Hey Division 8!
How have you all been? I hope you all have
been enjoying the summer! We only have one
month left until school starts again!
For the month of July, I have visited
Memphis, Tennessee to attend International
Convention. It was truly a memorable experience
and I sincerely hope that many more Key Clubbers
will be able to attend next year’s. I was able to fully

comprehend what Key Club truly was at the International level. For more
details, check the article “ICON Experience” and “Workshops at ICON” in
this newsletter. Furthermore, this whole newsletter will be emphasizing ICON
so that you can get a better understanding of what it’s all about.
My next divisional meeting will be on August 18, 2010 at Forest Hills
Library at 2:30 – 5:00 PM. (Don’t worry, the time also includes a Presidential
Council Meeting, so the divisional meeting won’t be that long.) I hope to see
you all there!
Remember presidents to enforce all your secretaries to keep filling out
those MRFs! They must be sent even during the summer, so keep it up! And
remember to help out all of our District Projects and our Governor’s Project!
Also, be sure to check out the new Kiwanis Worldwide Service Project called
“The ELIMINATE Project.” It’s a wonderful charity, and we can help reach
their goals in eliminating maternal and neonatal tetanus!
Yours in caring, service, and friendship,

Greetings from Lt. Governor By Lt. Governor Christina An
organization and contribute to everyone’s joyful stay. One of the
things I love about Key Club is how it brings people from all over
the world together through the “vehicle of service”. Meeting
members from all over the United States as well as from Aruba,
Jamaica, Germany and Australia was a unique experience. No
matter how much I love New York, I miss seeing all the new faces
and feeling the great spirit of everyone at the convention. I
attended ICON last year too and plan on going next year; it’s
definitely worth it. This newsletter focuses on what International
Convention was like. The great fun and learning experience
there will not only add to your skills as a Key Clubber but as a
general person as well. I hope that this issue will motivate you to
attend next year’s convention in Pheonix, Arizona. Hope to see
you there!
Governor’s Greeting
workshops range from interesting and fun topics to
more serious ones. However, all the ones that I’ve
attended were very helpful and, to my benefit, they
were really fun!
The first round of workshops gave us a wide
range of service project ideas that can help us plan
better events. The workshops gave us the
opportunity to learn about different organizations.
I attended the “March of Dimes: Become a
champion for babies!” workshop. As a committee
member of the International Projects Committee, I
wanted to focus on March of Dimes and learn how
much more we can help this charity.
The next round of workshops gave us time to
explore another great organization! I attended the
“Take part in the Kiwanis Worldwide Service
Project!” workshop. This workshop helped me to
understand what exactly this project was about, and
now I really want to advocate for this cause. To
learn more, you can read the article called “The
ELIMINATE Project” in this newsletter.
Other worthy causes that still need our help
and attention include UNICEF: Operation
Uruguay, Building Tomorrow, Operation Smile,
Children’s Miracle Network, and Friend a Gorilla.
Another round of workshops featured
Kiwanis-family programs to get us more connected.
There were also workshops to help the newly
elected district officers learn about their positions.
Some other workshops that were more laid
back were yoga, leadership (about B.B. King,
Martin Luther King Jr, and Elvis Presley), and
thinking positively and to keep your motivation.
After attending all of these workshops, I
realized how much more I can learn at ICON than
from just attending LTC. I highly encourage
everyone to get a taste of what ICON is like next
year! It’s worth it; I guarantee it!

Hey y’all!
After International Convention in
Memphis, Tennessee, I temporarily (and
against my will) adopted a southern accent;
do you like? The convention was absolutely
exciting and memorable. The New York
District was represented at workshops and
social events by forty Key Clubbers.
Celebrities such as Clay Aiken and the band
Relient K were there to support the

One very important District Project is “Doctors
without Borders”. “Doctors without Borders” is
an international organization that provides aid in
nearly 60 countries to people. This aid goes to
people in situations of armed conflict,
malnutrition, natural disasters and many other
different situations. Emergency medical care is
brought around the world to people caught in
crisis and helps assist people who are neglected by
health care systems.
As a member of Key Club there is
numerous of ways you can help “Doctors without
Borders”. Planning fundraisers such as a walk o
thon or even a bake sale to help raise money is
always a great idea! One great idea I found while
looking on the “Doctors without Borders” website
is to start a concert to raise money. This can
consist of a few Key Club members or even a
whole band! You can also receive a “Doctors
without Borders Action Kit” which is filled with
posters and more helpful material to help you
plan your event.
Of course you are not limited to these
suggestions but these will help you along your way
to helping out a great organization! “Doctors
without Borders” is interested in the projects you
do to help their organization and they want to
help you to make your event a success! I know as
Key Clubbers we are capable of changing so many
lives and supporting “Doctors without Borders” is
a great way to do this. Remember to visit their
website at www.doctorswithoutborders.org and
keep up the great work!
everyone is continuing service to their homes, schools, and
communities, throughout the summer an easy time to forget
about those in and around our communities that may need
help.
A very simple way to do this is by supporting this year's
Governor's Project, Keys to Education. While Key Clubbers
throughout the state have been busy racking up hours for the
project, there is still plenty more to be done and more
knowledge to be spread. Although the project's focus is on
education and, as Alice Cooper would say, school's out for
summer, there are still plenty of non school-associated ways to
share your club's intellect. For example, retirement homes,
more often than not, house elderly citizens with impaired
vision that miss the thrill of their favorite stories, or even their
local newspapers, and are yearning to be read to. Similarly,
most local libraries hold special reading times for their younger
visitors and are always in need of volunteers.
Other than that, your club can host a book drive, help
renovate your school's library while the kids are gone, or supply
the underprivileged with coloring books, or brain stimulating
games such as Sudoku or Crossword Puzzles. Any way your
club can think of to spread their knowledge will greatly help
this year's Governor's Project, and will be a fantastic help to
those in your school and community. Until next time,
continue helping out in your communities, know that your
time spent volunteering is much appreciated by all of those you
help, and, most importantly, enjoy the rest of summer.
Hello New York District Key
Clubbers! Can you believe that, in just
one short month, we will be back at
school? I hope everyone makes these
final weeks of summer some of the most
memorable times with friends and
family, and some of the most relaxing
for themselves. However, I also hope
This year the New York
District Board selected a total
of ten district projects for the
mighty New York District to
help support this year. These
projects range from St.
Jude Children’s Research
Hospital to Fisher House.

world. This past June, Kiwanis International
announced its new Worldwide Service Project to
eliminate Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus (MNT),
The Eliminate Project. MNT is caused when tetanus
spores, which exist in soil everywhere, come into
contact with open cuts during childbirth.
Studies show that this disease kills one baby
every nine minutes. What is so upsetting is that MNT
is highly preventable, and a vaccination costs only 60
cents per shot, but in 40 countries it still affects
mothers and children who have no access to health
care. Kiwanis, together with UNICEF, plan to
eliminate MNT from the earth by 2015 but they need
our help too. To eliminate this disease and stop the
physical and emotional suffering of it's victims
around the world it will take $110 million. So as Key
Clubbers, and therefore members of the Kiwanis
family, I implore you all to be leaders and take action.
Educate everyone in your homes, schools, and
communities of this project and our goals and
together we can eliminate MNT from the face of the
earth.

club and if you are in need of assistance the contacts
and committees are also listed in the Empire Key.
The next Empire Key will be published at the
end of September for many reasons. I want all Key
Club members to adjust to another school year before
getting back into Key Club mode. The next Empire Key
will have articles relating to recruitment, dues process,
public relations, and dates for DTCs and rallies. We
will also feature a different district and showcase
articles from New York district attendees at ICON.
I am also looking for Service Spotlights! Each time your
club finishes a project or events please write a short
summary about it! What did you do? Who did you
help? Would you recommend it to other clubs? Send
me a nice picture too! Your spotlights provide an
inspiration to other clubs as well as giving recognition
to your own. I hope to see some service spotlights soon!

wondering if any of you have checked
out the Committee section of the

INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION ‘10 Memphis, Tennessee
Experience at ICON ‘10 By Lt. Governor Christina An
Graceland, Elvis’s Mansion
Mississippi River
I’ve had such a great time at International Convention. If you
think you enjoy our District Leadership Training Conference, I have
news for you: International Convention is a hundred times better! First,
there are so many new faces from all over the world! It’s quite fun to
meet new people every day that you’re there. And the best part is that
everyone here is so sociable and fun to talk to. I loved exchanging pins
with people from other districts. I’ve tried to collect as many as I could,
and I’m happy with the ones that I have because they each bring back a
memory of the person that I’ve met at ICON. Some of the countries
that were represented this year were Germany, Australia, Barbados, and
Aruba!
Second, we get to travel outside! Since it was my first time at an
International Convention, I was surprised to learn that we were able to
go outside and eat anything that our hearts desired. Although it could
get expensive at times, I found that freedom pleasurable because I love
touring and taking pictures of all the new and exciting things I was
trying. I even rode on a trolley for the first time! It’s really different and
much slower than our typical subway in New York, but it was fun
nonetheless!
Third, there were famous celebrities such as Simon Curtis, Clay
Aiken, and Relient K who were here to support and entertain us. I
enjoyed the Relient K concert and I loved listening to the guest
speakers’ inspirational speeches. Everything here was just hundred
times better than what you can imagine and I’m glad that I was able to
experience all of this, but now I want more Key Clubbers to understand
and feel what I felt. Therefore, next year, I better see more of you at
International Convention! You’ll have a blast!

bathroom with balloons! We love
you Mr. Lowenberg!

CLUB SPOTLIGHT!

William Cullen Bryant Key Club
As some of you may know that our 2 little amigas – Carla (a.k.a –
nemo) and Walaa (a.k.a – Wallen) have gone to the soup kitchen. But
unfortunately, they couldn’t write this article because they only went there
twice whereas I have gone more than 4 times; hence I have more experience
and knowledge about this event. It is located in 33 East 12th Street, New
York, NY, 10003-4637. The Village Temple has been serving free meals to
the homeless and needy every Saturday since 1987. Some of their guests live
in the neighborhood, some come from other areas of the city and many join
in, on a regular basis. Volunteering starts at 9:30 a.m. and ends around
11:00am. We meet many different people from various schools and get to
socialize with them. Another fun thing about this event is that we ourselves
make food for them.
It’s a very exceptional and awesome experience because you know
that your creation, the meal you’ve preparing, is going to be eaten by
someone who’s in need of a meal and really appreciates it. The kinds of
foods we prepare are hot soup, sandwiches, fruit, hot/cold drinks and
desserts. Some of the volunteer cooks make the soup; others chop
vegetables, make sandwiches, organize desserts, cut bread, set-up tables and
pick up donated food from local restaurants, bakeries and stores. We get to
experience all of this even though the village temple has a very small budget.
They are able to provide because they get grants and contributions and have
food generously donated from local businesses weekly. They also receive
food from City Harvest and the Food Bank for New York. But nevertheless,
it’s extremely entertaining because this event gives you a mixture of
socializing with others and cooking. So if you enjoy doing these two then
please go to the kitchen and I assure you that you will have a blast.
