A Message from Mr. Groff
THE GREEN & GOLD GAZETTE
I would like to extend my congratulations to all of the graduates and their families of the Class of 2010. The hard work, dedication, and commitment has earned the Class of 2010 at St. Bonaventure High School over three million three hundred thousand dollars in scholarship monies for use at the university level. I am extremely proud of our graduates, not only for their scholarly abilities, but their commitment to service in this community. Welcome Class of 2014 The Gazette is being mailed out to the 150 new members of the St. Bonaventure family. We welcome you warmly and hope that you will contact us at any point that you have questions about life at St. Bonaventure. There will be several mailers going out in June and July with more specific information about the upcoming school year. Preliminary Calendar In this edition of the Gazette you will find a preliminary calendar for school year 2010-2011. The most significant change will be the completion of the first semester before Christmas vacation. As a result of parent, student and teacher surveys this past year, the overwhelming majority voted to move semester exams prior to Christmas. School Start Freshmen orientation for the Class of 2014 will be Friday, August 20th from 8:30 to 1:30. The first regular day of school is Monday, August 23rd. The first bell rings at 8:21 am Students Planner The student planner also known as the Parent/Student Handbook will be available to all students prior to the start of school. The planner is an excellent “tool” for the student to use to write down homework assignments and keep track of the daily schedule at SBHS. SMART All parents are required to sign up for the SMART tuition management service. If you have not done so, please contact Sandy Arth at extension 104. First payment is due in early July for all families. Closing Out the Books All parent service hours, student Christian service hours, tuition and fees are now past due for the school year 2009-2010. Grades, transcripts and new class schedules will be held by the school until all accounts are up to date. Good Bye and Good Luck A number of teachers are moving to new adventures in their lives and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their many contributions to life at St. Bonaventure. God Bless and have a safe and relaxing vacation. Mr. Groff

Fiesta Success Results are in and this year’s 43rd annual Fiesta. Our raffle sales again exceeded our goal coming in at 102%. After prizes and incentives the total profit from the raffle was $37,523.00. The profits from fiesta itself generated $10,606.89 for a total fiesta profit of $48,129.89. A big thanks to our co-chairs Sheri Salazar, Yvonne Rockwell for coordinating this important community and fundraising event. Our thanks, too, to the many parents, teachers and staff who chaired booths and others areas of planning, and coordination. The fact that we were so successful is a testament to everyone’s dedication to St. Bonaventure High School! Golf Results All indicators pointed to the fact that this year’s tournament’s success would exceed last year. However, actual results for the golf tournament were not available as of the deadline for printing this newslet-ter. Therefore, these results will be included in the next edition of the Green & Gold Gazette. Nevertheless, a big thanks to everyone who worked to make the tournament a success, and to all who participated as sponsors and/or golfers. ALUMNI NEWS: New Alumni Web Page! The long awaited alumni page to our school website was launched March 1st. Alumni can access this page by going to the front page of the school website and clicking on the alumni button. Initially, this new page will allow alumni to enter information into the new alumni data-base for the purpose of receiving the school’s monthly newsletter and communications regarding regular school and special alumni events. Down the line, the intention is the enable this site to function as a network-ing site, whereby alumni can authorize other alumni to access their contact information. Spread the word. Our goal is to make this effort the cornerstone of building a functional alumni association.

“Parents’ Guide To College Life” (courtesy of Robin Baskin, The Broadway Review, Inc., 2006) Parent’s Role During The College Years. These are not the best years of your life. Once the acceptance letters are in, the process of letting go begins. According to Dr. Linda Bips, a psychology professor at Muhlenberg College says it’s not an easy process. Here are her action items for parents:
Start saying goodbye now, in your own ways. Talk about the good times, and anticipate the new ones. Talk about money-who will pay for what and how much. State your expectations regarding grades; remember that college is not high school and adjust those expectations accordingly. Challenge your child to change a possible problematic behavior for six months while he or she thinks about
new values. Be a good listener, but don’t be a fixer. Promise to send lots of email and mail, and set up a weekly phone call. Make sure your child finds the career development office before their senior year. Talk to professors and
career professionals about graduate school and possible careers. Don’t worry if your child hasn’t picked a major by the end of their freshman year; encourage them to take
a variety of classes. What the parents should not do:
Don’t call faculty or staff on your child’s behalf; students need to fend for themselves and take responsibility. Remember this is their college experience, not yours. Discuss class choices with your student, but remember they have advisors to help them deal with majors,
and requirements, graduating on time, and being prepared to enter the work force. Unconditional Love Elizabeth Feeney, PhD., Director of College Counseling Service at Mt. Holyoke College, puts it this way: “Your role as a parent during the college years is to be just that: a parent. You need not be a coach, tutor, aca-demic advisor, matchmaker, cook, private investigator, or therapist. Indeed, your main job is to love your child unconditionally as only a parent can do-because that is the one thing no one else will be able to do for them.” * Visit www.connection-collegeboard.com to view the online publication for up to the minute information from College Board. * For SAT & ACT study guides contact Princeton Review at www.princetonreview.com
