New School Plan
I have again published the 2018-2020 School Plan. It is worth
the time to read because it outlines our plans for our school
and your students for the next two and a half years. I am very
proud of the plan and the way the staff and students have
collaborated on such an important issue. If you would like to
comment please do so through the regular channels.
Opportunities for students
The past couple of weeks have been great for our students.
We have had SEC & House Council speeches, sports carnivals,
fundraiser for our school musical and assemblies where the
ambassadors were working with their peers to collect their
opinions about how we can make our school better. I note
each week at our Executive meeting the amount of "other
activities available to our students besides attending classes.
The students really do benefit from participating as much as
possible in all the extra curricula activities available. This is not
to mention homework centre, a free maths tutor on
Wednesday afternoons and amazing excursion opportunities.
The staff give so freely of their time to make our school a
great experience for our students.
Student Voice
We are exploring as part of our school plan including our
students as co-authors and planners of classroom work. We
are also working on giving them influence in governance. I had
4 students on the finance team and I look forward to working
with them to add their opinions about how the money in our
school is spent. I really do appreciate their advice and
opinions. As a result of the students having lots of
opportunities for their idea to be heard they are coming to
talk to me more often and it is exactly what our schools need.
Apart from that the students are articulate, imaginative and
great problem solvers. It is a privilege to work with such
fantastic students.

Bunnings BBQ Fundraiser for the Musical
Thank you to all the parents, staff and students who helped
out on Sunday for our Musical fundraising BBQ at Rouse Hill
Bunnings. A HUGE thanks goes to P&C President David Kempe
who organised the food items and manned the BBQ all day!
Thanks also goes to Mrs Warner for baking many cupcakes to
sell as part of the fundraiser. We raised $980 for the musical!!

Student Voice
On Tuesday 22nd May all students of Kellyville HS had the
opportunity to voice their opinions on school matters such as
The School Environment, Wellbeing, assessments, activities in
the school, relationships and how their voices can be better
heard. These small focus groups were led by student voice
ambassadors that were trained by the Welfare Team. These
students self-elected themselves and took their role seriously
and enthusiastically. It was a spectacle to be seen. Whole year
groups focused on discussions on things that concerned them.
The following day the welfare team collated the information
and will report back to the Ambassadors on Friday 8th June
where they will identify commonalities across year groups and
form a plan for the next 12 months. I would like to thank all
the students for their time and their contributions to the
discussions. The mature approach was greatly appreciated.

THE MAGIC of MUSIC
IEF students are taking part in Music practical activities by
working collaboratively with mainstream Yr 10 music students.
This enables our students to feel part of the school community
and build friendships. Music is considered a ‘whole brain’
activity and the skills our students acquire in the music
program can have many positive academic and social effects.
Also, through musical experiences students are able to adapt
to different learning styles, which can benefit them in other
key learning areas.
Our IEF musicians aim to achieve these goals:
• To expand knowledge of and appreciation of different types
of music
• To learn about reading and writing music
• To have a go at composing and performing music
Importantly, we aim for our students to enjoy learning about
music and to explore their creative and musical abilities.

Duke of Edinburgh
The first time I went camping at Newnes was with my father in
1970. I was only 10 years old. We slept on the bare ground in
a musty canvas tent strung between two trees. We cooked
with a caste iron fry pan on an open fire. Newnes still amazes
me every time I visit and I am so grateful for the memories it
has given me. I am proud to take such a fine group of students
back to a place of some of my best childhood memories.
When a person feels grateful, they’ll work harder and longer
to pay others back as well as pay favours forward. When a
person feels proud, they’ll devote more effort to developing
skills that others value.
The weather was good to us over the three days. There was so
much wildlife this time. Kangaroos and Wallabies in the
evening and at night so many brush-tail possums with their
beady eyes staring at us from the dark then getting in to the
rubbish when we weren’t looking. One more adventurous
chap even chewed their way in to someone’s tent to get a
banana. That caused quite a commotion at 3am! Thank you
Cassie for coming to the rescue.
Thursday morning was only -2°C and there was a good frost on
the ground and on our tents. Standing around the camp fire, a
hot breakfast soon warmed us up and we were ready for an
11km hike to the Glow Worm Tunnel. The start was 380m of
elevation climbing, quite mentally challenging, but satisfying
when we got to the top. The Glow Worm Tunnel is always a
delight to see and never disappoints.
The teachers were all so impressed that there was no
whinging or complaining on the way. Everyone one worked
well together. Students who focus more on their own future
selves as well as with others, build greater self-esteem. There
is an increase in perseverance and decreased procrastination,
but also with reduced stress, reduced loneliness, and
enhanced well-being.
I tried out some new camping equipment and apps for my
phone. I used my Nalgalene bottle as a hot water bottle in my
sleeping bag; and the calf length gaiters are now a must. Even
though it was cool, we did see a baby red-belly black snake. I
used my phone to call some fairy wrens to our site with the
“Bird Song Id AU” app.
It is experiences like the Duke of Edinburgh’s International
Award that give students the opportunity to solve problems,
shows them how to be grateful rather than seeking
gratification, how to be resourceful, show compassion
towards others, and give them a sense of pride.
A journey with a purpose is the number one, long-term
motivator in life. Unlike passion or ambition, which focus on
the self, purpose touches on the needs of the others. On this
journey we were very grateful to have our Gold Duke of
Edinburgh leaders, Sarah (possum) C and Georgia G join us by
taking on leadership roles to support others just like
themselves.
