CONGREGATION BETH SHOLOM MARCH 2018 ADAR/NISAN5778
It is with great sadness that we said
good-bye to our Betty Passman (here
with her 90th birthday balloon).
From the President
Congregation Beth Sholom Family,
I am sure that most of you know by now, that we were un-
successful in hiring Rabbi George Hirschfeld as our Spiritual
Leader. Your Board of Directors and I are very disappointed
that we were unable to complete our task. We thought that we
had finally found the right fit for our very special congregation,
but in the end Rabbi Hirschfeld decided that he would not able to
join our community. As a result, I immediately called an emergency board meeting for Friday,
February 9th to put the Search Committee back in place and we have begun again. I was told by
a very wise individual that, “the third time around is a charm.” I sincerely hope that this wise indi-
vidual knows something that none of us know. We are again going to attack this head on with full
force. Has anyone ever heard this quote before, “whenever a door is closed, G-d opens a win-
dow”. Giving us the opportunity to begin again. We will certainly keep everyone posted as our
search progresses for the ideal candidate.
I know that the last few months have been very hectic and frustrating, but we will get the job
done. We sincerely believe that. We will have leadership coverage for Shabbat. I have contacted
Rabbi Polirer, and he is willing to come to lead Saturday services twice per month. I have worked
out a temporary schedule for March and April, to start with, and we will continue to arrange two-
month schedules until we find the right fit for our very special congregation.
I have also contacted Jonathan Cohen and scheduled him for our high holiday services. He also
suggested that, schedule permitting, he could come up once a month to also do services for us.
Now, with that said, I think we have a very good plan to keep us going in the right direction until
the right candidate comes along.
We are going along as scheduled and trying not to have to cancel any events or activities. We
are also scheduling a Ritual Committee Meeting to discuss Friday evening services. With the help
of our Gabbais who do an excellent job and who we couldn’t do without, we will get the job done.
Please feel free to speak up and voice your opinions, concerns, or if you have any suggestions,
please don’t hesitate to call myself or one of the other board members. Always remember this,
YOU ARE ALL A VERY IMPORTANT PART OF THIS SYNAGOGUE, WE NEED AND WANT
YOUR INPUT. We can’t do this without YOU!!!
We will send out updates as
often as we can to keep you all
in the loop.
Thank you everyone for your
continued patience and sup-
port,
Sharon R. Weber
And entire Board of Directors

March is a month filled with spe-
cial days that have special reli-
gious or Jewish significance. Here
is a brief exploration of the many
such days. Each day includes any
readings and reference pages in
our Etz Hayim Chumash.
Purim
The 14th of Adar falls on Thurs-
day, March 1st; Reading: Megillah
Esther
Reading of the Megillah — Me-
gillah is Hebrew for scroll and this
Megillah contains the well-known
story of how Esther became
queen of Persia and foiled
Haman’s plot to destroy the Jews.
The Megillah can be read the
evening before, during morning
services or in the afternoon. At
CBS we will read the Megillah
during our S'udah on Wednesday
evening February 28th.
Shushan Purim
The 15th of Adar falls on Friday
March 2nd.
Shushan Purim — Both the 14th
and 15th of Adar, depending on
your location can be Shushan
Purim. Typically un-walled cities
have celebrated on the 14th and
walled cities, including Jerusalem,
celebrate on the 15th. The 14th is
the date of choice for Purim
throughout the US.
Shabbat
16th of Adar falls on Saturday
March 3rd. Shabbat Reading:
Parsha Ki Tissa (Exodos 31:18
– 33:11; Etz Hayim pages 529
– 538)
Shabbat Para
The 23rd of Adar falls on Sat-
urday March 10th with a dou-
ble Parsha reading: Parsha
Vayakhel and Parsha Pekudai
(Exodos 37:17 – 38:20; Etz
Hayim pages 560 – 563
[Vayakhel], Exodos 38:21 –
39:21; Etz Hayim pages 564 –
567 [Pekudei}, and Maftir
which is read from Numbers
19:1 – 19:22, Parsha Hukkat,
Etz Hayim pages 880 - 883)
Shabbat Para — We recog-
nize four special Shabbatot in
preparation for Passover. Dis-
tinct readings for Maftir are
selected for each of these four
Shabbatot, necessitating read-
ing from two separate Torah
scrolls. In February, we experi-
enced Shabbat Shekalim on
the 10th and Shabbat Zachor
on the 24th which is always on
the Shabbat preceding Purim.
The other two are Shabbat
Para and Shabbat HaCho-
desh. Shabbat Para occurs on
the Shabbat following Purim
and marks the beginning of
formal preparations for Passo-
ver. The special Maftir reading
(Numbers 19:1 – 22) is a dis-
cussion of the ritual purification
concerning the red heifer.
Shabbat HaChodesh
The 1st of Nisan falls on Satur-
day March 17th for Rosh Cho-
desh Nisan; Readings: Parsha
Va-Yikra (Leviticus 3:1 – 4:26;
Etz Hayim pages 592 – 599,
seventh Aliyah is Numbers
28:9 – 28:15, Parsha Pinchas,
Etz Hayim pages 930 - 931
and Maftir which is read from
Exodus 12:1 -12:20, Parsha
Bo, Etz Hayim pages 380-
385)
Shabbat HaChodesh —The
fourth of the four Parshiyot is
read on the last Shabbat be-
fore Nisan or, as is the situa-
tion this year, on Rosh Cho-
desh Nisan. It recognizes the
significance of the month of
Nisan to the Jewish people. It
is written in the Parsha that
“This month shall be the begin-
ning of the months,” and goes
on to explain the preparations
for Passover. As it is Rosh
Chodesh in addition to being
one of the four Parshiyot, we
read from three Torahs.
Shabbat HaGadol
The 8th of Nisan falls on
March 24th . Reading: Parsha
Tzav (Leviticus 7:11 – 7:38;
Etz Hayim pages 617– 621)
A DIFFERENT KIND OF MARCH MADNESS!
Shabbat HaGadol — The
Shabbat before Passover is
Shabbat HaGadol. Typically
there is a detailed sermon
about preparations for Passo-
ver.
Search for Leaven
The 13th of Nisan falls on
Thursday March 29th.
Leaven — About one hour
after sunset Jewish house-
holds initiate a search for any
hametz (leavened bread) that
may have escaped scrutiny.
This is to ensure that we can
comply with the Torah law that
forbids us to have any leaven
or leaving agent in our posses-
sion during Passover. The
hametz is searched for with a
candle and scooped up with a
feather and spoon. The
hametz found during the
search, together with all other
chametz is burned the next
morning (erev Pesach) before
a set time. In our community
and for this year (2018) the
hametz should be burned be-
fore 12:30 PM on Friday March
30.
After the burning we recite this
declaration: “All leaven or any-
thing leavened which is in my
possession, whether I have
seen it or not, whether I have
observed it or not, whether I
have removed it or not, shall
be considered nullified and
ownerless as the dust of the
earth.” Remember that the lat-
est hour in our area for 2018
for consuming any hametz is
11:28 AM on that day.
Siyum
The 14th of Nisan falls on Fri-
day March 30th; the morning
service includes a Siyum fol-
lowed by a festive meal
(schnapps and nosh) related to
the Fast of the first-born.
Siyum – This refers to the
completion of any Torah study.
Typically first born Jews stay
after the regular morning
(Shacharit) services and listen
to a Siyum and then share a
festive meal which relieves
their obligation to fast that day.
Jewish law treats that obliga-
tion to fast very leniently to the
extent that having heard the
Siyum and participated in the
meal they then may continue
to eat for the rest of the day. At
CBS we will have a brief morn-
ing service, Siyum and nosh
starting at 9:30 AM. This is a
chance to wear your Tefillin.
Passover
The 15th of Nisan falls on Sat-
urday March 31st with the First
day of Passover. The first Se-
der is held the night before
(Friday March 30th) and the
Second Seder is in the even-
ing of the first full day; the To-
rah reading during the morning
services is Exodus 12:21 –
12:51, Parsha Bo, Etz Hayim
pages 385 – 390 and Maftir is
Numbers 28:19 – 28:25, Par-
sha Pinchas, Etz Hayim page

Come join us for YOM HASHOAH REMEMBRANCE DAY,
Sunday, April 8th at 2:00 PM in Kellner Auditorium. We will watch The Number on Great-Grandpa’s Arm
According to The Forward: “A Holocaust Film appropriate for the Whole Family.”
I t is a simple conversation between a
90-year-old camp survivor, Srulek
Feldman, and his adoring 10-year-
old great-grandson, Elliott Saiontz,
about experiences Srulek had before and
during the war. It is heartwarming, intelli-
gent, and told in a way that evokes the
suffering without frightening its intended
family audience.
Feldman was born in Sosnowiec, Poland,
in what appears to be a financially comfortable, Shabbos-observant family. His father was a milliner who had his own store, and life
was good — until it wasn’t.
He was 14 years old when he and a group of friends were grabbed up and (although it’s not entirely clear) sent to a series of work
camps. He never saw his family again. Eventually he ended up in Auschwitz. After a forced march alongside fleeing German troops
on a Jewish Trail of Tears, he was liberated by Russian soldiers.
He returned to Sosnowiec after the war, but knew no one there; all friends and acquaintances were gone. He ended up in a Ger-
man DP camp, where he met his wife; the two ultimately emigrated to the United States, and Feldman, who now called himself
Jack, started a successful fish market.
The film has a number of really glorious elements. First, there is the obvious love that young Elliott has for Jack (and vice versa, of
course), which is especially noteworthy in a time when older people often are disrespected.
A second is the fascinating way the story is told. It’s not a lecture, but Jack answering Elliott’s intelligent questions. The youngster is
a real find, smart, inquisitive, and as much as a 10-year-old can be, a real history buff.
Another important and fortunate takeaway is how willingly Jack responds to Elliott’s questions. Many survivors buried memories
and were forever changed by them. Not Jack. He remembers all. He “knows what it means to be hungry,” says an African American
man in Feldman’s fish store. “If you’re hungry he will feed [you] whether you’ve got money or not.”
COME JOIN US FOR YOM HASHOAH REMEMBRANCE DAY, SUNDAY, APRIL 8TH AT 2:00 PM IN KELLNER AUDITORIUM.
We will have our exhibition “GI’s Remember”—it describes and includes photographs of the liberation of camps by Jewish soldiers.
There will also be some Holocaust literature to examine
We will again be selling yellow candles. In exchange for a donation of $5, we ask all attendees to take this special yellow yahrzeit
candle home and light it in memory of the Six Million. Proceeds will be donated to Yad Vashem.
From Hadassah
Dear Members and Friends of Hadassah,
T his Hadassah letter begins on two very sad notes.
David Bergman, husband of our Hadassah member Sharon Bergman, passed away. David was an au-thor, inventor, a holocaust survivor, a corny joke teller and my dear friend. Hadassah of Beverly
Hills sends our heartfelt condolences to Sharon and her family.
The second sad note is the passing of Betty Passman . When Betty celebrated her 90th birthday with Con-gregation Beth Sholom and her family last April I believed she would always be with us. Betty was the most dedicated Hadassah member and was very active in ensuring we had enough members. She donated gener-ously to Hadassah. In our preparation for the Card and Game party she insisted that delicious vegetarian meal be served and she made a generous donation for the food. Hadassah of Beverly Hills dedicated this year’s Game and Card party to Betty Passman. Betty did not have and easy life, losing both a son and her hus-band. She never complained about her lot in life. She was always happy with what she got, and loved to go to restaurants on Sunday with her neighbor. After her neighbor died, Betty was not bashful to ask Carole Delizia and me to take her out. She knew what was going on in Citrus County and the world reading The Jeru-salem Post and the Chronicle daily. Israel was especially precious to her. Betty and Leo lived in Israel for four years. Her great dream was to go there one last time. Before she married Leo, Betty was working as a secre-tary in the American delegation when the UN was situated in Lake Success, New York.
In 1947 she was present when the UN voted to establish a small country in the Middle East named Israel. Most of us at least the Jews living in Israel and the world were attached to the radios (NO TV on Shabbat) counting how many votes we received. Her devoted son Stephen and her grandchildren will miss her as will I.
Betty’s wish was to stay in her house to the end and she got her wish.
In her memory donations were made to Hadassah and many trees will be planted in Israel in her honor.

M’KHIRAT HAMETZ – SELLING OF HAMETZ
The Torah commands us to not possess any leavened products (hametz) during the entire week of Pesah. In or-
der to alleviate any financial hardship, our sages instituted a procedure whereby a person may sell his/her hametz
to a non-Jew prior to the beginning of the holiday and then purchase it back from that person when the holiday is
over (or receive the actual compensation for the hametz).
To streamline process, The Ritual Committee will act as your agent and sell all of our hametz together prior to the
holiday. For more information contact Harvey Hamerling or Les Leavitt.
