The London MedTech Review and Directory 2017
Foreword
London is a global city and a powerhouse of scientific innovation and research. Its financial
centre, pro-business fiscal environment, with incentives such as R&D tax credits and the
Patent Box, and a strong presence of business incubators, supports investment and business
growth. London boasts one of the world's best clusters of medical research facilities,
comprising internationally-renowned universities, hospitals and a huge and diverse NHS
patient population. All this provides a highly supportive environment for the
commercialisation and application of health technology. Indeed, London accommodates
some of the most innovative health technology companies with particular excellence in
areas such as digital health.
London’s MedTech sector is sizeable at 239 firms. In 2015, the Greater London Authority (GLA)
collaborated with the South East Health Technology Alliance (SEHTA) and MedCity to identify
who was in the cluster, and what support they needed to grow.
Over the past three years, this collaboration – ‘MedTech London’ - has responded to the
sector’s growth needs through providing networking opportunities, support in accessing the
market (for example, through Innovation Surgeries on how to access the NHS) and training
workshops (such as on cost-benefit analysis). MedTech London, funded primarily by the GLA,
aims to help London realise its potential in health technology for the economic benefit of
London, its companies and the health benefits of its population. The foundations of this
endeavour are the health technology companies, particularly the Small and Medium - sized
Enterprises (SMEs – companies with fewer than 250 employees) and the need to enable
greater collaboration across the sector to spur further innovation and bring new products
and services to market.
This London MedTech Review and Directory starts to identify who is in the sector, where they
are and what they do. We encourage you to feed-back, correct and fill in any gaps. The
Directory is accessible online at www.sehta.co.uk/londonmedtechdirectory. With your input,
it will be kept up to date on a regular basis. Please contact Clare Ansett with your
suggestions ([email protected]).
This document also offers comment on particular sub-sectors which are emerging, and some
thoughts for the future. We plan to release updated versions on an annual basis, keeping
pace with the growth and strengthening of this exciting sector in London.

The Partnership
The Greater London Authority (GLA) consists of the elected Mayor of London and the 25
member London Assembly. It was established in 2000 as a strategic regional authority with
powers over transport, economic development and fire and emergency planning. The GLA
economic development agenda involves supporting policy and projects to help companies
in London to flourish, grow and to attract new companies into the City.

The South East Health Technologies Alliance (SEHTA) is a not for profit company founded in
2006 which provides support to the health technology community. SEHTA is one of the largest
networking organisations in the country with over 1300 members from 20 different countries
and a health-related database in excess of 7000 contacts. SEHTA is also a Member
Organisation of MedilinkUK, representing South East England. Through its partnerships in a
number of publicly and privately funded projects, SEHTA provides significant support to
companies, universities and public and private health providers. It provides leveraged
support to the London MedTech cluster.

MedCity exists to promote and grow life sciences investment, entrepreneurship and industry
in The Golden Triangle of Cambridge, London, Oxford and the Greater South East.
A collaboration between the Mayor of London and the five Academic Health Science
Centres in the region, MedCity acts as a front door for industry, researchers and investors
looking for partners, infrastructure and expertise. From drug discovery to devices, diagnostics

Overview
The London MedTech Directory contains 239 London-based MedTech companies, mostly
SMEs, which have been classified according to 21 sub-sectors (see Figure 1 for distribution of
London MedTech companies across each of the sub-sectors listed in Table 1). The sub-sector
classification is based on that used in the annual publication ‘Strength and Opportunity’ from
the Department of International Trade (DIT, formerly UKTI) and Office for Life Sciences (OLS).
There is acceptance that attempts to classify companies in such a diverse sector, who may
themselves operate in several sub- sectors, is difficult and may on occasion be subjective.
40% of the London-based MedTech companies are in the digital health sector. The next most
populous sub-sectors are the collective of diagnostics companies (In-vitro, Single use and re-
useable), closely followed by Supply Chain; the latter is perhaps not unexpected given
London’s pivotal position as service-sector provider in the national economy.

The Future
It is always dangerous to attempt to predict the future, especially in a sector which changes
as rapidly as health and care technology, nevertheless three strategic drivers are clear:
Population, Policy and Technology.
Population: The ageing population is creating unprecedented levels of demand for health
and care services, requiring that new approaches be adopted for delivering health and
care as budgets continue to be squeezed. In England, the greatest opportunities for tackling
this problem lie in the treatment and care of the 15 million people with long-term conditions
such as diabetes, dementia, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), hypertension
and arthritis. Long-term conditions such as these consume around 70% of the total health
and care budget in the UK and so are the focus of the majority of NHS initiatives and policies
today.
Policy: At present, the UK spends around £120 billion per year on the NHS, which is just over
9% of GDP. This compares to over 17% of GDP expenditure in the USA. The NHS is, by
international standards, an efficient and effective health system. However, future funding
requirements fall well short of government provision in times of austerity and there are real
challenges to meet efficiency targets. The result of this is that any offer to the health service
has to be more efficient and cost effective than existing provision and competitors (“more
for less”).
The policy push towards integration of health and social care is likely to result in new service
and product opportunities (more homecare, for example) as will the push towards digital
health which includes digital roadmaps as part of Sustainability and Transformation Plans
(STPs). There are also government agendas around self-management, prevention and better
mental health care which will provide opportunities for both research and industry.
Technology: Health and care sector businesses are not immune to the trap of attempting to
push technology into markets that are not receptive because they do not meet needs.
However, there are some profound technological developments emerging which will result in
new products, services and systems of considerable benefit to health and care providers
and citizens, including: digital health (mobile health, telecare, telehealth, wearables, big
data, health informatics); personalised health or precision medicine based upon
understanding of genomes, helping in the development and deployment of more effective
pharmaceuticals, often alongside companion diagnostics; advanced materials and
engineering, working towards bespoke 3-D printed biocompatible synthetic and organic
tissue replacements; regenerative medicine creating organs and tissues regenerated both in
the body and in-vitro; robotics assisting in surgery and in care.
With these three strategic drivers forming the backdrop of future health and social care
market needs and trends, it is clear that the most competitive products and services will
emerge at the interface of health and social care, engineering and digital technologies.
Based on feedback from firms, we believe that one of the greatest benefits the London
MedTech cluster has to offer is networking and contacts. London has the potential to lead
the world in the revolution in health and care, but it will need the networks and relationships
among its businesses, universities, research organisations and funders to enable collaboration
and co-create the new models of health and care we will need in the next 5-10 years.

The London MedTech Directory
Below is the Directory of health technology companies contained in the London MedTech
cluster database. The companies have been categorised according to sub-sectors used by
the National UK Life Sciences Database from the Department of International Trade (DIT,
formerly UKTI) and Office for Life Sciences (OLS).
The Directory is accessible online at www.sehta.co.uk/londonmedtechdirectory. With your
input, it will be kept up to date. We encourage you to feedback, correct any information
and fill any gaps. If you have not been listed and would like to be, or have any other
suggestions, please contact Clare Ansett ([email protected]).
