What is the immune system?

• The immune system is one of our nine systems.

• It tries to prevent you from getting sick.• In many ways it is like a security guard.• For example the immune system keeps out

bad germs/guests.• It has four main organs, but a total of nine.

How can you improve your Immune System?

TonsilsWhat are the tonsils? – Tonsils are pieces of tissue

located at the back of your mouth.

How do they help you?- The tonsils act like a defense system by blocking out some harmful pathogens.

Fact- Some doctors say that by removing your tonsils your immune system strength can decrease.

ThymusWhat is the Thymus- A thymus is one of your

Immune System’s organs, located in front of your heart.

How does it help you?- By making T-Cells. T-Cells are cells that destroy harmful pathogens.

Fact- T-Cell stands for Thymus LymphocytesT-Cell

Spleen

What is the Spleen? – Your Spleen is an organ located under your left lung.

How does it help you? – It removes old blood cells and stores blood incase of a shock.

Fact- The word ‘’Spleen’’ comes from Greek. It has the same meaning as heart if you translate it.

Lymph NodesWhat are Lymph Nodes?- Lymph

Nodes are small organs located all around your body, but mainly in the neck.

How do they help you?- They warn your body when a virus is in it.

Fact- When you have a fever and your neck and body hurts, that means you have Swollen Lymph Nodes.

Bone MarrowWhat is Bone Marrow?- Bone Marrow is a

flexible tissue located in your bones.

How does it help you?- It stops the backflow of lymph. Lymph is used to pick up bacteria and brings them to the Lymph Nodes to be destroyed.

Fact- Many doctors do not consider Bone Marrow an Immune System organ.

AppendixWhat is the Appendix?- Your

Appendix is an organ located near your Large Intestine.

How does it help you?- By helping to fight harmful microbes in your body.

Fact- Some doctors remove your Appendix because they consider it as a pointless organ.

Lymphatic Vessels

What are Lymphatic Vessels?- Lymphatic Vessels are a network of vessels that carry lymph.

How does it help your body?- Lymph picks up harmful bacteria, takes it back to the Lymph Nodes and destroys it.

Fact- Hippocrates was one of the first people in history to talk about the Lymphatic System.

Peyer’s PatchesWhat are Peyer’s Patches? – They

are small pieces of tissue located around your body.

How do they help you?- They act like Tonsils, except they prevent bacteria from breaching your small intestine.

Fact – Peyer’s Patches are named after the Swiss Anatomist, Johan Conrad Peyer
