School Song
Loyal sons of Patrick Hail,
Our Alma Mater dear,
fount of learning, Home of faith,
The Hall we all revere;
Royal banners to the fore
Round them shall we stand,
Steadfast to our colors,
And to God and native land.
Loyal sons of Patrick seek
To live St. Patrick's way;
Scholar, saint, and gentlemen
In all we do and say.
Ever shall we stand by all
The fine ideals we knew,
Men of Patrick ever be
Courageous, pure and true.

On behalf of the Organizing Committee of the St. Patrick's Hall reunion we wish to extend our sincere greetings to all past presidents of the Patrician Association, past principals of St. Patrick's Hall School, past teachers and pupils who have come from near and far to attend this reunion.
We are sure that this reunion will give the opportunity to renew old acquaintances and make new friends; and as ex-pupils to be confident in the fact that the spirit that was ours is still strong and unfolding in a newer generation of young people. As each one of us rehashes a lot from school days, and as well from days thereafter, let's try to avoid thinking of the bad times and concentrate on all the happy ones - sports days, hockey games, St. Paddy's Day concerts, and so on.
This is probably a once-in-a-lifetime event for most, if not all of us. Bearing in mind that we are here "Not for a long time, but rather for a good time" let's all enjoy ourselves to the fullest. Let us leave this reunion with memories to carry us through the years as we rejoice in our Alma Mater and its school colours. Keep the green and gold on high!

Message from His Grace
Most Rev. A.L. Penney
Archbishop of St. ] ohn 's
Dear Ex-pupils of St. Patrick's Hall School ,
I rejoice to have the privilege of participating in your 1987 reunion. This reunion will be an occasion to recall memories of your school days and renew acquaintanceships and friendships made during those happy days. It will also be an occasion to share your journeys of life since you parted ways following school leaving. In a particular way will it also be an opportunity to get in touch with your teachers and their careers, especially the Christian Brothers.
Through St. Patrick's Hall School a Catholic Education was provided to you. I ask your reflection on how it enabled you to cope with life and its many demands. I also solicit your interest, input and support of our Catholic System of Education through school groups such as the Parent Teacher Association and by membership on the Roman Catholic School Board.
I hope your reunion will be successful and happy.
God bless you and yours,
Faithfully in the Lord,
~/.~.¥- . Archbishop of St. John's

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
I would like to avail of this opportunity to extend greetings to all those gathered for the St. Patrick's Hall School Reunion, '87; and, at the same time, to compliment the Reunion Committee for its initiative in bringing about such a worthwhile event. This will be a marvelous chance to renew old friendships and make new ones.
Since 1876, St. Patrick's Hall School has contributed immeasurably to the educational needs of our youth; and has proven to be an outstanding influence for good in the building of our community.
The training received at the hands of dedicated religious and lay people will, I am sure, continue to prepare our young citizens for entrance into institutions of higher learning; and to take their rightful place in our varied society.
In congratulating the principal and teachers of today, I wish those of the future every success in all their undertakings.

Message from the Provincial Superior
On behalf of the Congregation of Christian Brothers in Canada, I would like to extend sincere best wishes to all ex-pupils of St. Patrick's Hall School on the occasion of Reunion '87.
St. Pat's, as the first permanent establishment of the Christian Brothers in the Western Hemisphere, has always held a special position in the minds and hearts of the Brothers. It is my sincere and confident hope that the relationship between the Brothers and the St. Patrick's Hall community, which has developed and flourished over the past 111 years, will continue for many years to come.
Bro. F.G. Hepditch

ST. PATRICK'S HALL SCHOOL
H•I•S•T•O•R•Y
[Q] n the occasion of the first official reunion of ex-pupils of St. Patrick's Hall, July 30-August 1, 1987, we dedicate this history to the thousands of boys who attended our Alma Mater.
The history of St. Patrick's Hall begins with the arrival of the Irish Christian Brothers to Newfoundland on January 20, 1876 and the opening of the Brothers first school also in January 1876.
The Brothers first taught in the Orphan Asylum which stood near the site of the present B.I.S. Hall. Soon after the opening, the attendance at the school became so great that it was deemed imperative to provide further accommodation. The B.I.S. society began the construction of St. Patrick's Hall in July 1877. The building was a threestorey stone structure with the classrooms located on the second floor. On August 15, 1880, the school was solemnly blessed by Bishop Power. Thus began the tradition and high standard that would become the hallmark of St. Pat's.
St. Pat's was also to become a pioneer foundation from which the Irish Christian Brothers congregation extended its work to the United States, Canada, South America and the West Indies. The original student body of the "Hall" consisted of 300 boys and the first principal was Brother Holland.
From the first days, the founding Brothers endeavoured to ensure that the system of education provided at St. Pat's remain sensitive to the special needs and aspirations of boys from varied economic backgrounds. In the words of one of its most prominent teachers, Brother J.L. Slattery, the school's purpose was " to provide, through its general , academic, and commercial programs, the means for entrance into all occupations and to allow any boy who graduated from its classes to knock at the door of any university".
One of the founding Brothers, Brother Prenderville, established courses in Shorthand, French, Free-Hand Drawing and Electrical Science. Thus began the tradition of a commercial department, which was to continue to the 1960s under the Aegis of such renowned teachers as O'Hehir, Murphy, Murray, Angel , Brennan and Keaveney.
In 1892, the great fire completely gutted St. Patrick's Hall despite the herculean efforts of the Brothers to save the building. The Brothers moved to a temporary school until repairs were complete.
The next important event in the life of the school was the erection of the O'Donel Wing to the B.I.S. Hall. This edifice was a memorial to the first Vicar Apostolic, Bishop O'Donel, under whose patronage the Benevolent Irish Society had begun its work in 1806. Four hundred boys were accommodated in the new building. Another inno-
8
vation at that time was the establishment of the Catholic Cadet Corps; a brigade which was intended to help boys navigate the troublesome years of adolescence. The cadet corps became a very important part of school life at St. Pat's under such renowned names as Capt. J.J. O'Grady and, in later years, Capt. G.B. Malone.
The second decade of the 1900s witnessed the finest years of musical productions that St. John's had ever experienced under the talented direction of Brother M.C. Ryan and with the guidance of Sir Charles Hutton, the operettas, "Agatha", "Mikado", and "Sorcerer" were in popular vogue and acclaim. Under the guidance of future Brothers and especially Brother T.l. Murphy, St. Patrick's Hall choral groups carried on a fine tradition by their participation in the various liturgical functions in the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist.
The St. Pat's Dancers were also founded in the same decade, however they did not become famous until the late fifties and early sixties. Prior to this they performed only in concerts on St. Patrick's Day and were known as the Irish Dancers.
Although public examinations were established as early as 1894 and competing students achieved significant successes, they were dropped some years later. With the return of public examinations in the 1930s, outstanding results were recorded.
By the late 1920s attendance had risen to seven hundred and sixty-seven. Space was at a premium in St. Pat's so with the co-operation of His Grace Archbishop Roche and the Holy Name Society, some of the senior classes were moved to the Holy Name Hall on Harvey Road in 1932. This move filled the need temporarily but by 1940 the problem was more acute. The construction of a new school was announced and work began in the spring of 1944. In December of the same year, the new St. Patrick's Hall School on Merrymeeting Road was dedicated by Archbishop E.P. Roche.
Brother J.P. Keane, Principal of St. Pat's in the 1940s, established Junior Matriculation classes. This was in addition to the firmly established Grade Eleven Commercial courses. The fruitful impact of the 1940s paved the way for truly spectacular academic and scholarly achievements during the last years of the high school department when the total enrolment in elementary and secondary levels stood at 2,000 students.
The annals of Mount St. Francis reveal that Brother M.O. O'Hehir's greatest achievement over the period from 1906-1940 was his vigilant efforts on behalf of needy boys.
Brother O'Hehir, along with Mr. J.A. Clancy, was also the founder of the Patrician Association in 1929. The Association has provided monumental assistance in the financial affairs of the school, under the guidance of such renowned Presidents as
9
Messrs. J.A. Clancy, Gerry Angel , W.F. Chafe, Ank Murphy, Frank Wall , C. Congdon, G.B. Malone, L. Madden, J. Lawlor and Jim Browne.
There is an impressive I"'.Jmber of St. Patrick's Hall ex-pupils prominent in all walks of life. They proclaim with all enthusiasm and pride of grateful ex-pupils, the salutary effects of the Christian Brothers who showed the fine ideals we know. The theme of our school song reflects this same pride " Ever shall we stand by all the fine ideals we knew, men of Patrick ever be courageous, pure and true."
The history of our school would not be complete without acknowledging its athletic achievements. There is no doubt that the 1950s were the greatest years in winning school championships. St. Pat's won its first high school hockey championship in 1956; the first of five consecutive wins to 1960. It was won for the final time in 1962, the last year St. Pat's was a high school. In junior high school soccer, the team went undefeated four years in a row and won five consecutive championships fro~ 1953-1957. St. Pat's also captured the junior high school basketball championship from 1953-1957. In 1949 St. Pat's won the high school soccer championship and it was also the fifth championship in a row.
The Brothers played a great part in these endeavours and the teaching of such greats as Brothers Slattery, Moore, Fitzpatrick, Howard, Lindemann and Shaw did much in forming strong characters in our students, enlivening and encouraging competition.
The roll call of Principals F.L. Holland, R.B. Fleming, A.P. Kennedy, M.C. Ryan , M.C. Ahern , M.O. O'Hehir, S.C. Murphy, J.P. Keane, B.B. Galway, E.R. Kielly, C.P. O'Dwyer, J.G. Shea, D.F. Nash, E.B. Wakeham, H.B. French, G.M. Dwyer, L. Taylor, A.M. Murphy and K.J . Murphy proclaim the common but progressive concern that has adequately met the winds of change and continued the tradition established within the hallowed halls of St. Patrick's Hall. It is this tradition , challenging us to meet our personal potential in all aspects of life, that we salute. This living tradition of purity of mind and heart, and truth in thought and deed is witnessed here by our gathering to celebrate the past and reaffirm our commitment to the future.

~ t. Pat's has had a long and illustrious history and you have ~ been an important part of it.
The following pages of photographs chronicle the past several decades of activity in and around our Alma Mater.
You may find yourself in some of these, or your best friend, your classmates, a memorable teacher or your favorite sports team. You will immediately recognize the faces, the places, the haircuts and the clothes, and you will eventually find someone you know, that's for sure.
So take some time to look at our photographic history of St. Pat's and have some fun doing so. And, while you are looking at the pictures let your mind drift back to those days when you and your classmates roamed the corridors and the grounds of this wonderful institution.

NOTES
I
THE PREtvtl ER
THE GOVERNMENT OF THE PROVINCE . OF NEWFOUNDLAND, AND LABRADOR
MESSAGE FROM THE HONOURABLE A. BRIAN PECKFORD, PREMIER OF NEWFOUNDLAND & LABRADOR
I am delighted to extend best wishes to all people attending the First Reunion of ex-pupils of St. Patrick's Hall School.
No doubt, this will be a very nostalgic time for all those who attend this Reunion as you renew friendships and exchange stories of your tenure at this renowned St. John's educational institution. The fact that this is a general gathering of former St. Pat's students, and not just those from one year, will no doubt make the Reunion even more interesting as pupils of different periods compare stories that outline the history of St. Pat's on the local scene.
On behalf of my Colleagues in Government, best wishes for a memorable event.
VSr,~f)~~· A. Brian Peckford, P.C., M.H.A. Premier
