GIM Bags Top Honours at TISS – Mumbai
The Goa Institute of Management (GIM) bagged the first place at “Manthan „08”, a
National Level Business Event organised by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS),
Mumbai. The event facilitated an interface between the Academia, Industry & Students.
Students from the premier Indian business & technical schools battled it out for top honours
in a wide spectrum of events across varied functions. GIM was represented by Sunder
Balakrishnan and Reuben D‟Mello.
Sunder Balakrishnan won the 1st prize and Reuben D‟Mello was among the Top 6 Finalists,
in the “Claim to Fame” competition of Manthan 2008.
„Claim to Fame‟ was a Personality cum Talent Hunt competition wherein the participants‟
attitude, literary and performing skills were evaluated. Participants were required to display
their talent in the field of Dance, Music or Mimicry in the first round. This was followed by
a quiz on India and questions from the judges.
Reuben and Sunder played the piano and violin respectively for their individual
performances. Both of them enthralled the audience with their recitals to such an extent that
the judges even requested them to perform a duet, which they competently executed.
Overall, it was an event well-represented by GIM and one that brought forth our students‟
diverse talents.
The duo of Abhishek Jha and Pooja
Kamath from Goa Institute of
Management shone at the Tata
Crucible Campus Quiz, finishing
runners-up. The Tata Crucible
Campus Quiz made its grand entry in
Goa on the 24th February 2009 and
registered a commendable turnout of
nearly 50 teams. Goa Institute of
Management made its presence felt,
with seven teams going for the kill. Of
these, two teams crossed the initial
hurdle of the prelims round. Mr. Giri
Balasubramaniam, the famous „Pick-
Brain‟ of Greycaps and quizmaster for
the evening, tested the teams‟ mettle,
while keeping the audience entertained
with his trademark „SUPPPPERBBB‟
and wit.,

Wizbiz - The Annual Corporate Quiz of Goa Institute
of Management
There was no match for the fierce determination and passion that the participants had for Goa
Institute of Management‟s Annual Corporate Quiz – Wizbiz 2009. Dreams of grandeur, well
supported by sheer hard work, team spirit, perseverance, and at times, plain luck, saw the
light of the day on the 28th
February 2009. The „Laran‟ lawn at the International Centre, Dona
Paula saw a magnificent turnout for the event that was organized by MECCA – the student-
driven marketing club in GIM. The crowd got to witness five rounds of quality quizzing
conducted by the famous quizmaster Avinash Mudliar, a veteran of four WIZBIZs. Hot
favourites „Savoire Faire‟ emerged victorious followed by the team from Infosys
Hyderabad. Coming in third was the whackily christened „Feni Vidi Vici‟, a mixed team of
seasoned journalists.

Walk For India
The Goa Institute of Management has always strived not just to impart managerial skills to its
students but also to inculcate a sense of social responsibility in them. Keeping this in mind,
GIM took the initiative to „Walk for India‟. Through this event the students get to express
their solidarity with a relevant social cause.
In the wake of recent happenings in Goa, the theme for „Walk for India‟ this year was „Stop
Child Abuse...Save the Future‟. Child abuse is a criminal offence and as responsible citizens
we must do our bit to stop this evil. We believe that every child has the right to a healthy and
joyous childhood. Through this walk we hoped to spread awareness among the people, so that
the community can raise their voice against those who deny this right to a child. „Walk for
India‟ this year was held on the 15th
of August, 2009. Taking cognizance of our duty to the
society and initiating the process of fulfilling it, is probably one of the better ways to
celebrate our Independence Day.
The students walked from Miramar to the Secretariat in Panaji. Over 100 students along with
the faculty participated in this walk to reiterate the importance of preventing child abuse. It
was indeed overwhelming to see a number of locals also joining in too. This indicated that
the students had managed to spread the message making this event a success.

Samriddhi - 2009
Samriddhi - the Annual National Conference organized by the Goa Institute of Management,
strives to find practical and viable solutions to a wide range of critical issues that impact
society and business today.
Samriddhi „09 looked at entrepreneurship as an opportunity in these difficult times,
with a special focus on Social Entrepreneurship which aims at creating not just wealth for
a selected few, but also contributing meaningfully to society.
The aim of the conference was to trigger a spark of Social Entrepreneurship among the
country‟s youth, by highlighting sustainable & profitable social ventures.
Samriddhi‟09 targeted
Profit making, impact creating ventures that address the larger social needs.
Exploring the need, viability and relevance of social ventures in the Indian context,
given the country‟s demographic, social and financial profile.
Creating awareness about the business opportunities based on social needs for
students, working executives and the corporate community.
Samriddhi „09 was inaugurated by Mr. Digambar Kamat, the Hon’ble Chief Minister of
Goa on 29th
August, 2009. The first session „Introduction to Social Entrepreneurship and its
Strategic Challenges‟ was by Dr. Trilochan Sastry (Dean, IIM Bangalore) and Ms. Sohini
Bhattacharya (Director for partnerships, Ashoka Innovators) where they shared their
views on Social Entrepreneurship and highlighted the need to be flexible with the
implementation of strategies without compromising on core values.
The other eminent speakers who shared their experiences with the young minds on the idea of
Social Entrepreneurship were:
Speaker Designation Company
Mr L. Kannan Founder and CTO Vortex Engineering
Ms Saloni Malhotra CEO DesiCrew Solutions
Mr Pradeep Ghosh Founder OASIS
Dr Ashwin Naik Co-founder Vaatsalya Healthcare
Mr Arbind Singh Founder Nidan
Mr Vipin
Thekkekalathil
Associate Director Ashoka Youth Venture
Mr Vikas Sharma Co-founder Parichay
Mr Arun Diaz Investment Board Member Aavishkaar India Micro Venture
Capital Fund
Seldom is it that the take-away for a student from a conference is as high as it was in
Samriddhi „09. The speakers, being social entrepreneurs themselves, described the challenges
they faced, their failures and how they rose above them to succeed. The fact that so many
individuals have successfully established a profitable social venture while at the same time
contributing meaningfully to society is great encouragement for the student to be a „change
maker‟ and start along the difficult but rewarding path of social entrepreneurship.

Ribandar Talks - A Kaleidoscopic Vision
Ribandar Talks invites eminent personalities from various walks of life to speak to an
audience comprising of postgraduate management students, faculty and other scholars at
GIM. Management education is more than just theories. It is a life changing experience that
introduces a student to diverse perspectives. Management education cannot restrict itself to
the boundaries of a classroom; concepts learnt in class must be complemented, assimilated
and sometimes even challenged by real life experiences. Ribandar Talks, conceptualized in
the year 2005, aims to make learning at GIM even closer to present day realities thus
nurturing well informed and practical managers.
On the 27th
of August, Mr.Manohar Parrikar, the Ex.Chief Minister of Goa delivered a lecture
on “Impact of Ethics on Managerial Performance” where he drew upon his vast experience in
public life to impress upon the audience the relevance of ethics in business.
