Kerry U-21 HurlersPride of place at intercounty level this yearhas to go the our All-Ireland U21 B hurlingwinners who secured victory over Wicklowin a highly entertaining and close contestat Semple Stadium Thurles on 9thSeptember last.
It represented a first All Ireland title since2013 and the eighth overall with a welldeserved four-point win.
Ian Brick and his management teamdeserve huge credit and particularmention. Collectively they put in a hugeeffort in preparing the team and reaped therewards accordingly.
It is refreshing to see the number oftalented young hurlers in Kerry and allgoing well a good number of them willprogress into the Senior set up this year. Itwas very fitting indeed that Kerry Captainand Lixnaw native Darragh Shanahan waspresented with the Ritchie McElligott Cupby Uachtatán Tofa CLG, John Horan. Thiscup is of course named after one ofLixnaw’s famous sons.
Special CongressA special Congress will take place at the endof the month primarily to deal with the newhurling proposals. A series of information
nights have been held in the four provinceswhere the proposals have been explained toCounty Officers and delegates.
Special Congress is not something thathappens very often, in fact its ten yearssince one was held. The proposals havebeen drafted following consultation bymany groups and bodies and will bedebated on the day.
The rationale behind the hurling reformsrelates to a want on the part of CLG atnational level to have them in line with thefootball changes that will come into effectnext year. There will be a three-year periodfrom 2018 where the reformed hurling andfootball championships will be monitoredand evaluated.
Currans Development –Current Status• 4 sand based pitches and drills area
fully installed & completed• Clubhouse consists of 8nr changing
rooms, gym, dedicated medical / physio& rehab area, canteen, kitchen, offices & cafe all now complete
• Gym fit out to take place in November /December 2017
• Pitch Lighting to be installed by December 2017
• The completed facility will ultimately incorporate six pitches
• Facility will be fully available to all intercounty teams in January 2018
• Further International fundraising initiatives are planned for the coming year
Maurice LeahyEarlier this month Maurice Leahy retired ashurling GDA in Kerry after almost 28 yearsservice. Such has been his contribution tothe Development of Hurling in the Countythat it cannot be measured accurately or itssignificance overstated. Maurice has alwaysdescribed the role as his dream job andsince becoming Chairman last December Ihave found Maurice to be an absolutegentleman who is totally committed to thepromotion of Hurling.
I would like to take this opportunity to wishMaurice all the very best in his retirementand I have no doubt that he will play manyfuture roles in developing the game in Kerry.

Lixnaw and St Brendan’s have a rich recent history in theGarvey’s Super Valu Kerry Senior Hurling Championship. The two clubs avoided each other in 2016 but last met inthe championship in the semi-final back in 2015. StBrendan’s won that game by 6 points. In 2014 they met onthree occasions. St Brendan’s won the first game by a pointand then met Lixnaw in the semi-final. Lixnaw won thatgame after a replay and went on to win the title that year.
That was a sweet victory for Lixnaw because St Brendan’s hadbeaten Lixnaw in the County Final in 2013 once again after areplay. In those previous 6 meetings, St Brendan’s have won3, there has been 2 draws and Lixnaw have won once.
This will be the 7th meeting of the teams in thechampionship in 5 years and their third semi-finalmeeting in 4 years. It would be fair to say that a healthyrivalry has built up between both camps over the yearsalthough the playing personnel has changed somewhatfor both.
Lixnaw in particular have had a strong influx of youth to theside. The likes of Shane Conway, Colm Sheehy, Liam Mullinsand Conor O’Keeffe have injected a youthful look to theLixnaw side. Although the experience of players like JohnGriffin, Michael Conway and Pat Corridan will also be crucial.
St Brendan’s are still relying on John Egan for inspirationalthough Cian Hussey, Thomas Moloney and Kevin Skinnerhave all added punch to their attack. If this game goesaccording to the pre-ordained script then Lixnaw should win.Mark Foley’s side were in imperious form in the summer andit is reasonable to assume that they will maintain thatprogress on Sunday. Lixnaw had an average score of 2-23 intheir opening games of the championship and St Brendan’swill have to work hard to stop that scoring threat.
The big question surrounding this game is can St Brendan’simprove. They have been knocking on the door at thisstage of the season for a couple of years but have yet torecreate the winning form that they showed in 2013.

There is no question that they have the talent andthey also should have a physical advantage against ayoung Lixnaw side. If they manage to curb the threatof the Conway brothers at one end of the field andJohn Egan and Cian Hussey get going at the other endof the pitch then an Ardfert win is more than possible.
Lixnaw have played a sleek brand of quick hurlingrelying on pace and skill. Their speed of movementand the economy in their striking has been a hall markof their play this year. This will be a fascinatingcontrast in playing styles and a good test of Lixnaw’schampionship credentials. There is normally very littlebetween these two when they meet and we expectsomething similar again on Sunday.
Lixnaw are rightly favourites to win the game but weexpect a big kick from St Brendan’s. It is crucial thatArdfert men play to a game plan and stick to it. Theymust also play to their strengths. If they manage todo both then this should be a real battle.
The Ardfert lads will no doubt be reminded that theyhave a good record against Lixnaw and they willbelieve they can win. Both teams have registered bigscores in this year’s championship but St Brendan’sdefensive frailties, they have conceded 8 goals in thisyear’s championship, could be their Achilles heel.Lixnaw’s worries are that they are a little bit rusty andalso they will hope that their inexperienced playersperform in a pressure situation.
If Lixnaw break even in the middle third then theyshould be good enough to win the game.

In fact the only thing bigger than Ballyduff andKilmoyley meeting in a county semi-final is for themto meet in a final as they did just twelve months ago. That fact and the fact the final went to a replay addsa nice additional layer to this clash of the titans.
Last year’s victory for Kilmoyley tied the two giantsof the game in the Kingdom at the top of the roll ofhonour. Neither team will want to give an inch in thebattle for supremacy. Neither team will want theother to get anywhere near going back to the top ofthe pile on their own.
If you don’t think that matters then we’d advise youthink again. Of course it matters. You don’t get tothe top of the pile unless being top of the pile meanssomething to you. Traditions of excellence have away of perpetuating themselves.
Just take a look at this Kilmoyley team. They knew theywere good enough to win two in-a-row so they did it.They know they’re good enough to at least challengefor three in-a-row so that’s what they’re doing.
It’s not coincidence that when these clubs have hadteams good enough to win one championshipthey’ve usually gone on to win multiplechampionships. They win the odd one in isolationhere and there, but more often than not they aimfor domination.
The stakes, then, are pretty high here today inAustin Stack Park. Most people have Kilmoyleydown as favourites, for the simple reason that atthis moment in time they’re proven winners.

When push has come to shove this past three seasonsFergie O’Loughlin’s men – not forgetting John Meyler’srole as manager in the first season of this period ofsuccess for the club – have found a way to win.
If that meant calling upon the talents of Shane Brick tohelp them to victory in last year’s final then so be it. Greatteams and great clubs do everything they can to winand, we’re of the opinion at least, Ballyduff could wellhave beaten them last year without Brick’s influence.
With Brick now retired, does that swing the pendulumback towards Ballyduff? Possibly, but we wouldn’t be100% convinced of that. Not least because there’s achance – and we’re writing this before a decision hasbeen formalised – Mikey Boyle won’t have hissuspension lifted in time for today’s game.
Losing Mikey would be an equally significant blow toBallyduff as the loss of Brick (and really we have to takehis availability for last year’s final as a bonus anyway). That being the case (and again we don’t know at thetime of writing) the two even each other out.
Outside of that you’d have to consider that Kilmoyleyhad the better of both games in last year’schampionship. Ballyduff relied on a couple of brilliantforwards – Pádraig Boyle was in sensational form inthe replay – to keep them in touch.
Kilmoyley were the more consistent team all over thepitch, but maybe lacking that killer instinct up front.Still as the Munster intermediate final showed lastyear a player of Daniel Collins’ calibre will carry you along way.
Some of Kilmoyley’s younger forwards are a year oldertoo – Maurice O’Connor and Jordan Brick – and thatadditional seasoning should stand them and theirclub in good stead.
Ballyduff, meanwhile, will welcome back DanielO’Carroll and Jack Goulding to the fold for the firsttime in this year’s championship. Anybody who wasat the recent All Ireland Under 21 B final will attestthat Goulding, despite having played relatively littlehurling this summer, is bang in form and likely to getbetter still.
So who’s going to win? Kilmoyley are probably still thebetter side – Causeway were probably better thanBallyduff in their quarter-final despite losing out – butif Mikey Boyle is cleared to play then he’s certainly aman capable of driving his team to victory.
