The Corriedale Extra 3
Greetings fellow Corriedale enthusiasts,
Among us there are as many differences as there are similarities. We live from coast to coast. For some the production of
livestock provides a livelihood, for other it provides an escape from the daily grind. Whatever the differences, we are brought together because of our appreciation for the Corriedale breed. This versatile breed offers us each something to appreciate, whatever our individual situation. The char-acteristics we value and select vary to best fit own needs. Despite those variances, these sheep share a history and breed standards. Each of us is committed to advancing the fu-ture of the Corriedale breed. What is your part in the future of Corriedales? Each of
President’s Note us can maintain integrity in our breeding programs, so that the animals we produce represent the best the Corriedale breed has to offer. Those of us who know and love the breed realize there is a place for them with those interested in being a part of the sheep industry. Through promotion we can gain new breeders, through mentoring and cooperation we can retain those breeders. Our similarities brought us together, but it may be our differences that are our strength as a membership. Many of you can likely contribute to the future of the Corrie-dale breed in your own way. I look forward to approaching the future with you all.

Hello, my name is Wayne Kemler and I reside in the Buckeye State, Ohio. I was elected to serve on the American Corriedale Association Executive Board at the 2009 Na-tional Show & Sale in Altamont, Illinois. I started my Corrie-dale flock as a FFA proj-ect in 1965. My wife Karen and I have raised four children and they showed the Corrie-dales in 4-H and FFA. They also enjoyed ex-hibiting at state and county fairs. With my farming obligations and a grow-ing family it was difficult to get away to ex-hibit at the sales, but with David coming on board to help with the farming it is easier to get away. We now have more time to at-tend the summer shows, Ohio State Fair and
Director Profile county fairs. I have always wanted to be a director for the American Corriedale Association. I will do my best to represent the breed and its members in the future years.

The Ohio Corriedale Club is promoting the advantages of the Corriedale breed to 4-H and FFA members by offering two yearling ewes to a member to start their breeding sheep projects. The Kin Broth-ers Corriedales of Upper Sandusky and Romine Corriedales of Galion donated the two Corriedale ewes awarded this year. Seth Romine was the first recipi-
Ohio Corriedale Club gives two ewesent of two ewes in the essay contest in 2001. Youth members wrote an essay stating their experience and why they would like to start a Corriedale flock. The winner of the essay contest for the Corriedale ewes for this year is Abigail Thornton of Aman-da, Ohio in Pickaway County. Abigail is the daughter of Tom and Angie Thornton and is in the Saddle and Sirloin 4-H Club. She is nine years old and has one year of previous experience in 4-H with sheep projects. Abigail showed the ewes at the Pickaway County Fair and at the Ohio State Fair Junior and Open Class Breeding Sheep Shows in August. She received the Best Fleece Award in the Corriedale Junior Fair Show. Abigail will care for her sheep through the lambing season, hopefully including the offspring in her 4-H projects in the fol-lowing years. Abigail stated in her essay that she enjoys working with the lambs and plans to attend veterinary school.

Due to the continued generosity of the Pennsylvania Corriedale breeders, it was once again possible to run the PA Corriedale Association Youth Expansion Project in 2010. The PA Youth Promotion Program began in 2000. At that time seven youth each re-ceived a lamb from an established Pennsyl-vania Corriedale breeder. The youth raised the lambs and showed them at local fairs, as well as a class created especially for the pro-motion lambs at Keystone International Live-stock Expo (KILE) in Harrisburg. Some of the lambs were also shown at the Pennsylvania Farm Show. The KILE class continues today with each new promotion. In the first promotion in 2002 breeders
Recipients of the Youth Expansion Project, from left, Sarah Vamvakias of Boyertown, PA (spon-sored by the Bowmans); Alyssa Balink of East Fallowfield, PA (sponsored by the Rupperts); Heather Miller of Halifax, PA (sponsored by the Bows). In back, Geoff Ruppert and Ben Bow.
donated lambs to four new young people. They, too, were encouraged to exhibit their lambs at KILE, Farm Show, and local fairs. Other promotions were in both 2004 and 2008, bringing the total to over 16 started lambs. Adding in the three lambs given away this year, the PA Association has provided over 20 lambs to the youth of Pennsylvania. In order for the 2010 Promotion to be suc-cessful, support from PA member families, including the Bows, Bowmans and Rupperts, was needed. The PA Association thanks the families who have supported the Promotion over the years, and a special thank you goes out to the 2010 families supporting the ef-fort this year!

Dew Drop Farms has been raising Corriedales for 20 years as of 2010. Some of our early success would include Top Sell-ing Ram in 1996, that would be followed by the record-selling ewe lamb at the 1997 Nationals. Since that time we have sold several National Champion rams and ewes capping it off with the Grand Champion Ewe and Junior Champion at this year’s National Show and Sale. Although the sheep have treated us good the people have been the best part of the breed. I’ve lit-erally watched families grow up by seeing them at the sheep shows and sales throughout the years. I can recall kids riding their bikes or trikes by the pens and a few years later I’m asking them to help show, the kids get older but I don’t!

Merlau Farms is home of National Champions! National Sale Grand Champion Ram, 1st Place Yearling Ram (on cover) sired by our Seals Stud. He was Champion for my grandson, John K. St.Amour, at Indiana on his only show appear-ance. The kids were unhappy when I chose to let this great ram go so they purchased him! After breeding all of their ewes they resold him to Lyle & Lanny Crawford this fall. Watch for lambs from this tremendous stud PROSPECT in both flocks. National Sale Grand Champion Ewe, 1st Place Yearling Ewe. We added Dew Drop Farms’ Grand Champion Ewe!

Jacey Cook of Missouri is the winner of the AJCA Give Away Ewe Lamb.
2010 AJCA Lamb Give Away Winner Jacey Cook is 9 years old and lives in Ham-ilton, Mo. She is a member of the Shooting Stars 4-H Club and has been showing her Corriedales for five years. She exhibited three years in Pee Wee classes. This was the first time for Jacey and her family to attend the Midwest Stud Ram Sale and she signed up for the drawing sponsored by the Amer-ican Junior Corriedale Association. The AJCA gives away two $50 vouchers and the first ewe lamb to bring $200 during the Na-tional Sale each year is given to a junior. All juniors are eligible to sign up even if you do not currently raise Corriedales. Jacey’s name was drawn and when it was announced she had won a ewe lamb she jumped with excitement. She has shown
her ewe lamb at seven county fairs and the Missouri State Fair 4-H and open shows. The lamb was owned by Ben and Mary Bow and was futurity nominated so Jacey is able to send in her score sheets and compete for the futurity prize money this year. Jacey thanks the Bows and the American Junior Corriedale Association for this op-portunity to own and show her new ewe lamb.

She is currently an active member in FFA, 4-H, National Honor Society, student council, band, choir, Lu-ther league, Sunday school/VBS teacher, and FROG (Friends Rejoicing Over God). When Jamie is not busy, she enjoys read-ing books or playing piano. Dakota is 13 and an 8th Grader at Viborg Public School, Viborg, S.D. Dakota partici-pates in football, basketball, and runs in track. He is also active in his local 4-H club and FFA chapter. They are the children of Tim and Kim
Flint. Their family has been involved in the sheep business for roughly 35 years. They did not begin to raise show sheep until Jamie started 4-H in 2001. Dakota started showing soon after, when he was 8 years old. From there the Flint family started to expand their purebred Corriedale flock. They currently have 30 purebred Cor-riedales and lamb out approximately 500 commercial ewes. Jamie and Dakota en-joyed going to the National Junior Corrie-dale show for the first time this summer in Sedalia, Mo. and were happy with the out come.
Flint Family enjoys the show ringDakota Flint, left and Jamie Flint enjoyed showing at the South Dakota State Fair.

Hopefully we can reduce these in the future, but due to economic condi-tions the dues increase is necessary. I have taken a $500 deduction on my salary last year and will do so again this year to help out, but we are ask-ing for each member to work with us on this dues increase for the ACA.
