaces related with the SecondRepublic; spaces related with the SpanishCivil War; frontier and exile spaces; andspaces related with the anti-Francoist stru-ggle and the return to democracy. Amongstthe most significant places of referenceassociated with the Spanish Civil War, it is

Espaisde Memòria

important to mention the recovery of spacesin La Segarra and L’Urgell (around the L-2fortified line) and La Noguera (around thebridgehead of Balaguer) and of various battlespaces in El Pallars Jussà (Isona and ConcaDellà) and El Pallars Sobirà (Rialp, Llavorsíand La Vall de Cardós). Other recoveredspaces are the air-raid shelter under thechurch of Santa Maria in Agramunt and theRepublican airfield at Alfés. In the case offrontier and exile spaces, two major referencecentres have been opened: the Bunker Parkof Martinet i Montellà, which is a space thatpublicises the fortification of the frontierduring the early years of Francoism, and the“Path to Freedom” Prison-Museum of Sort, which is dedicated to the refugees who fledacross the Pyrenees from Nazi-occupiedEurope during the Second World.

The “Way to Freedom” Prison-MuseumThe former prison of Sort, which was located in the gothic-style chapel

of Sant Cosme i Sant Damià, has now been converted into a museum

that disseminates experiences related to war and imprisonment. It

focuses on experiences from the Spanish Civil War and the Second

World War and aims to promote the values of peace and coexistence.

In the period between 1936 and 1945, the Pyrenees became an area

of refuge for thousands of people fleeing from war and from the

dictatorships that had been established on both sides of the frontier.

During the Second World War, approximately three thousand people,

who were mainly members of the French resistance, Jews and allied

pilots, passed through Sort prison after being captured in the frontier

passes of El Pallars Sobirà and the Val d’Aran. There, they began a

journey through Spain that took them to prisons, reception centres

and concentration camps, until they eventually managed to leave the

country.

The bunkers on the Sant Joan deVilamur hillA few days after the fall of the Aragon front, in April 1938, the Francoist

troops of the Army Corps of Navarra occupied El Pallars Sobirà and

immediately set to work fortifying much of the comarca.

The troops stationed in these fortifications were given various defensive

and military duties, which included supervising ammunition, managing

supplies and obtaining food and firewood, etc.

A signposted route has been created that runs through the area around

the village of Vilamur and visits various constructions that provide an

insight into what military life was like in these fortifications.

Spanish Civil War Paths in RialpFor eight months of the Civil War (from April 1938 to January 1939)

the position of the front line remained virtually unchanged along

the River Noguera Pallaresa. This favoured the fortification of the

majority of these positions and meant that some of the neighbouring

areas became battle grounds.

Around Roní (in the municipal district of Rialp) three itineraries have

been signposted that represent the moment at which the front

was static in this area. There are various examples of war-time

archaeology (including trenches, refuges, dry-stone parapets and

shelters) and the paths that led to the “la Cassoleta” and “Piedras

de Auló” positions, which suffered constant attacks and

counterattacks by Republican and Francoist armies, have now

been recovered.

The war front in the area around BiuseOnce the war front reached El Pallars, in April 1938, it stabilised

for nine months along the River Noguera Pallaresa. The Biuse

area, in the municipal district of Llavorsí, occupied a strategic front

line position and contains various reminders of the military conflict.

A circular itinerary, which can be completed on foot in less than

an hour, has been designed to allow visitors to discover the local

war remains. Eight points have been signposted that facilitate visits

to various military structures: trenches, sniper points, covered

paths, casemates, defence systems, trench shelters, arsenals and

the front line hospital.

The frontier and bunkers at La Guinguetad’ÀneuAt La Guingueta d’Àneu, it is possible to visit four bunkers that formed

part of the fortified line that Franco had built at the end of the Spanish

Civil War to make the frontier impermeable. These constructions form

part of a memorial heritage itinerary that is completed with a trip to

various sites that held several hundred people who clandestinely

crossed the Pyrenees while fleeing from the Nazi occupation during

the Second World War. These refugees reached the Valls d’Àneu

thanks to the help of the people of Pallars who collaborated with the

evasion networks created by the allied secret services.

Information point about the Civil War andthe post-war period in the Vall de CardósThe Cardós valley was involved in several of the conflicts that took

place in the Pyrenees during the 20th century. The information point

about the Spanish Civil War and the post-war period located in

Ribera de Cardós publicises these events and the heritage elements

that they have conserved.

In the case of the Spanish Civil War, the exhibition focuses on the

arrival of the Francoist army in the valley, the establishment of the

war front and the indiscriminate repression undertaken by the rebel

army, which prompted many local inhabitants to go into exile. It is

also important to stress the role that the valley played as a zone of

passage for those fleeing from Nazi-occupied Europe during the

Second World War. Finally, attention is given to the bunkers that the

Franco regime had constructed in the Pyrenees to fortify the frontier

after the Spanish Civil War and of which there are several excellent

examples in the Vall de Cardós.

Tírvia: the destruction and reconstructionof a village adopted by the “Caudillo”Coinciding with the arrival of the Francoist troops in El Pallars

Sobirà, in April 1938, the war front was established near the River

Noguera Pallaresa, where it remained until January 1939. The

conflicts and bombings particularly affected the municipality of

Tírvia, affecting 90% of the local buildings. At the end of the war,

the village was adopted by the “Caudillo” (General Franco) and

the Spanish state took charge of its reconstruction through the

Dirección General de Regiones Devastadas (General Directorate

for Devastated Regions).

An itinerary through the centre of Tírvia highlights the social and

economic consequences of the destruction of the village and

presents urbanistic and architectonic testimonies of the

reconstruction of the municipality before the war and the changes

that it has suffered since then. The route visits six points of interest

that allow visitors to discover the past of this Pyrenean village and

its inhabitants.

The road to exile through the Salau passThe mountain passes that connect El Pallars Sobirà and the French

department of Ariège were used as escape routes, in one direction

or another, by those fleeing from the horrors of war and persecution

during periods of war and conflict on one or other side of the

Pyrenees.

During the Spanish Civil War, and coinciding with the arrival of the

Francoist troops in the comarca, in April 1938, a period of almost

eight months saw an exodus of civilian population and military

units who fled to Seix (Ariège) via the Salau and Orla passes.

The “Road to exile through the Salau pass” is a signposted itinerary

that includes various explicative elements. After leaving the village

of Alós d’Isil, the route goes on to the Salau pass, following the

route that hundreds of people used when fleeing from the horrors

of the Spanish Civil War and the repression of the victors.

Itinerary: “The Republican Front of LaPosa”In April 1938, Francoist troops reached Lleida province and the war

front was established from the Pyrenees to the River Ebro, following

the course of the main rivers (Noguera Pallaresa, Segre and Ebro).

For the next nine months, until January 1939, the struggles that took

place were marked by the advance of the Francoist forces and

Republican resistance. These events left the territory with a large

number of war remains.

A memorial heritage itinerary has been signposted in the municipal

district of Isona i Conca Dellà. The route is divided into four areas,

which all centre on the church of the Mare de Déu de la Posa. Within

just a few kilometres, on foot or by car, it is possible to enjoy excellent

panoramic views over the surrounding territory and its battle scenes,

bunkers, fortifications and trenches.

Casa Bonifaci: the Museum of LlimianaDoctor Josep Bonifaci Mora (1895-1989) was a well-known doctor

with a distinguished political career during the Second Republic and

the Civil War. He was a member of Estat Català (Catalan State) and

over the years he occupied various positions in the PSUC and UGT,

as well as serving as general manager of the Republic Government’s

Social Help service. Until 1971, he lived a long exile in several different

European countries.

The historical home of the Bonifaci family, which is located in the

very centre of Llimiana, has been transformed into Casa Bonifaci,

the Museum of Llimiana. This three-floor building recalls the history

of the municipality and particularly of the Bonifaci family and the

museum space houses part of the historical and documentary legacy

of Dr. Bonifaci.

12

Isona: the reconstruction of a villagecaught between two frontsWhen the war-front was established along the River Noguera

Pallaresa, in April 1938, Isona spent nine months on the front line.

The village was subsequently abandoned and the effects of artillery

fire were devastating; 75% of its buildings were reduced to ruins

and had to be demolished.

The Dirección General de Regiones Devastadas (General Directorate

for Devastated Regions), a body set up by the Francoist regime to

help to organise the reconstruction of settlements affected by the

war, began its work in Isona from 1940 onwards.

Some of the buildings constructed by Regiones Devastadas remain

to this day. The itinerary through the centre of the village of Isona

provides visitors with an insight into those past events and highlights

relevant public buildings (the local council building, schools, parish

church, and rectory), basic services (the bakery, water deposit and

electricity generator) and social housing for farmers.

on the Aragon front was established. After the Francoist

occupation of April 1938, the airfield was not used again until

January 1939, when it became the headquarters of the Italian

air squadron.

Various different heritage remains have been conserved at the

aerodrome: the arsenal, living quarters, trenches, and hangar...

A signposted itinerary through this historic space allows visitors

The air-raid shelter at the church of SantaMaria de AgramuntHidden under the Romanesque-style temple of Santa Maria de Agramunt

(12th and 13th centuries) there is an air-raid shelter which constitutes

a unique element in the memorial heritage of Catalonia. The shelter

runs the full length of the central nave and the transept of the temple;

the long gallery is 34 metres long and the transversal gallery has a

length of 28.4 metres.

In April 1938, Agramunt suffered its first bombing by Fascist aviation.

After this attack, work began on the construction of several air-raid

shelters, but the one built under the church was the biggest.

Today, the air-raid shelter houses a permanent exhibition which explains

how the people of Agramunt lived during this war period. It is divided

into 7 spaces that show day-to-day life before the war, the consequences

of the conflict, the reconstruction of the municipality and how the

shelter was later recovered and restored.

passed through the comarques of L’Alt Urgell, La Noguera, La Segarra,

L’Urgell, La Conca de Barberà, El Baix Camp and El Tarragonès.

In Vallbona de les Monges, an itinerary has established that shows

Under the bombs: itineraries related to thebombing of Les Borges BlanquesAfter the breaking of the Aragon front, on 3rd April 1938, the Francoist

army occupied the city of Lleida. A new war-front was then established

between the Pyrenees and the River Ebro. Les Borges Blanques soon

became a prime objective for the rebel army; it was an important

communications point on the way to Tarragona and it was also the

birthplace of Francesc Macià, the Republican President.

Fascist planes launched a total of eleven air raids on Les Garrigues

between April 1938 and January 1939. The majority of the population

took refuge from these intense attacks in vaulted shelters as 500,000

kg of bombs fell on the comarca.

A signposted itinerary, which starts from the monument to Francesc Macià

and includes 13 commemorative monoliths, provides a graphic insight into

the consequences of the bombs that fell on various parts of the town.

The Path to FreedomVarious mountain passes connect the municipal district of Alt Àneu

with France along a 17 km long frontier and during the Second

World War thousands of people used them to flee from Nazi-

occupied Europe. The “Path to Freedom” itinerary, which runs

through the Alt Pirineu Natural Park, follows one of these escape

routes which runs through the Pala de Clavera pass.

The route begins at Seix (in the French department of Ariège) and

ends at Alós d’Isil. It is the scene of an annual memorial crossing

that commemorates the epic journey undertaken by those who

fled from the Nazis, seeking freedom via Spain. The path is perfectly

signposted and includes various panels that explain the significance

of this area and the role that it played as a place of refuge for

hundreds of people.

The Bunker Park of Martinet iMontellàThe Defence Line of the Pyrenees was constructed in the 1940s,

within the context of the Second World War, and followed the

Pyrenees from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic.

Although the initial project foresaw 10,000 bunkers, between

4,500 and 5,000 were finally constructed and remain perfectly

visible to this day. Given the important strategic position of La

Cerdanya, this territory contains a large number of these

constructions.

The Bunker Park of Martinet i Montellà contains key elements

for understanding their historical context, the reasons for their

construction, and the events experienced in these spaces. The

visitors’ centre is complemented by an external itinerary that

includes eight different types of bunker and a network of

interlinked subterranean galleries.

The Bunkers of ForadadaIn 1938, the Republican army began to construct a line of

fortifications, denominated L-2, with the aim of halting the

advance of Francoist troops towards inland Catalonia. This

line of defences ran from La Seu d’Urgell in the north to

Tarragona in the south.

The municipal district of Foradada (La Noguera), which stands

on the left bank of the River Segre, still conserves various

elements of this war-time heritage. A signposted itinerary on

the outskirts of the village leads visitors to various remains

(bunkers and trenches) that formed part of the second line of

defence of the River Segre.

Tel. information: 34 973 42 00 09

The Merengue“God’s Mount”, which is also popularly known as the

“Merengue” (Meringue), is located in the municipal district of

Camarasa and was the scene of intense fighting between

Francoist and Republican forces from May 1938 onwards. In

April of the same year, the Francoist army established a

bridgehead (an advanced position on the front line) in this area

of La Noguera. This proved an insuperable obstacle for the

Republican forces, which continually attacked it without

success.

Many of the protagonist and victims of these combats were

the young men of the Quinta del Biberón (Baby-Bottle Brigade).

Remains associated with this battle (including trenches and

machinegun nests) have been analysed and conditioned and

form part of Catalonia’s memorial heritage. On top of the hill,

it is possible to visit a monolith that pays tribute to the

combatants who lost their lives here, while in the cemetery of

Camarasa, a mass grave containing the remains of some of

those who died in this conflict has been signposted and

dignified.

the Aragón front, the Francoist forces reached the province

of Lleida and the war-front became established along a line

that followed the rivers Noguera Pallaresa, Segre and Ebro;

it then remained there until December 1938. The Francoist

army established a bridgehead at Balaguer and in part of the

comarca of La Noguera, with the aim of protecting this area

from Republican attacks. Over a period of eight months, a

series of defensive fortifications were constructed, many of

which have stood the test of time.

Some of the remains located in the municipal districts of La

Sentiu de Sió (the hills of Les Forques and hermitage of

Guardiola), Bellcaire d’Urgell (Lo Morinyol and El Pedrís),

Montgai (the trenches on the hills) and Preixens (fortifications

The bunkers of the Defence Line of thePyrenees in the Vall de CardósIn 1939, before the Spanish Civil War was over, Franco gave orders

to fortify the Pyrenees and planned the construction of over 10,000

bunkers. There were several justifications for these costly constructions:

in 1939, they had to prevent the return of Republicans;, while during

the Second World War, they were to prevent a possible German or

allied attack, or even to combat the activity of the Maquis.

In the area around Ribera de Cardós, it is possible to visit several of

the constructions that formed part of this fortified line. A signposted

route starts from the Information Point about the Civil War and the

post-war period in the Vall de Cardós and takes visitors to the bunkers

nearest to the village, where it is possible to enjoy an area of great

scenic value.
