The Book of Common Prayer is Still a Big Deal!!
A book that rapidly moved to the top of my “must read” list is a book written by Alan Jacobs entitled The Book of Common Prayer…A Biography (published by Princeton University Press in 2014). While on vacation, I read (in Christianity Today) and interview with Professor Jacobs (who taught for more than 30 years at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois -the alma mater of Billy Graham). Jacobs is currently serving as the Distinguished Professor of Humanities at Baylor University in Waco, Texas (a university with deep roots in the Southern Baptist Convention). The interview with professor Jacobs piqued my interest in reading his book! As most of you know, I am not a “cradle Episcopalian”, having been baptized and ordained (in 1986) in the Lutheran Church in America (now, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America). I am always eager to increase my knowledge of the Book of Common Prayer, since my own formal seminary training did not include a serious analysis of the evolution, content and influence of this treasure of religious literature. The Book of Common Prayer is, without a doubt, one of the major works of English literature. Since its introduction in 1549 (nearly 500 years ago) the BCP has exerted enormous influence on the religious and literary lives of all who speak the English language The original book was a product of the English Reformation in the 16th century (following the English Church’s break with Rome). Like the King James Bible and the works of Shakespeare, many words and phrases from the Book of Common Prayer have entered the everyday language of English speaking people everywhere.. The Book of Common Prayer has had a great influence on a number of other Christian denominations (including the Methodist, Presbyterian, Lutheran and even Roman Catholic). John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist church and an Anglican priest wrote, "I believe there is no Liturgy in the world, either in ancient or modern language, which breathes more of a solid, scriptural, rational piety than the Common Prayer of the Church of England." What I found most interesting in the CTinterview was professor Jacobs conviction that Thomas Cranmer (former Archbishop of Canterbury and principle author of the 1549 BCP who was burned at the stake by Queen Mary in 1556 for his “Protestant “proclivities) was committed to the Reformation principle of “SOLA SCRIPTURA” and he wanted to insure that the people of England would be totally immersed in the written Word of God and in a language that they could read and understand. The lectionary for Morning and Evening Prayer and for the services of Holy Communion which were included in the 1549 prayer book provided for the “reliving” every church year of the whole “drama of salvation” starting with the Fall and culminating in the events of Holy Week and Easter. Professor Jacobs also points out that another of Cranmer’s objectives in writing the first BCP was uniformity in Christian worship throughout England. Cranmer felt it would be both religiously and politically advantageous if the English people could go into any church in the realm on any given day and experience the same worship service in the same words. For a long time this desire of Cranmer's was realized, not just in England, but throughout the English speaking world. I received an Amazon gift card from my grandchildren (Jacob, Chloe and Norah Franz) which I plan to use to purchase my own copy of Professor Jacob’s book. It is important that we who claim the Episcopal/Anglican faith tradition expand our knowledge and appreciation for the treasure we have in the Book of Common Prayer…one of the most distinctive characteristics of our rich and influential spiritual heritage. By the way, I noticed that the General Convention of the Episcopal Church, during its meeting in Salt Lake City this past July, directed the Standing Commission on Liturgy and Music to “prepare a plan for the comprehensive revision” of the 1979 Book of Common Prayer and to present it to the next General Convention (which will meet in Austin, Texas in July of 2018). . It sounds like liturgical change is on the way for Episcopalians in this country…stay tuned!!

Church History Display

The Food Pantry
The Food Pantry always needs tuna, canned fruit and
vegetables, macaroni & cheese, peanut butter, jelly and
juice. They are also in need of volunteers to help with the
Food Pantry on Tuesday evenings to give out food. They
are open on even dated Tuesdays each month from 6pm –
7pm.
OUTREACH
Thank you so much for your continued donations of clothing
for Camden. We can honestly tell you that they are ALL put
to good use! Please do not continue to donate summer
clothing at this time. We are now ready to begin collecting
clothing for the colder months! Camden does not have
enough storage to hold summer clothes until next year. If
you have any men’s shoes or clothing, in good condition,
that you would like to donate, we would be happy to
deliver them for you. Please place them in manageable
size BAGS only on our front porch and we will be sure that
they are delivered to men in Camden who truly do need
them. We live at: 223 Highland Terrace, Pitman, NJ.

The Good Shepherd Quilt Guild will be working
on our annual Stockings for Soldiers Project. As we collect
items to go inside these stockings in the fall (in the back of
the church), our quilters will be cutting stocking patterns
and sewing them together to make Christmas Stockings at
our September and October meetings.
We could use donations of yards of fabric in either
holiday fabric/colors or patriotic fabric/colors. If you go
shopping at any local fabric store, 2 to 3 yards will make
about 6-9 stockings. You can leave the fabric in bags at the
back of the church and I will collect them each weekend.
We always welcome new members to join us. Meetings
are the 3rd Wednesday of the month from 6:30-8 pm in the
Parish Hall.

Blessing of the Back Packs-
As a way of marking the beginning of a new school year,
and recognizing all of Good Shepherd’s students and
teachers, Fr. Dave will be doing a “Blessing of the Backpacks” at the conclusion of the Sunday morning liturgy
on Sunday, September 13th. Please make sure all the school
age children of the church bring their backpacks (or laptop
computers or IPads) to church for this important
opportunity to receive a blessing for the beginning of a
new school year.

OUR PRAY-ERS MINISTRY
Each Sunday during Communion time, our team of Pray-
ers offer prayers with our parishioners. We have now
expanded this meaningful ministry to our Saturday
evening, Holy Eucharist at 5:30pm.
After you receive Holy Communion, if you want/need
additional prayers, there will be a team of Pray-ers by the
Lady Altar who will be willing to offer prayers for you.
These prayers can be offered in Joy for a Blessing you have
received, or it can be to help ease a burden which lies on
your heart. Please take advantage of this wonderful
ministry of our parish.

Our income through July has caught up to our estimate for the seven months. Whether it is due to the new spring stewardship campaign or not, thank you for keeping your pledges current. The financial team is appreciative of your support during both a controversial and sometimes confusing process that is attempting to revise our approach to traditional stewardship giving.
Our expenses are in line with our estimates.
Please look for the special envelopes in the box of your pledge envelopes and include something in them no matter how small or large in addition to your normal contributions. All of those “extras” add up during the course of the year to help us meet our budget. Thank you for all of your support.
Update from the Good Shepherd Discernment Committee:
The Good Shepherd Discernment Committee has had a very busy summer! We began our telephone interviews just a few days after the electricity was restored in Pitman following the big June storm. Meeting two or three nights a week, the entire committee gathered around a speaker phone in the conference room as the interviews were conducted by Mark Nicolle and two other committee members using a set of questions developed by all of us. We listened quietly, for the most part!
We completed the telephone interviews in July, and moved to the next round: the initial face-to-face interviews. For this interview, each candidate began by meeting two committee members for dinner and a mini-tour of Pitman, the rectory, and our church. This was followed by a two hour conversation/interview with the entire committee, once again in our conference room. We moved out the tables and sat in a circle, if you are wondering how we all fit! Again we used questions contributed by the whole committee, and answered many questions from the candidates, with all of us participating actively in the interview.
These initial face-to-face interviews will be completed in August. We will move to the next phase in our discernment in September, when we will be sending teams of three committee members to visit and experience a Sunday worship service in the home parish setting of each of the remaining candidates.
We are very grateful for the group of wonderful priests who have been or continue to be in mutual discernment with us. We believe we are giving them a good idea of what Good Shepherd is all about. We are thankful for the trust and patience of the congregation and our families through this extensive process. We appreciate your understanding with regard to confidentiality. We truly feel blessed with your love, your prayers, and the the Holy Spirit at work in our discernment of God’s will. Please keep praying for our church, for us, for all the candidates, and for the next Rector of Good Shepherd!

It's that time of year again. The air is crisp, the leaves are falling and the CROP Walk is upon us. Sunday October 18th is the date. Hopefully you will mark your calendar and join us for either a 1 mile or 5 mile walk in an effort to curb hunger. If you are unable to walk and would like to contribute to someone who is walking or to the Good Shepherd team that would be greatly appreciated too. If you Google on your computer or phone Pitman-Glassboro CROP Hunger Walk you can donate on line to either an individual or the team. It's an easy and quick way to contribute. Of course you can also always give a walker a check or cash. Let's set a goal of $3,000.00 this year and 27 walkers. Thank you in advance for your participation. If you are willing to bake your favorite cookies they would be most appreciated. They are to be in sandwich bags of four each and it would be very helpful if you would let us know what they are. We are tentatively planning to hold our All Souls’ Day Service on Monday, Nov. 2nd at 7pm.
This is the special day that the church sets aside for us to remember those people who we have loved, those who have touched our lives in special ways, who are no longer with us. They live, now with our Lord.

Halloween
Open House-
The church will welcome
all Trick-or-Treaters who
stop by the church between 6:00 and 8:00pm on
Saturday, October 31st with a treat and some
information about the connection between
Halloween (the eve of All Saints Day…All
Hallows Eve) and the Christian Church. Fr.
Dave, Jack Daugherty and members of the
Confirmation class will be on hand to greet and
photograph the kids of all ages who stop by the
church. Please plan to include the church in
your Halloween planning this year!

Confirmation Ministry-
The formal preparation for the Rite of Confirmation (scheduled during Bishop Stoke’s “Visitation” on Sunday, December 20th) will be on Sunday, September 13th at 8:00am in the Parish Hall. We currently have nine young people who have committed to begin this journey (Paige Bathurst; Kaylee Braidwood; Elena and Griffin Clark; Tyler Froio; Brad Johnson; Michael Keser; Alex Manganello and Victoria Nelson). If there are other young people in the parish who are interested in preparing for the Rite of Confirmation but have not yet made a commitment to do so, they should speak with Fr. Dave asap. Assisting Fr. Dave in the instructional phase of the confirmation program are: Lori Bathurst; Mel Caron; Dcn. Naomi Cressman and Jack Daugherty. The weekend of October 17th &18th, the class will make a “road trip” to Washington, DC. The trip will include a visit to the Holocaust Museum and other sites in our nation’s capital. On Saturday afternoon, we will have a guided tour of the National Cathedral. The trip will conclude with the celebration of the Holy Eucharist at the Cathedral on Sunday morning. On Saturday, October 31st, the class will visit Saint Francis Inn (in Kennsington, PA) and volunteer in the soup kitchen ministry of the Inn. Please remember the Confirmation program and the nine young people who will be preparing for the Rite of Confirmation in your prayers throughout the fall!
Stewardship Update
Thank you to the parishioners who participated in the
Spring Stewardship Campaign. Our preliminary results are
encouraging. We received 50 responses, with a large
percentage of them increasing their 2016 pledge over their
2015 contribution.
Our annual pledges usually number around 100. Based
upon a number of survey responses, a preference for the
traditional Fall process still exists. Accordingly, our
Stewardship Committee will meet with our new Vestry
liaisons to consider a brief process for contacting our
members who may prefer this time frame for 2016
pledges.
Thank you to all who responded to the survey. Every
response has been read (anonymously) to the entire
Vestry. Surveys are still available. Your comments are
greatly valued and will be heard by the Vestry.

church. This will run until November 15th.
Our brave Troops in Afghanistan would love to receive
stockings for the holidays.
Our project sent over 10,000 last year. We want to continue to
let them know we are thinking of them while they are away
from home and their families. We need your help to fill them up
