Everyday Epiphany
With God All is Possible (Readings: Psalm 90; Hebrew 4:12-13/Mark 10:17-30)
Have you ever felt that the challenges of being an authentic disciple are just too great?
Have you been overwhelmed by Jesus’ teachings? Love your enemies; pray for your
persecutors. Offer no resistance to injury. When a person strikes you on the right cheek,
turn and offer him the other. In giving alms, do not let your left hand know what your
right hand is doing. Do not lay up for yourselves an earthly treasure. Store up treasure in
heaven. Forgive without limit. Do not turn away the borrower: Sell what you have and give
it to the poor: Judge not, lest you be judged. Become as little children. Love one another as
I have loved you. Repent and believe the good news.
Could we do these? Do we even want to do these? Like the disciples of old, we ask the same
question to Jesus: “Then, who can be saved? What must I/we do to inherit eternal life?”
Every challenge, every demand Jesus places upon his followers becomes possible if, by
faith. We have to learn how to rely on God’s grace and to approach every challenge as an
opportunity to respond to God’s call.
In the prayer traditionally attributed to King Solomon, who was not a perfect man or king,
we hear that he realized the importance of God and of Wisdom above all things in his life.
With his priorities aligned correctly, he prayed not for wealth or health or an extended and
prosperous reign, but for gifts that would make him a better person. The spiritual posture
with which King Solomon came before the Lord can be an example for all who rely on God.
Without a “shopping list,” he prayed. In openness to God’s will and God’s ways, he
prayed. With patience and trust, he prayed. He also prayed without a timeline as to when
his prayers should be answered. Without a doubt that God knew him intimately and
heeded him, he prayed. Perhaps Solomon had been allowed a glimpse into the mystery
“God’s word is living and effective…able to discern reflections and thoughts of the heart
(Psalm 90).” Indeed, to be sure of that is to pray with utter confidence.
To know and be known by God is at once a source of fear and a source of perfect joy – fear,
because we know our sins and infidelities; joy because God knows us completely, loves us
fully, forgives us freely and chooses to enter into communion with us. This is the God
revealed in Jesus. This is the God whose grace makes possible our authentic response to
Jesus’ seemingly impossible commands.
With Jesus, discipleship is always partnership. He is indeed our Lord and our God, and he
is also our Brother, Friend, Teacher and Yokemate who looks at each of us with a love that
strengthens and supports us!
In Loving Partnership,
Pastor Lily

Among Our Family Congratulations to Sammy & Maddie S. on their recent
accomplishments! Maddie was selected to be on the
Mayor’s Youth Council and will be presented at the City
Council Meeting on October 7th. Five students were
selected out of the school district. Maddie will meet with
the Mayor twice monthly to review policy as it relates to
youth in Corona. She also won a scholastic gold key
early this year competing with over 300,000 high school
students. Sammy partnered with Altura Credit Union and
raised $5,000 for the Settlement House. You can see
Sammy’s campaign billboards on the 60 Freeway! She is
also competing in the heptathlon for Riverside
Community College.
Pastor Lily Leads “Revival” Pastor Lily will facilitate an Adult Small Group Study
on Mondays at 7pm for 6 weeks beginning October
5th. We will study Adam Hamilton’s book, Revival. Wesley’s message and his faith continue to speak to 21st
century Christians – calling for a revival of our hearts and
souls so that our world might be changed. Join Adam
Hamilton for a six-week journey as he travels to England,
following the life of John Wesley and exploring his
defining characteristics of a Wesleyan Christian.
Wesley’s story is our story. It defines our faith and it
challenges us to rediscover our spiritual passion. This is a
gracious gift that we will benefit from reading. The
commentary is written by a superb preacher who has a
pastor’s heart and knows how to make the past come alive
to strengthen our own experience. Prepare to be
transformed!
Coffee & Tea with Pastor Lily On Sundays, October 4th and December 6th, Pastor Lily
will host a discussion at 11:30 a.m. here at the church for
anyone who has any questions or would like more
information about sermons Pastor Lily has preached.
We ask prayers for: Ken & Mary Ann E., Mike M.,
Victor P. and Cheryl U.
It is our great joy to welcome everyone to our worship services!
Corona UMC is blessed by your presence and grace. We hope to
greet you in person after worship and invite you to join our Coffee
Hour Fellowship. Our worship begins at 10 a.m. and concludes
around 11:15 a.m. If you find it necessary to leave at any given
time, please feel free to stand and move reverently through the exit
doors. Thank you and God Bless!
