Message from 2007 MLA President Michael HolquistStep right up—to one of the greatest humanist shows on earth! The MLA is a big top that embraces the whole spectrum of our profession. No matter your rank, your age, your specialty, the MLA has a place for you. It not only advocates diversity, it embodies it. Through the work of its committees, publications, and conferences, the MLA is there for all of us. It is our home.
I invite you to join the MLA because the greater our numbers, the more we can do together. of language and literature, the Modern Language Association is today one of
the largest humanities organizations in the world, with members in more than a

Long a forum for intellectual exchange, the MLA Annual Convention brings members together each December to explore new avenues of research, discover connections among fields, confer with scholars who share their interests, and renew friendships. Members organize hundreds of events—workshops, forums, sessions, readings, dinners, and receptions. An exhibit hall features books, software, and other products from more than 150 suppliers. The Job Information Center provides a centralized location for interviews, counseling, and information about employment. The annual Delegate Assembly meeting focuses on a range of issues affecting association governance, policy statements, and professional matters.

The MLA publishes a variety of books on the teaching of language and literature, for students, teachers, and scholars. Best known to students is the widely adopted MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, which sets standards for citation in research papers. The MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing discusses the preparation of manuscripts, theses, and dissertations. MLA International BibliographyThe MLA International Bibliography provides an annual classified listing and subject index of over 65,000 books and articles published worldwide. Offering electronic access to over 1.7 million citations from 1926 to the present, as well as links to JSTOR’s language and literature collection from 1880, and covering literature, language, film, linguistics, and folklore, the MLA Bibliography is available online and in print.
ADE & ADFL BulletinsNoted for surveys and coverage of professional and pedagogical issues affecting language and literature departments, the ADE and ADFL Bulletins feature essays on undergraduate and graduate curricula, approaches to teaching, and faculty development. Published by the Association of Departments of English, the ADE Bulletin also contains book reviews and articles on working conditions. The ADFL Bulletin, published by the Association of Departments of Foreign Languages, includes essays on institutional and governmental policies concerning language study and on international studies and other related disciplines. Both journals appear three times a year.
MLA Divisions and Discussion Groups The membership of the association is organized into divisions, each representing a major area of scholarly and professional concern, and discussion groups, which accommodate the scholarly and professional interests of constituencies within the association concerned with discrete literatures or with literary and linguistic concerns that are not encompassed by one of the divisions. To participate fully in the activities of the association, members should join the division(s) and discussion group(s) in which they have major scholarly or professional interests. Membership in divisions and discussion groups is maintained as part of the record of each MLA member and is intended to indicate an active involvement in the field of the division or discussion group and a desire to promote scholarly and teaching activity in that field. Membership in one division or discussion group does not exclude a member from attending any or all meetings arranged by other divisions or discussion groups at a convention or from participating in special sessions.
Overseas Mailing of the MLA NewsletterAll members receive a subscription to the MLA Newsletter, which is sent by periodicals-rate mail. The Newsletter is also available to all members online in a PDF format. The Spring issue is sent to members residing overseas by an airmail remail service. Overseas members who would still prefer to receive the Spring and Winter 2007 issues by airmail should add $6 to their payment
Tax Deductibility To comply with the United States Internal Revenue Code, the amount of dues paid in excess of $44 is tax deductible as a charitable contribution.
To comply with postal regulations governing second-class mail, the MLA calculates the cost of a Newsletter subscription at $8.00, which is included in membership dues.

Members will receive all issues of PMLA and the MLA Newsletter published in 2007 and the year-end issue of Profession. dues are determined by the Mla delegate assembly, subject to confirmation by the executive council.
MeMbeRShIp cateGoRIeSNew members, regardless of income, are entitled to a $35 annual dues rate in their first year of membership in the association. This introductory rate does not apply to those who have been MLA members at any time in the past and who are thus reinstating membership with this application.
Graduate students engaged in courses of study leading to degrees in the fields of modern languages and literatures may for a maximum of seven years become student members at a $20 annual dues rate.
Joint membership is open to two individuals sharing the same household. Joint members receive one subscription to PMLA and two subscriptions to the Newsletter and Profession. To determine the joint-membership dues payment, add $20 to the dues category of the member with the higher income. (Please attach a separate sheet to your application to provide Directory information and to order the Bibliography for the second member.) this category is not available to student members or first-year regular members.
Reinstating members whose memberships have lapsed for one calendar year or more should establish their dues category according to the graduated schedule.
Mla INteRNatIoNal bIblIoGRaphYThe MLA International Bibliography, the world’s leading annual bibliography of books and articles on the modern languages and liter-atures, linguistics, folklore, and other related topics, is published in electronic formats through libraries and annually in paperbound volumes. By subscribing to the bibliography, members pay only half of the postpublication prices of the paperbound volumes.
