PFC George Marion Eiland Remembered
{Eiland Pronounced Like "Island")
The PFC George Eiland Detachment 1040, of the Marine Corps League was chartered in 2000 and chose the late PFC George Marion Eiland of LaGrange to be the detachment's namesake. PFC Eiland was killed on lwo Jima on March 9, 1945.
The following excerpts are from a book written by Dr. John Thomas West, MD, and LaGrange Daily News archived articles.
PFC George Eiland
LaGrange Daily News 03/09/00: MARINE LEAGUE CHARTER CEREMONY SLATED: NAME TO HONOR MEMORY OF FALLEN COMRADE EILAND: Local Marine Corps veterans have established a detachment of the Marine Corps League. The detachment has been named in honor of Pfc. George Eiland, Weapons Company, 27th Marines, Fifth Marine Division.
Dr. John Thomas West writes: George Marion Eiland was born in LaGrange, Georgia, the son of William H. Eiland and Ella Fisher Eiland, the youngest of three. He attended LaGrange High School where he played football and was a star performer at the guard position. He was known to his high school friends as "Hog" because of his ability to consume massive quantities of hot dogs. He and his brother W.H. Eiland, Jr. were well known for their ability to rehabilitate old Model T Fords with bailing wire and the like.
After graduating from High School he attended Georgia Military Academy at Milledgeville, Georgia. He continued his athletic activities on varsity football team at the Academy. He was also trained as a field telephone operator.
His brother, William H. Eiland, Jr., also served in the United States Marine Corps. George Marion Eiland was killed in action at the battle for lwo Jima, and his mother received, posthumously in his honor, the Bronze Star with combat "V", and the following Presidential Citation .
.,For heroic service as a member of a Marine Battalion, serving with Weapons Company, Twenty Seventh Marines, Fifth Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on lwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 5 March, 1945. Voluntarily serving with a machine gun crew at the front lines, Private First Class Eiland reportedly ran forward in the face of heavy enemy fire to determine the positions of cleverly concealed emplacements; he courageously manned his own weapon and continued to fire upon those enemy positions until he was severely wounded . .,
He was buried at that site on lwo Jima, but later his remains were returned to LaGrange for interment at Shadowlawn Cemetery. In addition to the Bronze Star, his family also received, in his honor, the Purple Heart posthumously.
The family tells the story that on March 9th, 1945 his father, a local pharmacist, walked home from City Drug Store, in tears and telling his wife that their son, George Marion, was dead as of this date - that somehow he just knew that to be a fact. A few days later they received the first official notification of the death of George Marion Eiland. The LaGrange Detachment of the Marine Corps League is named for Private First Class George Marion Eiland.
LaGrange Dailv News 4/02/45: "Private First Class George Marion Eiland, 20, with the Fifth Division of the United States Marines, died March 9th of wounds received in action on lwo Jima volcano island, the War Department informed his parents, Mr. & Mrs. W.H. Eiland, here, Sunday. PFC Eiland graduated from LaGrange High School and attended Georgia Military College in Milledgeville. He entered the armed forces in December 1942, and trained at Parris Island South Carolina, New River, NC and Camp Pendleton, California as a Paramarine until that branch of the service was discontinued. He went overseas in August, 1944. Surviving are his parents, Mr. & Mrs. W.H. Eiland of LaGrange, a sister, Mrs. Eugene Glover of LaGrange; a brother, William H. Eiland, Jr. of New Orleans, La., who was recently given a medical discharge from the Marines afterservice in the Pacific."
LaGrange Daily News 7/23/47: "Mrs. W.H. Eiland of 110 Hill Street has received the Bronze Star Medal with Combat "V" for her son, the late PFC George M. Eiland. He was awarded the medal for gallant action against entrenched Japanese on lwo Jima Island, March 7th, 1945, while serving with the 27th Marines of the Fifth Marine Division. His actions resulted in his death from enemy fire. LtCol J.P. Coursey, USMC Commanding Officer of the Marine Detachment at the Naval Air Station, Atlanta made the presentation at ceremonies in the station's gymnasium. Mrs. Eugene Glover, Mrs. Eiland's daughter, accompanied Mrs. Eiland to Atlanta for the award. The late PFC Eiland was cited by James Forrestal, Secretary of the Navy, for President Truman, for his gallant action in locating and attacking Japanese machine gun emplacements on lwo Jima."
LaGrange Daily News 12/17/48: "The remains of PFC George Marion Eiland, 20, who was killed on lwo Jima during WWII, will arrive in LaGrange Tuesday. Private First Class Eiland was born in Troup County and before joining the Marines in December 1942 was a student at Georgia Military College ... " 12/21/48: "Pall bearers will be Joe Daniel, Arthur Bradfield, Jr., G.L. Cahall, Jr., John Newman, Grady Traylor, Alton Daniel, Jr., Arthur Ward and William Martin."
The PFC George Eiland Detachment wishes to thank Dr. John Thomas West for allowing Semper Fi to use key excerpts from his book, "'For Love of Country"'.
