THE KPL SPHINXSEPTEMBER 2013
From Bro. Kerry G. JohnsonAssociate Editor to The Sphinx
Brothers: I hope that you and your families enjoyed an active and adventurous summer break. Now it’s time to get back to the work of Alpha’s motto: “First of All, Servants of All, We Shall Transcend”. Once again, I look forward to providing our Kappa Phi Lambda Brotherhood and the Central Maryland re-gion with informative news and articles that
involve and promote Alpha throughout our community. Since June was the chapter’s last meeting, I want to remind current and new Brothers of KPL of our newly-elected officers. The photo and positions can be found on Page 2. For submissions for future issues of The KPL Sphinx, my contact infor-mation is listed here:

The Parliamentarian’s CornerAlpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. uses Robert’s Rules of Order at chap-ter meetings. These widely-accepted procedures should ensure that all members of Kappa Phi Lambda have equal footing during discussion and debate. These processes also state that the majority rules when a vote is needed. The original book published in 1876 was called Pocket Manual for Rules of Order for Deliberative Assemblies. To find more information, visit this link: http://www.robertsrules.org/
Occasionally, in a means to “refresh” the Brotherhood of the Robert’s Rules of Order, the chapter’s appointed parliamentarian, Bro. Cecil G. Christian, Jr. will provide insight with a column, entitled: The Parlia-mentarian’s Corner_______________________________________________________Reprinted from Sept. 3, 2011
Parliamentary law enables deliberative bodies (usually 12 or more in-dividuals) meeting to determine in open discussion the action to be taken in the name of the entire organization. The body is to maintain order; transact business expeditiously; and maintain justice and cour-tesy to individuals, the majority, the minority, absentees and all of these together. Kappa Phi Lambda Chapter is a local assembly where per-sons are recorded on the rolls as voting members in good standing.
The Meeting Process1. Call to Order: The president, after determining that a quorum is present, calls the meeting to order.
2. Opening: Invocation as prescribed by the chapter – Prayer.
3. Adopt the Agenda: This is accomplished by majority vote for each meeting.4. Standard Order of Business: a. Reading and approval of minutes. Official record of all business transacted. b. Reports of officers and standing committees. The treasurer’s report is not acted upon by the chapter, but filed pending an audit.
c. Reports of special committees
d. Special orders
e. Unfinished business and general orders. f. New business: Members introduce any relative items of business.
g. Announcements
h. Program: Educational or entertainment, etc.
i. Adjournment: Declared by the president. j. Closing: Singing of the fraternity hymn.
