According to the United Nations the world population
is likely to reach 9.1 billion by 2050 and it is estimatedthat approximately 70% o humanity will be living in
cities by then. In these densely populated and expanding
urban areas eective exchange o inormation will be oparamount importance to the development o the social
and economic abric. Full-service broadband networksand other new Inormation and CommunicationTechnology (ICT) will be required to support bandwidth-
intensive voice, video, and data applications at ever
lower prices and ever higher levels o quality. Eventually, the rise o the new megacities will change the way
we live. Cities will unction as Knowledge Hubs in an
expanding Knowledge Network underlying virtually alleconomic and cultural activities.
The prevalent culture o tomorrows Networked Societywill be one o increased openness, transparency,
knowledge sharing and peer collaboration. This culturewill oster new capabilities in society to innovate and
organise, to create and produce high grade goodsand services, to govern and sustain. It will acilitate
continuous transormation and produce higher eciencyand richer experiences. Tomorrows networked cities
will be challenged to provide solutions that help makethe world more sustainable. Hence, they are bound to be
major sources o global innovation.
As the culture o openness, networking and knowledgesharing is taking shape and the technological restraints
disappear, we will see the gradual ormation o a new
more connected society which has a much lighterootprint on our ragile planet than humanity has today.

02the rurbanrevolution
City dwellers are rejecting the impersonal scale o
globalisation and corporations, and reconnecting withtheir communities. They are living locally, growing their
own ood and embracing small-scale, micro-brands. Theyare making their urban lives eel as rural as possible. This
is why we call these pioneers Rurban Revolutionaries.
Turning urban blocks into villages with a rural eel,
these Rurban Revolutionaries are redeining the lookand eel o community, culture, and consumption.
Their Rurban Revolution looks like the Swedish mobile
phone app that points users in the direction o thenearest arm shop, or like Arthur Potts-Dawsons newco-operative corner shop, the Peoples Supermarket.
It tastes o honey rom Eagle Street Rootop Farmsrootop beehive and the herbs Christopher Nyerges fnds
oraging in Los Angeles.
Governments, brands and innovators around the world
are working on ways to make greener, less wasteul, moresel-sucient cities, which oten grow their own ood.
The Chinese government has commissioned architect
William McDonough, ounder o the cradle-to-cradle (C2C)theory, to develop six new C2C city districts. In one project,
near the city o Liuzhou, in the southern Guangxi province,
McDonoughs proposal eatures rootop arms and
wastewater systems that convert sewage into ertiliser.
In Chicago, the Plant project launched this summer toraise unds to create the citys rst vertical arm. In West
Yorkshire, the Incredible Edible Todmorden project hasturned public spaces such as a railway station car parkand a retirement homes lawn into vegetable beds, herb
gardens and orchards. In London, the Capital Growth
campaign aimed to create 2,012 new ood-growing spacesin the city by the end o 2012.
While Rurbanites
arefocusing on making
their own homes and
neighbourhoods morelivable, sustainable,
sel-sucient and
human, the way they
are re-engineering
their cities is partly
in response to global
issues.

The increasing number o households will cause housingin towns to become dense. According to analysts,
societies all over the world will increasingly leantowards the Japanese way o living. With this statement,
they reer both to the density o accommodation in Tokyo,
as well as the style o communal living amiliar to the city.
The idea o shared communal space is a very appealing, almost romantic one. People are indeed interested in
ways o bringing landscape into the city. And there areeectively more and more examples o shared communal
spaces that are working.
Beyond communal living, local swapping will come back
into vogue. The Rurban ocus on community meansRurbanites preer to share and swap with each other. This brings people together and cuts down on resources.
Oten, online social networks help to drive oline
contact. Car clubs such as Greenwheels and ConnectCar
in the Netherlands and Flexicar in Australia have provedthat city drivers are happy to share rather than own a car.
In Portland, Oregon, Bright Neighbor is a virtual home
or the citys real-lie communities. On this secure site, local residents can nd and oer rides, share skills and
goods, organise events, and host and promote classesand groups.
On San Diegos Crop Swapper websites, network
members arrange to exchange resh homegrownvegetables, ruits, herbs and lowers. On LAs
NeighborGoods, they rent, borrow, lend and trade itemsthey own, such as a lawn mower or tennis racket. The
environmental and inancial beneits o sharing areobvious. It brings people together. By sharing things,
people can regain the sense o local community they
seem to have lost.

cities
More than hal to three quarters o the buildings weknow today, will still be in use in 2050. Consequently,
rich and developed countries will have to envisage asystematic retroit o their existing constructions to
reduce their carbon ootprint.
In less densely populated urban areas, such as the
suburbs o many American cities, a irst step inretroftting would be to put very high density mixed-usedevelopments into new public transport node points. This would revitalise the neighbourhood and create new
services without altering the ace o the suburb itsel. Aninrastructure network o new walking and cycle routes,
together with reashioned streets, renewable energycapture, and car clubs are bound to reduce car use.
As a result o these developments some suburbs maybecome increasingly populated, while others may be
abandoned and restored to agriculture. Urban planners
are aware o these eects a nd have begun incorporatingintensive ood production in cities. For example, inWanzhang eco-city, in an area o China with huge water
shortages, urban designers propose an integrated urban
agriculture and ood system replacing extensive wheatand corn cropping with labour intensive vegetable and
ruit cropping. The strategy delivers 100% ood securityor the new community and signicantly reduces water
consumption, as well as doubling arming income andincreasing agriculture jobs by 50%.
Sapa Building System is concentrating its R&D and Marketing to ully meet the challenges o the uture. When itcomes to retrotting existing buildings with energy ecient solutions, our wide range o products have a proven
history o success. The Elegance 72 curtain walling system is especially suitable or rejuvenating and upgradingexisting constructions.
In the race towards passive energy buildings Sapa Building System provides energy solutions integrating photovoltaic
generation into aluminium aades. This results in low cost, sustainable power and the opportunity to combine clean
energy, innovative building design with cutting edge thermal insulation solutions and the exact conguration osolar shading needed to achieve the perect balance on each individual building.
With Sapa Building System you have a dedicated partner that listens to your specifc needs and aims to provide theoptimised solution or your construction project, new build as well as renovation. Sapa Building System teams will
accompany you all along the construction or redevelopment project.

My rst impressions o Sapa products are associated to observing an aluminium-based fower containersolution at the Sapas Shape magazine when I was sketching the plans or Maia city main square development.
The idea o reliable good quality o metallurgic products associated to Swedish industrial products soon
came to my mind. Hasselblad cameras or Volvo cars are a good example o that. Now I know that Sapa alsomatches these quality standards.
So when I was invited by Sapa Building System to design a lean, e cient, aordable sliding window solution
[Slimslide], to compete against other European top-branded products, I was keen to accept the challengebecause I ound that using the strength properties o materials like glass and aluminium, I could create a
clean, light solution or windows and doors, maximizing the light openings through the high rigidity o glazing
allied to the high resistant minimalist structural rames in aluminium.
I ound a great empathy and fexibility rom Sapa Portugal team to assist and support me in the conception
and development o solutions with the willingness and patience to make the necessary adjustments in shapes
and hardware congurations. The result was very satisactory so recently we had the chance o repeatingthe experience with enhanced solutions based on thermally broken proles [Slimslide TB and Slimcase].
The building systems industry is continually subject to new technical and aesthetical requests rom
contemporary architecture, aiming at improved creative and ecient solutions so opportunities or newdevelopments on windows, doors and aades are endless. I know that Sapa has great products and holds the
potential and seeks or the development o innovative products. Hence I can envisage the need or curtain
walling solutions where the windows and doors, solar shading, ventilation, energy conservation and other
solutions can be ully integrated. And we can and should do i t because that is the FUTURE.
