7. Expert Opinion
7.1 Magnus McEwen-King, CEO, QinetiQ OptaSense QinetiQ OptaSense is a fully owned subsidiary of QinetiQ Group plc, headquartered in
Farnborough, Hampshire, UK. QinetiQ OptaSense provides acoustic sensing systems for a range
of global industries and verticals, ranging from security and border control to pipeline infrastructure
security and the oil and gas industry.
For this interview, Visiongain interviewed Mr Magnus McEwen-King, CEO, in October 2013; we
thank him for his involvement.
7.1.1 Background and Role with OptaSense Visiongain: Please could you describe your background and role with OptaSense?
McEwen-King: I’m the CEO and one of the founders of OptaSense within the QinetiQ Group. We
started this back in September 2007 so we’ve now been in business for six years. For the first
couple of years, we were a handful of people, the major growth in employees (from a starting point
of 3 to 163 today) has happened in the last four years.
7.1.2 How Does OptaSense’s Business Relationship With QinetiQ plc
Function? Visiongain: How strong is your overall relationship with QinetiQ? Do you have a separate sales
team or do you profit from this business relationship?
McEwen-King: OptaSense is a one hundred per cent owned subsidiary of the QinetiQ Group but
is run as an autonomous entity. We draw on technical skill set or QinetiQ and the
corporate/financial credibility of a FTSE 250 listed company. The core part of the QinetiQ Group is
focused on the defence industry where as OptaSense is exploring international Oil & Gas and
security markets.
I run the OptaSense Group on a worldwide basis and report directly to the Group CEO. We have
an excellent working relationship with QinetiQ Group and jointly pursue defence & security sales
opportunities e.g. border security applications. We do however have a dedicated sales force
pursuing international oil and gas related opportunities e.g. pipeline security in Iraq.

8. Leading Companies in the Homeland Security Market This chapter details ten of the leading companies within the homeland security sector. Due to the
wide-ranging nature of products offered within this market, this selection should in no way be
considered conclusive and is representative of a selection made based on companies which
occupy a leading niche in the sector, but who may not necessarily encompass the entire spectrum
of HLS solutions.
