werebecomingprominent.Wewereneverhungry.Motherbroughtinenoughfood.Why,justlast

weekskillwasahugebuffalo,andtheremainsaftereatingourfill,motherhadburiedintheground

Withmothergone,wewerecaughtandtransferredtozoosinlittlecitiesandtownstillwecameof

ageandlandedinIndiabysea.Oncehere,Iwasputintoawildlifeparkandmylittlebrotherwasput

intoanothertigerReserve. Wehowledandsnarledandfoughtwiththehumanswhowereintentin

keepingusapart.Whyweretheyseparatingus,howcouldthey?Whatwouldhappentome,what

wouldhappentomylittlebrother,wherewouldhego?Willtheykillhimlikefatherandtherestof

myfamilymembers?Eventuallywewereseparated,andwithmybrothergone,Iresignedtoakind

offatethefuturewouldbring.Tiredandwithnofightleftinme,Iwasbundledintoacageonajeep

andtransportedintoaPark. Iwasdelightedtoseemybrotheralreadythereandwebothtumbled

intheparkhavingtheglorious freedomofroamingabout.Heretherewasplentyofkilland fresh

waterandwithoutthefearofhumans.ThisParkhadboundarywallsandhugegatescontrolledby

humans.

sandypathway.

CUBSNEWKIDSINTHEPARK

The

cubs

were

spotted

by

the

rangers

near

the

water

and

they

were

at

least

three

months

old.

But

wherewastheirmother?Shewouldbenearby.Iremembermymotherwouldcatchusbythescuff

ofournecksandcarryusofftoacoolerplacewhichwouldbenearthewaterhole.Hereitwascool

andwouldalsoenabletherangerstokeepaneye.IlikedthisPark,verymuchlikethejunglesfrom

where Icame from.Twoof thecubswerealmostsixmonthsold,araresight,butverywelcome.

Cubsbelowoneyearofagehaveincreasedtooveradozenandfromoneyeartotwotosixyearsof

age.Wewereincludedinthisgroupasmybrotherlearnedtoadjustinhisnewsurroundings.Me,I

somehowalwayshadapeculiarpaininmyleftlegandeyeaswellasmyabdomen.Sometimesthe

painwasthere,othertimesitwouldnotbe,anyhow,Ilearnedtolivewithit.

SARISKANotigers

TheOfficerswereatthetimecontemplatingshiftingawhole lotofustoSariskaastherewereno

tigersleft.TheSariskaSanctuarywastotallyemptyoftigersandwhatwasmostsaddeningwasthe

factthatinspiteofthegovernmentsefforts,poacherscontinuedtofilterintoSariskaandkilltigers.

ThegreedforWildGoldwasscalingnewheights.

Now,congratulationsareinorder,why,becauseofthediscoveryofthesenewkidsontheblock.At

least the tiger populationwhichwas very low at Ranthamborewill now come up. Therewere

enoughofustigerstosharetheParkwiththenewcubsintheWildReserveofSariska.All14cubs

werecountedatthewaterhole.ThiswasdefinitelyaboosttothedwindlingnumbersofTigers.

IndiahadrejectedtheWorldBanksoffertofundingthetigerstosavethem.TheIndiangovernment

saidthattheyhadenoughfundstotackleTigerConservationdomesticallywithoutoutsidehelp.Our

forestrangershadwrittenagainsttheBanksoffer lettertothegovernmenttotakethe loan.Yes,

thiswasdoneby the twobiggestRangers,Mr.ValmikThaparandMr.UllasKaranth, in theTiger

Conservationcircuit.

Actually,whatwasproposedby theNationalBoardofWildlifeandotherconservationistswas for

theBanktolaunchaprogramacrossalltigerbearingcountriesincludingChinaandIndiatheformer

beingakeymarket for tigerpartsand the latteroneof thebiggest reservoirof tigers left in the

world.

Thiswas launchedonJune9,2008,roping insomeofthe famousHollywoodstars,butour Indian

governmentdecidednottoendorsetheevent.Butthen,whathappenstoustigersthatremainat

themercybetween theGovernmentand theWorldBank?There is alwayshopeasmorewas to

come.

TheWorldBanksuggestedthatitwasinapositiontohaveameetingofhighlevelcountriesonthe

issueandhostahugesummitonTigerWildlifefor2010.Butthen,themembersoftheBankpointed

outthatitwouldbeasuccessifonlyIndiaparticipated.Butasusualofmine,iheardthroughsources

ofmine,thatatthisjuncture,theIndiangovernmentwouldnotseeanyreasonforseekingthishelp

fromtheBank,whichinfacthasnorecordofhelpinganyorworkingonanyconservation.TheIndian

Governmentsspokespersonpointedout,thatitisboundtotreadverycarefullyaboutacceptingany

suchproposals in future.Nowall that remains in theendof takinghelp from theWorldBank, is

rejectingitsofferfullscale.Butthenhowarewetigerslookedafter.TheNationalParksdoneeda

lotofcareandattendingtoespeciallythefencingandthewaterholearea.

StillothersourcesofminesaythattheIndianGovernmentinthepastyearshasactedverystrongly

againstemergency (ies)oremerging tiger crisis andhasbackedup several legalproposals in the

connectiontotheprotectionregime.IndiaasaNationofitsNationalanimaldoesnotseehowthe

Bankcouldlendanyadvantageonthesubjectunderdiscussion.
