The NameThe NameThis vineyard was planted in the 19thcentury, and received its nickname as it wasthe first in the region to be trained aboveknee height. Over the past four decades,Cabernet Sauvignon from the High Trellisvineyard has been released under thed'Arenberg label to consistent criticalacclaim, and won the coveted JimmyWatson trophy at the 1969 Melbourne WineShow.

The VintagThe VintageeA wet winter ensured good sub soilmoisture and set up the vines well withhealthy canopies. Spring was very dry withabove average temperatures, a heavydownpour in January was a welcome relief.Mild conditions during the ripening periodproduced wines that show an abundance ofspicy fruits with great colour, richness andbalanced tannins. Vintage started on 30January, the earliest start on record by oneday.

The WinemakingThe WinemakingSmall batches of grapes are gently crushedand then transferred to five tonne headeddown open fermenters. These batchesremain separate until final blending. Foottreading is undertaken two thirds of the waythrough fermentation. The wine is thenbasket pressed and transferred to oldAmerican oak barriques to completefermentation. The barrel ferments are agedon lees, and there is no racking until finalblending. This wine does not undertakefining or filtration prior to bottling.

The CharacterisThe CharacteristicsticsDo not be fooled by price, this is seriousCabernet territory. Packed densely with anabundance of character, blackcurrant, plum, violet, cigar box and cedar. The noseis intensely aromatic and the palate is tight, concentrated and long. Tense and punchyupon opening, allow this wine to settle andbreathe to release the generous volumes offruit that are wound up within the tightlyclenched structure. Or better still, carefulcellaring will reap rewards for those withpatience.
