Structural Integrity refers to the physical
condition of the building, structure or relic and
the sympathy with which alterations have been made
to its fabric. Some items have remained unchanged
since theY w~re instal'led or' erected ~hiLe others
have been alte~ed and completely or partially
dismantled.
Interpretive. ability is the ease with which a
building or relic can demonstrate the part it
played in a process or in the development of a
site. Purpose-built structures on these sites and
associated plant and machines lend themselves to
interpretation of methods employed in mid
twentieth century Power Houses.
Operational ability is the ability of a machine to
be operated in its present condition. This means
opera tiona 1. ~'Ji th a min imum amoun t of ~'JOr-k being
done ·to· it ..and prcivided th~t norm~l facilities
such as power sour.ce or other materials are
available.
Relative rarity is the measure of the number of
similar items eXisting now as compared to the
number originally made. For example,. the sole
remaining two metre-long quadruple-sheave
hydraulic ram, of which there were literally
hundreds made, is regarded in the relative rarity
category as being of greater significance than the
sole remaining ten metre-long-sheave hydraulic ram
of which only four were ever installed.

It should be st~essed that the rating of a
building or relic will change over time and that
this report is relevant only for the period in,
which it wa~ writt~n.
These inventory sheets are meant as a guide only
to the assessment of cultural significance and
should not" be regarded as part of a conservation

recommended for conservation should have
conservation plans prepared before any
interfe~ence takes place with thei~ fabric.

DESCRIPTION: Coal was stored in pits within the two sheds to the right of thepicture, and conveyed via hoppers, to the corrugated iron clad coal crusherhouse on the left. The coal went through the hoppers above, and crushers atground level, and was transfered into a pit below. From 'here it was conveyedunderground to the building on the right, and finally onto the main concreteconveyor leading towards the power station. Two cottages nearby have since beendemolished and an amenities block was located where the carpenters shop nowstands.
