Goodfellows goals, history & the need GOALS
The Southfield Goodfellows is an all volunteer, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. The primary goalof the Southfield Goodfellows is to assure that no child in Southfield or Lathrup Village is forgotten during the Holiday Season. We also assist in meeting the food requirements of needy families and senior citizens in the community at this special time of year. Our secondary goal is to provide assistance to individuals year-round through our Urgent Needs
Program. This assistance for unforeseen hardship is conducted on a case-by-case basis, as long as fundsare available. The City of Southfield Human Services Department manages the program on behalf of theSouthfield Goodfellows.
HISTORYIn 1946, a handful of concerned citizens of Southfield Township recognized the need to assist a small
number of families for the Holiday Season. The group chose to pursue this mission by emulating the traditional Goodfellows program. Community, religious and service organizations, as well as companiesand local government, were each asked to commit two members to direct this effort. The response wasoverwhelming and the Southfield Goodfellows organization was born.Since those early beginnings, Southfield and Lathrup Village have become incorporated cities whose
needs have grown along with their population. We continue to expand our efforts year after year and tailor our program to meet the ever-changing needs of these communities.
THE NEEDRequests for assistance come from a range of ages, family units, and diverse cultures. Our clients
include many single-parent families, families headed by unemployed or physically impaired bread-winners, as well as senior citizens. The incomes of all our clients fall within the Federal poverty guideline as established by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
HOW WE SERVE THE COMMUNITYThe Southfield Goodfellows receive recommendations from social workers, school personnel,
religious institutions, police and fire departments, and concerned citizens to identify both families andindividuals in need in the Southfield and Lathrup Village communities. A case worker at the City ofSouthfield Human Services Department reviews these recommendations and arranges for the submissionof Request for Assistance forms to the Southfield Goodfellows in order to qualify applicants.Qualified applicants receive food boxes and food gift certificates. Families with children, enrolled in
high school and younger, also receive gifts and clothing gift cards for each child. This is accomplishedthrough fund raising events and donations of food and toys from schools, individuals, groups, and corporations. Purchases are made by funds raised through general solicitation to the community throughour newsletter mailing and newspaper sale. Packages are prepared at our distribution center for pickupby recipients in mid-December. Food boxes for senior citizens and those with special needs are delivered.

I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason,so it was not by chance that I came to be a part of theSouthfield Goodfellows. A few years ago, I found myselfflipping through the newspaper and an article read that volunteers were needed to assist in the distribution of
holiday packages and food. Being no stranger to volun-teerism, my teenage son and I jumped at the chance tohelp. From the moment we arrived, we felt welcomed andthat day ran like a well-oiled machine. We were soimpressed that we decided to become a part of the organization permanently; but more than that, it was theright thing to do. This organization has a special place in my heart and
when I shared my Southfield Goodfellows experienceswith family and friends, I learned that they, too, had affection for the organization. Close family membersshared fond memories of the Goodfellows saving many aChristmas, providing presents and food when there other-wise would be none. Each holiday season, I find myselfsurrounded by family and good tidings and I know I amblessed. This is my wish for everyone- a holiday spentwith the ones you love… a holiday without the fear ofhunger or poverty… a holiday with gifts and deliciousfood… a holiday of joy… a holiday that is care-free.I have lived and worked in the Southfield/Lathrup
Village communities for years. The people I’ve met overthe years (and even the ones I haven’t) are dear to me. I’mproud of the fact that I’m an active member of a group thathelps provide for some of those wonderful, beautiful people. Many members of our Goodfellows are also residents of Southfield, but several live many miles awayand drive from cities as far as an hour away to get hereand support our mission. It would be easier to stay athome; to concern ourselves only with the here and nowand to differentiate between our problems and “other people’s problems.” It would be easier to come home from
another hard day at the office, put our feet up, and spendthe rest of the evenings watching the newest sitcoms. Itwould also be easier (not to mention relaxing!) to sleep inon the weekends rather than pack and stack boxes, wrapgifts, etc... but the Southfield Goodfellows has never beenabout what’s easy. Here at the Southfield Goodfellows, wedo what we do because it is the right thing to do, and mostimportantly: It is truly our pleasure to serve.…Of course, it would be impossible to do what we do
without the support of our generous donors and countlessvolunteers. Local businesses and even private citizenssupply us with assistance for the food and the gifts we distribute to the families. On my very first Mother’s Day, my husband and two
month old son gave me a houseplant. I hung it in ourkitchen window so it could receive a healthy amount ofsunlight and I watered it twice a week. Once a month,I threw in a little plant food. Over time, it grew and grew tothe point that I had to trim it. The cuttings I gathered werethen placed in glasses of water to encourage them to takeroot. Later, I potted and placed them in two other rooms;they not only added to the decor, but also produced purerair to breathe. But as more time passed, I forgot to water them as
often as I used to. The leaves drooped and shriveled-up.I neglected to feed the plants each month, while the original plant no longer grew at its faster rate and thereforedid not require trimming. When I gave it care, it flourished. But when I neglected it, it withdrew. Our community operates in the same way. The economy has not been kindto most. Families have been forced to make difficult decisions in their day to day lives. Minor changes – suchas canceling the lawn service, going without cable, forgoing the air conditioner – fail to make a noticeabledent, and so some have been forced to make more dras-tic changes such as skipping meals, selling a car, or even
worse: losing their homes. We help our fellow man because we are all the same,
equal in our desire and our right to be secure in heart, body, and mind. I recall to the old adage, “Do unto othersas you have them do unto you.” Or to paraphrase: “Treatpeople right.” No matter what harsh realities life throws atus, we can be safe in the fact that we still have each other. When you give, you get back so much more in return.
It’s not just the good feeling you have, it’s the sense ofknowing that every seed you plant has the potential toblossom on its own. Help us to bless others, would you? Could we count on
your monetary support again to serve the less fortunate living in the cities of Southfield and Lathrup Village, whoneed our help? Through God’s grace and your generosity,we would be able to accomplish this daunting task of serving hundreds again this Holiday Season. Are you employed? Do you have a place you can call
home? Do you have clothes, especially, warm clothing inthe winter? Do you have enough food to eat? Do youhave a bed to sleep in each night? Did you wake up thismorning? If you can answer, “yes” to any of these questions then you are blessed whether you realize it ornot. Please be a blessing to others and share with themwhat you can this holiday season. A monetary gift of $50,$75, $100 or more would truly help our cause for others; however, no monetary gift is too small. Remember, trueabundance isn’t measured by what you have; rather, it ismeasured by what you give. Please make your check ormoney order payable to the Southfield Goodfellows andmail it to PO Box 2336, Southfield, MI 48037-2336. If youprefer to donate securely online, go to www.southfield-goodfellows.org. Thank you for caring. Be blessed andHappy Holidays! If you have any questions or need addi-tional information please call and leave a message on our24-hour voice mail at (248) 788-5899.
How You Can HelpThere are plenty of opportunities for the community to participate
in assisting the Southfield Goodfellows – you can:• Donate money to the Southfield Goodfellows for the purchaseof clothing gift cards for children and food gift cards for fam-ilies, to supplement the items donated and purchased.
• Sponsor a “Giving Tree” – the Goodfellows will provideyour organization with paper holiday ornament tags, eachlisting the first name, age and gender of a specific child inthe community, to purchase new items from a suggestedwish list.
• Sew, purchase, knit or crochet doll clothes – the SouthfieldGoodfellows purchase dolls which individuals and/or groupsthen dress for gifts.
Any one of these activities is a great way for either groups orindividuals to lend a helping hand. To help the SouthfieldGoodfellows in future efforts or for further information, contact:

The Pain You Don’t SeeBy Sydnee Thompson
Too many of us assume the worst of those that ask for public assistance, especially if we’ve never had to use those resources ourselves. The judgements are endless: “Can’t you just manage your money better? Stop buying junk food? Go back to schooland get your degree?”
The biggest question of all seems to be: “I did it…why can’t you?”
Each year, we receive dozens of applications from residents from all walks of life—all of them deserve our utmost compassion.
Here are just a few of the reasons recipients gave in 2015 for needing help during the holidays:
“Been in a very bad car accident. Unable to provide gifts for family this year.”
“[I’m a] single, disabled senior citizen with two adopted children. Fixed income, no money for gifts.”
“We’re working with a $625 or more deficit every month.”
“[I’m a] divorced single mom: pay cuts, house underwater, mortgage company denied refinance, house repair, car repair.”
“[I’m] under 90 days from being homeless. We only have one income as I am disabled and not yet receiving benefits.”According to the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly twenty percent of all Americans have a disability, with half of those identifyingthat disability as severe. In addition, 13.5 percent of Americans were living at or below the poverty line in 2015. Those strik-ing statistics suggest that there are many more people in our lives that are struggling than we may know, and many of thosepeople might be afraid to ask for the help they need when they are constantly bombarded by stigma.
Don’t judge; give. Not just during December, but all year-round.

The holidays are filled with family, friends, fun, and food. During this time of year, it’s easy to lose focus of good eating and exercise habits. Here are ways to stay on track during the holidays and beyond.
“Get It & Go Fitness” Tips by Celeste JohnsonWeight Loss is 70% Diet and 30% ExerciseYou can work out for 60 minutes each day, but if you have poor eating habits you will not lose weight. To lose weight, and be healthy, fit and confident, you should adopt good nutrition, cardio and strength training. Make a lifestyle change, not just a short-term commitment.Get Your Mind RightIf your mind is ready to achieve a goal, your body will follow.Set Mini GoalsYou are more likely to reach your weight loss goals, if your goals are realistic. A healthy rate of weight loss is 1 – 2 pounds per week. Instead of focus-ing on dropping 30 pounds in 4 months, set mini goals and focus on losing 4 – 8 pounds in 1 month.Understand CaloriesOne pound of fat is 3,500 calories. To lose weight, you have to create a calorie deficit. Let’s say your Recommended Daily Intake is 2,000 calories aday. If you eat 500 calories less per day, that adds up to 3,500 calories less in the entire week, which means one pound of weight loss! You can alsoburn calories from exercise too! If you burn more calories than you take in, you will lose weight. Eat Smart
• Eat 5 to 6 meals per day – Eat every 3 hours – Eat protein with every meal• Women: 125 to 150 grams of protein daily / Men: 175 to 200 grams of protein daily• Drink ½ your body weight in ounces of water per day (example: a 150 pound person should drink 75 ounces of water per day)• Eat complex or whole grain carbs the first 3 – 4 meals of the day• Replace complex or whole grain carbs with vegetables in the 5th and 6th meal of the day• Proteins: chicken, turkey, fish, lean beef, seafood, eggs, whey protein powder, greek yogurt• Complex & Whole Grain Carbs: oatmeal, brown rice, sweet potato, whole grain bread• Vegetables: spinach, broccoli, asparagus, lettuce, cucumber, squash, celery, onions, peppers• Fruits: strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, apples, oranges, melons, bananas, tomatoes• Fat: Raw nuts, avocado, olive oil
Calculate Your ‘Fat Burning’ Zone• Maximum Heart Rate = 220 - Age• Fitness Zone (Fat Burning) --- 60 - 70% of maximum heart rate. This zone has been shown to help decrease body fat, blood pressure and cholesterol. It also decreases the risk of degenerative diseases. The percent of fat calories is 85%.Example: If you are 40 years old, your lower level threshold would be 108 beats per minute ((220 – 40) x 0.60), and your upper level thresholdwould be 126 beats per minute ((220 – 40) x 0.70). This would make your fat burning zone 108 to 126 beats per minute.• My Fitness Pal is a great site to track calories, food and exercise. It has every food imaginable and a lot of exercises too. My Fitness Pal is also an app! It calculates how many calories you need to eat and how much you need to burn from exercise to reach your goal weight. It’s customizedto your height, age, gender and weight.
Include Cardio and Strength Training• Exercise at least 4 times a week for at least 30 minutes each time to lose weight. • Cardio exercise is what burns fat (anything that gets your heart rate up) and burns calories. • Effective cardio exercises are walking, running, biking, elliptical, dancing, swimming, kick-boxing, jump rope, jumping jacks, burpees, squat jumps, etc.• Effective strength training exercises are lifting weights, squats, lunges, back-rows, push-ups, shoulder presses, bicep curls, triceps extensions, calf raises, crunches, etc.• Strength training exercises burn less calories than cardio exercises, but they do build muscle. This is important because one pound of muscle takesup less space than one pound of fat, giving the illusion of even more weight loss! Plus muscle burns more calories than fat when you’re sitting still. • Those who exercise, burn more calories than those who don’t. Working out burns calories, which increases your standing metabolism and causes youto burn even more calories! • Remember, you cannot just do an exercise to ‘spot’ lose in one area of your body. You can tighten muscle groups in certain areas, but to lose fat youmust burn fat. Fat burns gradually over your entire body.

November 2, 2016 Dear Friends,
The Southfield Goodfellows is a non-profit 501©3 organization, whose mission is to ensure that no child or senior in our community is forgotten during the holiday season. The organization is comprised solely of volunteers. This diverse group of concerned citizens are committed to those in need.
For the past 70 plus years, the Southfield Goodfellows has distributed tons of food, clothing, gift cards, and toys to needy families. Recipients of these items are pre-screened by the City of Southfield Human Services Department. Last year, hundreds of families who had fallen on hard financial times experienced the true spirit of the holidays by receiving a helping hand.
The Southfield Goodfellows relies solely on donations in order to support these families. We would be honored if you would join us in helping make this holiday season joyful for those Southfield and Lathrup Village families in need! Any assistance you might provide toward the retention of food, clothing, gift cards, and toys is greatly appreciated.
We desperately need your support, as the donations have dramatically declined over the past several years. Please consider adopting a family(s) and purchase items for the children. Another option is to make a monetary donation and our volunteers will shop for the families. Donations can range from $10 to $10,000, as the need is so great. All donations are 100% tax deductible. Please make all donations payable to: The Southfield Goodfellows, P.O. Box 2336, Southfield, MI 48037.
For more information about corporate donations or to adopt a family, please call: 248-788-5899, email: [email protected], or visit our website: www.southfieldgoodfellows.org. Your support will help ensure our children and families have a happy and healthy holiday, but most of all, hope.

KEEPING THE FAITHBy Iris D. Thompson and Sydnee Thompson
Sometimes even the most faithful of people can stumble, or fall. I learned this firsthand this year, when theSouthfield Goodfellows began its search for a new warehouse space after five years of being housed in an emptysuite off of Eight Mile Road, which has now been leased.
For months we struggled to find a replacement, but as of October, nothing had materialized. All of us volunteerswere worried that we would have to cancel the event — the first cancellation of our Distribution Day in recentmemory.
The Southfield Goodfellows provides a vital resource to the residents of the cities of Southfield and LathrupVillage. Last year, we served a total of 1,061 recipients: 181 households with children and 232 households without children. We brought countless smiles to little faces and even more tears of relief and joy to anxious adults. The thought of having to announce to all of these people that the relief they had been counting on would fall short,or not come at all...it filled us with dread. Doubt began to creep in, and we started to seriously consider the possibility that we would not be able to provide gifts at all this year, or that much of our foodstuffs would have tobe replaced with gift cards.
But we continued to plan for the event — albeit slowly, tentatively — as we scrambled to find a replacement space.Surely, somehow, we would make this work. We threw around ideas: What about an empty elementary school? A church? Did we know anyone we could ask to help spread the word?
As a last-ditch effort, we sent out a press release to local media organizations, announcing our desperate need forassistance. But still I was worried that once the news got out that we still didn't have a building — only two monthsbefore Christmas — our applicants and donors would get skittish, and decide not to reach out to us. Or maybeworse still, that we wouldn't get a reply from the media at all.
In the midst of all the chaos of my personal, professional, and philanthropic lives, my faith had wavered. But lessthan three hours after sending those emails, we received our first phone call.
This year, we have Mara MacDonald and Jermont Terry of Local 4 News and Nick Prokop of Transwestern tothank for saving us in our hour of need. I was interviewed for the 11 o'clock news that same day, and within only24 hours of the segment airing, we had received multiple offers of warehouse space — in places as far away asTroy and Pontiac to places as close by as the Southfield Town Center on Northwestern Highway. The next day, theLocal 4 News team followed along as Mr. Prokop showed me the empty suite in the Southfield Town Center hewould be donating to us, and overflowing with gratitude and disbelief, I found myself beginning to cry.
We live in a cynical and dangerous time, and it can be difficult to focus on the positive aspects of our day-to-daylives. But good people are everywhere, and they're willing to help — as long as you'll reach out and call on themwhen you need them.
Never be afraid to ask for help — we all need it sometimes. And one day, when you are back on your feet... youmight just be able to pay it forward.
That is what the Southfield Goodfellows are aiming to do this year, and for many more years to come. To all thosewho are struggling this time of year, or have struggled in the past — we are with you. And
for everyone who has helped us help countless others — from the bottom of our hearts, we thank you. Everythingyou give, from a $5 donation to a signal boost on social media to a new coat for a needy child, helps someone whowould otherwise go without.
Your faith in us helps move mountains. Let's continue to work together to spread that joy.
