Sam Few hits his way to IPS Homerun Derby at Chase FieldHomeruns for a Cause
ItallstartedwhenSamFew,anAquinassenior,waswatchingtheMLBdraftandsawBryceHarperonYouTube.Uponit’sreleaseoneofthevideoswentviral,gettingover2millionviews.ThevideobecamesuchahitthatESPNdidaspecialonthevideo.Inthevideo,Brycehita502foothomerunatTropicanaField,homeoftheTampaBayRays.AsSamwatchedthisimpressivevideo,hewantedtolearnmoreabouttheeventandhowhemightbeabletoattend.Afterlookingaround,hefoundthattheeventwascalledIPS(InternationalPowerShowcase)HomerunDerby.Theylookforthetop70powerhittersintheworldandhavethemshowofftheirtalentseachyear.
Inordertoattend,Samhadtosendinstatsandfilmfromgames.FolksfromIPSscametowatchSamoverthesummer.Afterhavingastrongseasonlastyear:hitting.557,19doubles(5thAllTimeinGeorgia
HighSchoolHistory)and12homeruns,SamwasawardedMVPOffensivePlayerandmadethe20101stTeamAllArea(Ga/Sc).SamwouldhelpleadAquinastooneoftheirbestseasonsonre-cordin2010.Aftersubmittingallofhismaterialandwaiting,SamreceivedhisinvitationinDecem-bertojoinintheIPSHomerunDerby.“Iwaspumpedupaboutthat–thatImadethetop70andgottorepresentGeorgia,”saysSam.
Inthefall,hereceivedwordthatMake-A-WishFoundationwassponsoringtheIPSHome-runDerby,withaprogramcalledHomerunsThatHelp.Inthisprogram,eachIPSparticipantismatchedwithalocalkidthatisdealingwithalifethreatingmedicalcondition.Thefirsthomerunballtheparticipanthitswillbesignedandgiventothepartneringchild.ThechildisalsomentionedattheIPSeventwhentheparticipantisintroducedandcanwatchtheeventlive.Thefoundationalsomakesadonationof$50foreachhomerunhit.WhenSamlearnedofthisprogram,heknewthathis4yearoldneighbor,MatthewSchafer,shouldbehispartner.“YouknowhemayneverbeabletohitabaseballsoIwasjustexcitedtobeabletorepresenthimwithmytalents”Samex-plains,adding“myfirsthomerunwas430feetsoIgottosignit[baseball]andgiveittohim,aboutwhich,hewasprettyexcited.”
The5thAnnualIPSHomerunDerbywasheldDecember28-30,2010atChaseField,homeoftheArizonaDiamondbacksinPhoenix,Arizona.Samperformedwell,placing15outof70play-ers.Samhitthe5thlongesthomerunwitha462footshotoverthewall.“Ihitthe5thlongesthomerunat462feetandIabso-lutelycrushedaballthathitrightbelowtherestaurantinleftfield”Samsayswithpride.Hedidmentionthathefeltthathecouldhavedonebetterbut,allthewhileshowinghisexcitementaboutbeingabletoparticipateinsuchanevent.“Itwasagreatexperi-ence.”
SamisexcitedaboutthiscomingseasonforAquinas.“Lastyearwedefinitelyprovedtopeoplethatweshouldbearespectedteamandwejustneedtocontinuethat”Samsaid.WhenaskedabouttheIrishcontinuingit’sstrongperformancefromlastyearhesays“thisyearwejustgottokeepthatrespectaround,tokeep
fightingandshowingeverybodythatwewerenotjustsomeCinderellastorylastyear.”HefeelsverypositiveabouttheIrishreturningtotheStateChampionshipgame.“Thereisnodoubtthatwecandoit,wehaveexperienceandweknowwhattodo”Samsayswithconfidence.WithapowerhitterlikeSam,thatshouldnotbeaproblem.

ManypeoplemakeresolutionstoloseweightorgetfitintheNewYear.Whilethismaybeagreatgoalitisimportanttohaveapositivebodyim-age.Havingapositivebodyimagedoesnotmeannotwantingtomakechangestohis/herbodybutunderstandingself-worthisnotdeterminedbyanumberonascale.Individualswhohavenegativebodyimageissuesoftenobsessoverlooksandbodyshape.Obsessionoverandconstantlycri-tiquingyourbodyisnothealthyandcanleadtomanydisordersandnegativebehaviors,including:depression,anorexia,bulimia,suicidalthoughtsanddrug/alcoholabuse.
Poorbodyimagecanaffectanyone.Thosewhosufferfromthisdisordercanbetoldamilliontimeshowgoodtheylookbutnomatterhowmanytimestheyhearit,theydon’tseewhateveryoneelsedoes.Theseindividualswillfindthesmallestflawsandobsessoverthemdisruptingtheirdailylife.
Certainthingscanbedonetohelpimprovebodyimageandassociatedfeelings,suchaswearclothesthatarecomfort-able;avoidtearingyourselfdownandfindthethingsaboutyourbodyyoudoliketofocuson.Focusingonthegoodwillnotonlyincreaseyourbodyimagebutwillincreasequalityoflife.

Aikenhasbeenonateareversincetheseasonbegan.FirsttheyknockoffGrovetownina65–45win.TheythensoundlydefeatedStromThurmond,DutchFork,Grovetown(again)andSpringValley.AsolidwinoverWoodmont(75-53)inthechampionshipgameoftheMcDonald’sShootoutinHartCountyprovedthatAikenwasforrealthisseason.Aikenwouldcontinuetheirwinningstreakthroughmid-JanuarywithabuzzerbeateragainstSpringValleyandawinoverWhiteKnoll.ThevictorieswouldcontinueuntiltheironlystumbleagainstLexingtononJanuary14.The60-65lossagainsttheLexingtonWildcatswasaheartbreakerbutseemedtodrivetheHornetstodigdeeper.AikenrecoveredquicklywithdecisivewinsoverNorthAugusta,SouthAikenandOrange-Wilkin-son.
Intheir2ndseasongameagainstWhiteKnolltheHornetsstartedthegameoffstrongwithacomfortable15-5lead.30intothe2ndperiod.TheWhiteKnollTimberwolveswouldscore5pointsinthenextminutetobringthegameto10-15.TheHornetswouldbeabletokeeptheirdistancegoingintothehalfwitha28-18lead.However,the3rdperiodwouldprovetobeatoughonefortheHornets.Aiken’sexplosiveoffenseseemedtostallout,leavingalotofpointsbythebasket.ThiswaspartlyduetothefactthatDeonHicksgotintofoultroubleearlyon.TheHornets’defensiveplaywassteppedupandtheTimberwolvesclosedwithin1pointwith4:43leftinthe4th.ThatiswhentheHornetsturneditup.Afteracritical3pointerbyJamarisColeman,theHornetsneverlookedback.“Downthestretchmykidsmadetheplayswhentheyhadtheopportuni-ties”CoachTonyHarrellsaidproudlyafterthegame.

Westsidehashadawrestlingprogramsince1997.ThecoachforWestside,CoachKevinWaters,hasbeenabletotransformthisyoungprogramintooneofthebestintheareainashortperiodoftime.Hehasdonethisthroughactivelyseek-ingoutstudentsintheschoolandconvincingthemthattheyshouldgivewrestlingahardlook.Thistactichasworkedinhisfavor,allowinghimtobuilduptheprogram.LastyearwasthefirstyearthatWestsidehadafullteamwithall14weightclasses.Strugglingtofilleachweightclassisnotuncommon.Infact,manyprogramsintheareadonothavefullteams.Withhishardwork,CoachWaterswasabletobuildasolidteamandhasbeenabledevelopgreatwrestlersintheprocess.
JaylenRhoneyandTreRhodesaretwoWestsidewrestlerswhohavenotonlygainedtheprideoftheschool,buthavealsoimpressedtheoverallwrestlingcommunity.Thetwo,whoarealsobestfriends,haveapositiveimpactoneachotherandtheprogramingeneral.Theybothhaveanupbeatattitudeandtheyarealwayscuttingup.However,whenitcomestotakingthemat,theyareasseriousasanyotherwrestlerinthegymandskilledatwhattheydo.
JaylenRhoney,ajunioratWestside,gotstartedinhisfreshmenyearandisinhis3rdyearofwrestling.Whenaskedhowhegothisstarthesaid“IwasgoingtojointheswimteambutwhenCoachWaterssawmeplayfootballhejustencouragedmetowrestle,soIdidandIreallylikedit.”Jaylensaysthatwhenhestartedwrestlinghelearnedalotfromthejuniorsandseniorsontheteam.Nowheisoneofthemostexperiencedwrestlersontheteam.Whenaskedabouthisstrengthinwrestling,Jaylensaysthatitis“mytoughness,ithasgottenmethroughalotofthings.”TreRhodes,alsoajunior,startedwrestlinghissophomoreyear.AfterwatchingJaylenwrestleTresaysthathereallywantedtojointheteam.Trehasbeenencouragedthroughtheyearsby“coachmakingmeworkharder,drivingmetobeatschoolrecordsandhavedetermination.”Headdsthathehasalwaysbeenstrongbuthiswrestlinghasimprovedbyfocusingontechnique.AwrestlingcampheattendedinColumbiaCountyreallyhelpedhim.HewillbeabletopaythatforwardwhenWestsideholdsayouthcampoftheirowninJune.Byhelpingintheyouthcamp,CoachWatershopesthathisguyswilllearnthroughteachingwrestlingtoothers.
CoachWatersisveryproudofhowTreandJaylenhaveperformed.“Whenitistimetodowhattheyhavetodo,theydoitwell”CoachWatersproudlysaid.Thetwohavedefinitelyhadanimpactontheirteam.Westsidehasfinished2ndintheregionthelasttwoyears,missingthechampionshiplastyearby1point.TheyhaveimprovedoverthelastseveralyearsinseveralareasbutCoachWaterssaysthatthewholeteamismuchstrongerthisyear,whichshouldgivethemagoodshotatwinningthisyear.TreandJaylenareabigpiecetothatpuzzle.TheyhavebothputupreallysolidrecordswithJaylencurrentlyat27-2andTreat31-2.
TreandJaylenbothsaythatwrestlinghashadabigimpactonthem.Beforehighschool,wrestlingwasprobablynotonthemindofeitheroneoftheseyoungmen,butnowwrestlinghasbecomeawayoflife.Thesporthasalsohadabigimpactonteachingthemtheimportanceofworkanddetermination.Jaylenexplainsitbysaying“whenIamatmyfullestpotentialIcanbegoodatanythingIdo.”Jaylenhasalsolearnedtobealeaderontheteam.ThesamecanbesaidforTre.“Whenyou’rerealinanysport,youcangofar”Tresayswithasmileonhisface.Thereisnodoubtthatbothoftheseguysare“real”goodattheirsport.ThroughhardworkanddedicationtheyhavehelpedtobringWestsidewrestlingtoanewprominentplaceintheirregion.Theyaredefinitelyaforcetobereckonedwith.

Attheclickoftheswitch,thecountdownbeginsandCoachTravisMcRaetellshisyoungdeterminedathletestorun!
Comingoffthe2009-10seasonwitharecordof20-8andadvancingtotheElite8,theSpartanslostnineseniorsonlastyear’steam.Withtheirstandingsnotasgoodaslastyear,theteamisinarebuildingstageac-cordingtoMcRaeandbeingledbyplayersRonMyersandLeroyGra-ham.
Grahamaverages14pointsand7reboundsandMyers12pointsand6assistpergame.
“Ronisasenior,he’sbeenstartingvarsityformesincea10th-grader,”McRaesaid.“Hebringsalotofleadership,courtawarenessandevery-thingthatyouwouldwantinapointguard.”
Myers,a5-foot-8,155poundguardstartedplayingbasketballattheageof5yearsoldandhasshoweddoubtersthathecancompetewiththebestofplayers.
SomemayseeMyersassmallinstatue,butheletsthetalkingmotivatehimtogetbetteranddowhateverittakestowin.
“Ipracticebeingaleader,showingbyexamples,”Myerssaid.“Idon’treallytalkmuchbutIjustshowbyexample.”
Myer’smother,Danna,andbrotherhasbeenabiginfluenceinhislifeandheisverygratefulthathismomgothimstartedinsportsearly.Myeralsorecallsthedayswhenhewouldgobyhiscousinsandplaybasketballfromearlymorning,untilhismotherwouldcallhimhomeafterthestreetlightscameon.
ThemightymouseofGlennHillsbasketballteamisundecidedinwhatcollegehewillplayforbutstatesthatbasketballhassetagoodfutureforhimandmadehimbecomeabetterpersoninlife.
Asonedrillstops,anotherbeginsandGrahamisnextinline.Hepassestheballtothepersoninfrontandinreturntheotherpersonpassestosomeoneoneelse,whileGrahamcutsbaseline.AsGrahamjetsgetreadytoliftofftherunway,herisesup,theballispassedtohimandashefloatsintheairsideways,hethrowsdownatwo-handdunk.
Thetall6-foot-3and175poundjuniorforward,whotransferredfromRichmondAcademy,didn’thavethedrivetoplayballashedoesnow.AtonepointtheathleticGrahamthoughtaboutgivingitup,butthencamethetransfer.
“IwasalwaysdownatRichmondandIthoughtsinceIwasn’tgettinganyplayingtime,IthoughtIwasn’tagoodplayer,”Grahamsaid.“MaybeIdon’treallyhavewhatittakes.”
TheopportunitysurelycameknockingwhenGrahamdecidedtoswitchschools.Grahamstatesthatitisn’tarivalrybetweenhimandRichmondbutonlyachancetodosomethingthathehasregainedlovefor,playingball.
ThispastyearGrahamwowedthecrowdwithaglimpseofwhathecoulddobywinningthedunkcontestatthe“100BlackMenThanksgivingClas-sic”inNovember.Whenaskedaboutthecompetition,hehumblysmiledandstatedthathejustjumpedoverhiscousin’sandbrother’sheadsandthelastdunkwasatwohandwindmill.
Grahamwasalatebloomerwhenhestartedplayingbasketballattheageof13-years-oldbutnowasajunior,hehasburstontothesceneasoneoftheCSRA’skeyplayersandhopestoplayballatClemsonUniversity.
“Byfar,CoachMcRaehasbeenoneofthebestcoachesIeverhad,”Gra-hamsaid.“Heactuallysawsomethinginmeandgavemeachance.”

Westside’sD’AndreSmalleyhashaditinthebackofhismindthroughouthighschool.Itissomethingthathasbeenahugepartofhislifeandispartofsomeofthethingsthatheisthemostproudof.However,ithasalsopresentedhimwithmanychallengesandobstaclestoovercome.
RunninghasalwaysbeenofD’Andre’slife.Hisearliestmemoryofrunningisinthe1stgradewhenheranforhiselementaryschool.HecontinuedhisrunningatTutMiddleSchoolandfoundthenthathehadarealtalentforit.ComingintohisfreshmenyearD’AndreenteredintotheStateMeetandplaced6thinthe2mile.HecontinuedtopracticeandconditionhimselfandwasabletogobacktoStatehisjunioryear.Itwasatthiseventthathisbeliefinhimselfandhisabilitiesbecameapparenttoallaroundhim.HepushedhimselfattheStateMeettoa1stplacefinishinthe2mile(16:24)and4thinthe1mile.Hisimpressiveperformancecertainlyhadeveryonetalking.D’Andrewasveryproudtoo.NowhecouldsaythathewasthebestinGeorgiainthe2mile.
D’Andrehasworkedhardtogettothispoint.Herunseverychancehecanget.“ItrainhardatpracticeandthenrunwhenIgethomeonmostdaysoftheweek”heexplains.Hehasnotbeenabletobethissuccessfulonhisown.Hehasalotofsupportaroundhim.Dr.DebbieAlexander,theWest-sidePrincipal,hasonseveraloccasionsvoicedherprideinD’Andre’saccomplishments.Hehasalsoreceivedsupportfromhisfamilyandfriendsofthefamily.SeveralpeoplethatknowhismotherandauntalsoshareprideinD’Andre’saccomplishments.Hehasalsolearnedalotaboutrunning.Hehaslearnedtorunsmarter,saying“inmiddleschoolIwouldalwaystrytobreakoutthefirstlapbutmycoachtaughtmetoconserveenergysoIcouldhaveabigpushattheend.”Headdsthatwhathehasreallylearnedisthat“ifyouwantsomethingthenyouhavetoworkforit.”D’Andrehasrunninginhisbloodandrunninghascertainlyhaditsrewards.D’Andrewillcontinuerunningatthecollegelevelandwewishhimallofthebest.

Thisyearhasseenseverallocalbasketballteamsperformverywell.OneofthemostimpressiveteamsoutthereistheLaneyWildcats.TheWildcatsarecurrentlyundefeatedwitha20-0record.Laneyhasatraditionofgreatbasketball,butthisyearseemsdifferent.
Someofthekeyingredientstoanygoodteamareagoodheadcoachandasolidsupportingstaff.CoachJerryHunterdefinitelybringsthattotheLaneyprogram.CoachHunterhasalsosurroundedhimselfwithaverytalentedgroupofmenonhisstaff.Justwatchingtheminac-tionisimpressive.Theyareverytechnicalanddriven,andtheyexpectalotoutoftheirteam.Mostimportantly,CoachHunterisalsosurround-edbyagreatgroupofyoungmenwhoproudlyweartheLaneyjersey.
ThistalentedWildcatteamhasmanybrilliantplay-ersbutthemostdynamicofallofthemwouldhavetobeRodHall(#1,SG/PG).Rodhasbasketballinhisblood.Hestatesthathereallycan’trememberwhenhestartedtoplaybecausehehasplayedsolong.AsRodputit,“IhavebeenplayingsinceIwas1becausemydadboughtmeaballmyfirstChristmasandIhavebeenplayingeversincethen.”Hespentalotoftimeplayingashegrewup.HewassotalentedthathewouldalwayshavetoplayupanagegroupincampsandingamesattheBoysandGirlsClub.HealsoplayedAAUwithTeamTruebasedoutofAugusta.Whenhetrans-ferredintoLaneyhehadtoholdoutplayinghisfreshmenyearonvarsitysohemadethebestofitonJV.Rodcamebackstrongerthaneverhissophomoreyear.HisperformanceandleadershipduringvarsitytryoutswassoremarkablethathewasnamedCaptainhissophomoreyear.AsheadvancedthoughhissophomoreyearandJunioryearhecontinuedtoimprovehisstrengthandskills.Heattributesalotofgrowthtoalwaysplayingoldergroupsasakid.Rodhasalwayschallengedhimself.Thishasmadehimintotheextraordinaryplayerthatheistoday.

AugustaPrephashadmanyreasonstobeexcitedabouttheirswimteaminthelastseveralyears.TheteamhasasolidgroupofkidsandagreatcoachinMaryEllynVirgo,previousswimmerforClemsonUniversity.TheyalsohaveoneofthebestswimmerstocomethroughAugusta,Georgia.GabeEichel,AugustaPrep’stopswimmer,recentlyattendedUSASwimmingNationalSelectCampattheU.S.OlympicTrainingCenterinColoradoSprings,Colorado.
Therearealotofgreatathletesonthisteam.EdwardDennisisareallyhardworkerandafantastickidwhoisreallyateamplayer.CoachVirgosaidthatwhensheaskedwhateventhewantedtoswimhesaid“whateverisbestfortheteam.”JohnEarwoodisanotherathletethatCoachVirgoisreallyexcitedabout.Heisin8thgradebutisswimminguponthevarsitytime.Hespecializesinthelongdistanceeventsandhasagreatchancetoplaceinthe500Free.TheircaptainisjuniorJackieYu,whoisagreatleaderaccordingtoVirgo.“Shehasbeenswimmingwiththeteamformanyyearsandsheisagreatleader,evenincludingtheyoungerkidsinthethingswedo.”RachelMuehlfeldistheirshortdistancespecialist.AttheStateMeetlastyearshewantedtobreaka28secondtimeinthe50free.Shewasabletoget27.9inherre-layeventbutnotintheindividual.“Shereallywantedtobreakthattimeandshehasbeenworkingreallyhardtogetthere”saysCoachVirgo.
