The War Poets section follows a number of the most famous world war poets from Wilfred Owen, John McCrae and Rupert Brooke to Siegfried Sassoon and Alan Seeger.

1. Brooke is trying to explain that wherever he may die in battle, that place will become England. Stanza 1, Lines 1-5

2. He wants readers to believe that his love of country is so strong that foreign soil will change nationalities when he dies on it. Stanza 1, Lines 6-8

DULCE ET DECORUM ESTBY W I L F R E D O W E N

The poem presents a vignette from the front lines of World War I; specifically, of British soldiers attacked with chemical weapons. In the rush to equip themselves against the gas, one soldier is unable to get his mask on in time. The speaker describes the gruesome effects of the gas on the man and the reality of war.

2. Prufrock describes the suffering from his social actions. He thinks about women's arms, perfume, lonely men; but he can not do anything, and he admits that he is afraid. Lines 37-86

1. J. Alfred Prufrock describes the modern city, the street scene, and women, yellow smoke and fog outside the house, and insist that there will be time to act in the social world. Lines 1-36

3. Prufrock wonders if a woman reject him after asking for love. He thinks he is not a Prince; and he worried over growing old, and adopts the fashions of youth. By the beach, he sees images of mermaids singing and swimming. Lines 87-132
