The abundance of water power led to the development of a healthy manufacturing community supported by rail transportation and commercial enterprises. State Boat Launching Area(E1)onWestHillPond. American Legion State Forest (782 acres) and Peoples State Forest (2,954acres)lieonoppositesidesofthe West Branch of the Farmington River. They provide opportunitiesforpicnicking,camping,canoeingandfishing. Some trails are used for cross-country skiing. Tunxis State Forest(8,141acres)liesinbothBarkhamstedand Hartland. The Tunxis Trail, one of the blue-blazed trails main- tainedbytheConnecticutForest&ParksAssociationrunsthe length of the forest. The Forest Service road to Pine Mountain (A7)isusedinwinterforcross-countryskiing. Lake McDonough(E5)ownedandoperatedbytheWater Bureau of the Metropolitan District for stream control, provides opportunityforfishing,boating,picnickingandswimming.History: This area was part of the land Windsor acquired for settlement,whichbeganin1746.Thetown,incorporatedin 1779,wasnamedforBarkhamstedintheEnglishCountyof Hertford. Lambert Hitchcock started to make chair parts in 1818. The village around the factory was called Hitchcockville.
