A 15-year record was smashed three
times during the opening Magic
Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale
session yesterday, with a high-
profile Fastnet Rock (Danehill) colt making
$525,000 and setting the tone for a stellar day’s
trade.
Buyers’ willingness to break budgets in
order to secure the best-credentialed yearlings
- a trend experienced throughout the 2021 sales
series so far - also saw a Palentino (Teofilo) filly
sell for $370,000 and a daughter of Merchant
Navy (Fastnet Rock) make $360,000 on day one.
The trio of high-priced lots broke the
company’s long-standing Adelaide benchmark
of $340,000 when subsequent stakes winner
Victory Chant (General Nediym) was sold in
2006.

The auction got off to a slow start in
typical yearling sale fashion, but the action soon heated up with day one’s
star attraction coming in the first hour of the session when bloodstock
manager Brian McGuire acted for Sydney trainer Annabel Neasham and
Hong Kong owner Tony Fung to buy the brother to this season’s Inglis
Banner (RL, 1000m) and Golden Gift (1100m) winner Sneaky Five.
“He’s in and around with the best colts that we’ve got all year,” McGuire
said of the Fastnet Rock acquisition.
“He’s by a proven stallion, Fastnet has had three Group 1 winners
already this season, the mare was a great producer and a good racehorse
herself and, physically, he’s a horse. He’s a really, really top colt.”
Adelaide trainer Will Clarken was the under bidder.
Catalogued as Lot 22, the colt is the fifth living foal out of Australasian
Oaks (Gr 1, 2006m) winner
Small Minds (Canny Lad)
who has already produced
Perth stakes winner Beautiful
Mind (So You Think) as well as
the Ciaron Maher and David
Eustace-trained Sneaky Five,
who is raced by Rosemont Stud.
Goldin Farms manager Jeff
Gordon said the decision was
made to sell the colt in Adelaide rather than sending him to higher profile
auctions interstate.
“It is not as if we’ve got 15 Fastnet Rocks and 20 Redoutes’ and five
Snitzels, we’ve only got the one good colt by a highly commercial sire,
so we have got to take the risk factor out of it by keeping him at home,”
Gordon said.
“In Sydney (Easter) he could have been swallowed up in a big market
up there. Sometimes they can get overlooked in a place like that.
“At this sale they came from all around to look at him, so it does make
a bit of sense.
“The sister did a great job, winning nearly a million dollars in two
starts, and I think it is a fantastic result, really.”

Boomer flies in to buy star Merchant Navy fillyGoldin Farms also sold the Merchant Navy filly after Queensland-
based agent, Boomer Bloodstock’s Craig Rounsefell, made a flying visit to
Adelaide to give the tick of approval to his Victorian client Peter Murray.
By Coolmore’s dual hemisphere Group 1-winning sprinter, the filly
carries significant residual value being out of Listed winner Bacchanal
Woman (Encosta De Lago), whose three foals to race are all winners,
including Group 3 winner Sweet Scandal (Sepoy) and the stakes-placed
Sir Bacchus (Sebring). She was offered as Lot 110.
“My client Peter Murray picked this filly out quite a while ago in the
catalogue. He just loved her pedigree. I wasn’t planning on coming down,
but she vetted out and I got on the plane (on Monday) night and I saw her
this morning,” Rounsefell said yesterday,
“She’s a filly Pete can race and then add to his broodmare band. He is
building up a really impressive line of mares and this one has the pedigree
behind her.
“The reports from the vet were good and when I saw her she is the best
Merchant Navy I have seen this year and, as a type, she has all the things
we are looking for, so it’s really exciting.”
The last-minute trip to Adelaide for Rounsefell came after he was
forced to drive from his Gold Coast home to the Inglis Premier Yearling
Sale due to Covid-19 border closures.
“This time of year I am normally back in America, but with Covid that
has restricted me,” he said.
“There were a few different things with the Melbourne sale. I had
to drive down because the Queensland border was shut. I have a three-
month-old baby, so I had to get home, but Peter Murray is a very good
client of mine and I am happy to travel anywhere for the clients who
support me.”
Earlier, Goldin Farms also sold the Akeed Mofeed (Dubawi) brother to
the stakes-placed sprinter Sunset Watch for $120,000 to Victorian trainer
Patrick Payne.
Offered as Lot 3, he is the fifth foal out of the stakes-placed Saramenha
(Snitzel), herself a half-sister to the Singapore stakes winner In Bloom
(Brocco).
“He wasn’t a typical Akeed Mofeed. If you have a look at a Biscay horse
back in the 60s and 70s, you would swear he was one of those. He was a
really good colt,” Gordon said.
Balfour in love with high-priced Palentino filly
Ryan Balfour has such
unwavering confidence his
three-year-old Outlaw’s Revenge
(Reward For Effort) will be a
major player in Adelaide’s sprint
races in the coming months that
he was not going home without
his Palentino half-sister, despite
commanding a big price tag.
The $370,000 gives the filly
the honour as the most expensive filly sold at a Magic Millions sale in
Adelaide, while she is also the highest-priced yearling by Widden Stud
Victoria-based sire Palentino.
Balfour had to ward off rival Adelaide trainers Leon Macdonald and
Andrew Gluyas to buy the filly.
“It was a huge part of it and I’ve got full confidence in the half-brother
Outlaw’s Revenge. He’s going to the Redelva and then the Euclase and
he will be making his presence felt, so this filly should have a black type
brother,” Balfour said.
“One thing about her, when I saw her I thought, ‘wow, she’s identical
to him’ and I think that’s a really important part when a mare stamps them
like that and you know that is going through them.
“Palentino is doing a good job for what he has had to the races, but
he still has to get out there and prove it. This filly’s been stamped and wait
until you see her brother in the autumn.”
Offered by Willow Grove Stud as Lot 79, she is the sixth foal out of
Wings Of Alice (Testa Rossa), making her a half-sister to the Malaysian
stakes winner Violet (Mint Lane) and three other winners including
Outlaw’s Revenge. Further back in her pedigree is the exciting three-year-
old filly Written Beauty (Written Tycoon) and fellow stakes winners Hi
World (High Chaparral), Loveyamadly (Bel Esprit) and Ducimus (Snitzel).
Wings Of Alice does not have a foal at foot but she is in foal to
Swettenham Stud’s first season sire I Am Immortal (I Am Invincible).
The milestone was a significant achievement for breeder Ralph Satchell
who has been selling in Adelaide for more than four decades. Willow Grove’s
previous highest-priced yearling was Tequila Time (Stratum) who made
$170,000 through the same sales ring in 2017.

“We made the policy of selling our
entire draft in Adelaide and I have always said if we had $300,000 yearlings
or $30,000 ones we would sell them in Adelaide,” he said.
“If we bring the product here, we can bring the buyers here and to get
a result like this.
“The Palentino filly franks that thought and that’s what we will
continue to do. The A team comes to Adelaide.”
Satchell says the “stars aligned” as South Australian owners and
trainers embraced their local sale, leading to the intense competition for
his filly.
Despite the financial windfall, there won’t be any lavish celebrations,
with the long-time breeder preferring a “Coca Cola and some KFC” to
ensure he is ready for today’s session.
“There were times when we came to these sales where if we could get
five grand for a horse, we would then be able to pay the feed bill,” he said.
“So, it’s great to be selling these horses and that our breeding program
and strategies are gelling into nice horses that the market wants.”
Market surges as diverse buying bench takes up Adelaide opportunity
Yesterday’s buoyant trade ended with 21 lots making $100,000 or
more, already surpassing the 14 sold at that mark at last year’s sale.
Once buyers and vendors found an equilibrium, the clearance rate
picked up markedly and was at 84 per cent last night with 164 horses
finding new homes at an average of $55,790, which was up 41 per cent
year-on-year.
The median was up $10,000 to $40,000 while the aggregate of
$9,149,500 was also up 28 per cent.
“Today was a fantastic day for South Australia on the back of what
the team at Racing SA is doing with Racing Rewards and turning racing
around in the state,” Magic Millions managing director Barry Bowditch
declared last night.
“It’s a huge confidence booster and we’ve seen the local trainers get
right behind the sale by pushing hard on these very good horses and I
think that gives the breeders in South Australia a lot of confidence to
reinvest and to continue on and support this sale more heavily in the years
to come.”
Goldin Farms is the
leading vendor after day one,
selling seven yearlings for
$1.199 million at an average of
$171,286, while Baramul Stud
sold 12 yearlings for $806,000.
Willow Grove Stud also sold
seven yearlings for a total of
$707,500.
“The three big lots for the
day were from Goldin Farms
and Willow Grove and all
their yearlings are at this sale.
They’ve sold their best here and
I’m thrilled for Pan Sutong and Jeff Gordon who made the call to sell an
outstanding Fastnet Rock colt in Adelaide and they got rewarded and
justifiably so,” Bowditch said.
“Ralph Satchell, too, is a fantastic supporter of Magic Millions Adelaide
and the industry in South Australia in general, so for him to get a result like
that was pretty surreal for him at the time I think.
“These are two hard-working groups who are investing and bringing
their horses here, so for them to get a result is exactly what we’ve been
striving for in Adelaide a while now.”
Melbourne trainer Mark Kavanagh continued his support of the
Australian sales this year by purchasing nine lots yesterday for a total of
$466,000. Adelaide trainer Will Clarken bought seven lots with various
partners, while Murray Bridge trainer Michael Hickmott bought five
yearlings.
“There was a great cross-section of buyers and a cross-section of
breeds making good money, so there was no one dominating the market,”
Bowditch continued.
“If you’ve got the right product, and it’s the same at any sale and it was
evident here today, you can get very good money for horses.”
The second session, which starts at 10am today, is expected to
maintain a strong demand with the conclusion of Book 1 as well as the
Book 2 sale.

When Good Idea (So You
Think) outstayed his rivals
in Monday’s Adelaide Cup
(Gr 2, 3200m) carrying the
colours of the late Dato’ Tan Chin Nam, great
racing memories came flooding back for many.
The win reminded us of Melbourne Cups
(Gr 1, 3200m) and Cox Plates (Gr 1, 2040m)
gone by when the famous chess board silks
became iconic through the deeds of horses
such as Saintly (Sky Chase) and So You Think
(High Chaparral).
Good Idea, a home bred out of Group
1-winning mare Faint Perfume (Shamardal),
races for the Estate of the late Dato’ Tan Chin Nam
and continues the huge legacy of the Malaysian
businessman who died in 2018 aged 93.
Duncan Ramage, the long time racing
manager for Chin Nam, still takes care of
the family’s bloodstock interests in Australia
today, and says the performance of Good Idea
at Morphettville justifies a tilt at this year’s
Melbourne Cup.
“I think even if the favourite (Tralee Rose)
got a better run in transit it would not have
beaten him.
“The performance was probably above my
expectations but Phillip (Stokes) was confident.
He had put the ground work into this horse. It
was a great training performance to get him up
to two miles in such a short time,” said Ramage.
Good Idea could run in the upcoming
Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) or instead be
reserved for the Andrew Ramsden Stakes
(Listed, 2800m) at Flemington on May 15,
which provides the winner with automatic
entry into the Melbourne Cup.
“We will leave it up to Phillip to determine
how he’s recovered from a rushed campaign
into the Adelaide Cup and whether a Sydney
Cup is viable.
“Phillip deserves the chance to get him into
the Melbourne Cup and see what happens. He’s
passed the first ballot clause and may get high
up enough in the rankings to force a passage
into it.”
And should Good Idea make the cut, he
might not be the only horse sporting Dato’ Chin
Nam’s colours in the race this year.
The Estate that represents his three
children, Tan Boon Seng, Tan Boon Lee and
Tan Lei Cheng, also owns the winner of last
November’s Sandown Cup (Listed, 3200m),
Carif (So You Think), who has been earmarked
as a potential contender.
“We are delighted with the Adelaide Cup
and Sandown Cup but we just have to improve
what cup it is now,” joked Ramage.
Like Good Idea, Carif is a home bred son of
So You Think. He’s out of Group 1-winning mare
Norzita (Thorn Park) who the family raced,
and eventually sold to Arrowfield Stud for $1.7
million at the 2019 Inglis Chairman’s sale in
foal to Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice). The resultant
yearling filly is entered for next month’s Inglis
Australian Easter Yearling sale as lot 455.
“Fingers crossed we will have two horses
in the Cup which are both home breds by a
stallion and two mares that we raced.
“These horses both stem from some of our
original yearling acquisitions that have bred on.
There would not be too many people breeding
major winners by sires and dams they raced
themselves. All of these horses were multiple
Group 1 winners in their own right and have
now combined to win stakes races themselves.”
Whilst Think Big Stud’s breeding interests and
stud operations have been wound up, the recent
racetrack success has unquestionably inspired
Dato’ Chin Nam’s children to show a deeper
commitment to investing in Australian racing.
“They are delighted. They have got keen on
seeing their colours win and they talk about
‘dad’s’ colours.”

Thinking Big aboutanother Melbourne Cup
THERE WOULD NOT BE TOO MANY PEOPLE BREEDING MAJOR WINNERS BY SIRES AND DAMS THEY RACED THEMSELVES. ALL OF THESE HORSES WERE MULTIPLE GROUP 1 WINNERS IN THEIR OWN RIGHT AND HAVE NOW COMBINED TO WIN STAKES RACES THEMSELVES- DUNCAN RAMAGE
| 12 |
So far this year they have bought into a
total of eight yearlings - at the Magic Millions
Gold Coast Yearling Sale (five) and the New
Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale
(three).
“We are not the major owner in every
horse now but they are keen and want to
make sure every horse we are in is carrying
their colours.”
The Estate of the late Dato’ Tan Chin Nam
now has horses positioned with Anthony
Cummings, Snowden Racing, Mick Price and
Mick Kent Jnr, John O’Shea, Chris Anderson
John Sargent and John Thompson.
Carif and Good Idea will be amongst the last
of their home-bred horses to race in Australia.
“Think Big’s breeding will come to an end
because that's not what the family wants to do
so they will be the last of the true homebreds.
“Unless you are breeding in big numbers
you are better off buying them. The cost of
running a stud properly is very expensive.”
Ramage explained that their racing
interests nowadays are funded solely from
revenue generated by horse activities.
“We are running off revenue. Prize-money
and service fees are providing upkeep and
investment for future acquisitions.
“It’s not a rich man's toy with money
injected as needed, it’s run as a company and
there wouldn't be too many racing outfits that
are running off revenue. Although a bit of extra
working capital would be marvellous, nothing
that a Melbourne Cup win wouldn’t assist. ” he
said.

AUSTRALIA
Arcadia Queen cut for ASM after barrier drawThe Grant and Alana Williams-trained Arcadia
Queen (Pierro) has been shortened in the betting
for Saturday’s All-Star Mile (1600m) after drawing
barrier five. The three-time Group 1-winning
mare was cut to $3.20 with TAB for the Moonee
Valley contest as connections chase a second
All-Star Mile win after scoring with Regal Power
(Pierro) last year at Caulfield. Second favourite
Probabeel (Savabeel) was handed gate ten, while
Russian Camelot (Camelot) will break from
barrier two. Of the others towards the head of the
market, Mugatoo (Henrythenavigator) has drawn
eight, Behemoth (All Too Hard) has the inside
gate of one and possible runner Sir Dragonet
(Camelot) was handed nine.
Pike delighted with drawWilliam Pike reacted positively to the news
Arcadia Queen had drawn barrier five as he
bids to replicate last year’s success aboard
Regal Power. "Hopefully it turns out to be okay,"
Pike told The Races WA. "It looks to be perfect
for her. There will be a few horses there who
will keep me off the fence. I should be able to
put her where I think I need to, there can be
a lot of pressure leading to the first bend over
the mile at Moonee Valley. I will jump her away
cleanly if I can and keep her in a rhythm. I will
have her poised and ready to make the second
half the best half.” Pike is pleased with the Bob
and Sandra Peters-raced mare, who finished
runner-up to Probabeel in the Futurity Stakes
(Gr 1, 1400m) prior to a jump-out at Bendigo
last week. "She feels really good, she always
does," he added. "She looks fantastic and has
come on since her first-up run.”
Mugatoo impresses in Valley gallopThe Kris Lees-trained Mugatoo impressed in
a gallop at Moonee Valley yesterday morning
under former top jockey Nick Ryan. Mugatoo
finished fifth in the Apollo Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m)
first-up last month and Lees hopes he has him
poised for a big run on Saturday. “Nick rode
him last prep and so I thought I’d leave him on
for this morning,” the trainer told Racing.com.
“He was really happy with him. He said every
time he asked him to extend, he did and that’s
all I wanted to see. He wasn’t out to run time
or anything. We’re just ticking him over and
just gave him a look around the track because
he’s pretty fit for a horse going to the mile,
and if anything he’s probably looking for a bit
further. That’s the reason for the four-week gap
(between runs).”
Jolly unsure about Behemoth drawDavid Jolly is hoping dual Group 1 winner
Behemoth will be able to successfully navigate
his barrier one draw in the All-Star Mile. Craig
Williams, whose only two competitive rides on
Behemoth came when winning the Memsie
Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) and Sir Rupert Clarke
Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) in the spring, will partner
the five-year-old on Saturday, taking over from
Damien Oliver who rode him to fourth in the
Futurity Stakes last start. “I didn’t really want
to draw out and I think he’s better covered up,”
Jolly told RSN. “Hopefully we can get a nice
enough run and then get off the fence. It is what
it is.”
Maher watching forecast for DragonetCiaron Maher and David Eustace are keen
to do what is best for Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m)
winner Sir Dragonet ahead of committing
to a start the All-Star Mile, with connections
keeping a close eye on the weather forecast. Sir
Dragonet galloped at Moonee Valley yesterday
and Maher said if the track was in the same
condition on raceday, then he would run. "I'd
love to tell you that he will be running, but that
wouldn't be doing what is best by the horse and
that's first and foremost," Maher said. "As much
as you can rely on the weather, there looks to be
a bit of rain about on Saturday. Hopefully that
comes and if the conditions are right, he'll take
his place."
Russian Camelot on target for ASMDanny O’Brien is confident Russian Camelot
can produce a big first-up performance in the
All-Star Mile. Russian Camelot’s last raceday
start was in November’s Melbourne Cup (Gr 1,
3200m) where he finished eighth, but O’Brien
believes he has him in peak fitness ahead of
Saturday and was delighted with his gallop
at Moonee Valley yesterday under Damian
Oliver. "There's no concern about him being
forward enough or fit enough," O’Brien told
Racing.com. "He's just got to be good enough
to beat what's going to be a really tough field.
He looks great. He's big, strong and happy. He
had a tough spring and we've been mindful of
that but the gap between the spring and now is
just about ideal because he needed to catch his
breath after the Cox Plate and the Melbourne
Cup, which were both pretty tough runs." As for
yesterday’s workout, O'Brien added: "Damien
was very pleased, as was I. We had a lovely
surface here this morning and he stretched out
nicely. Fitness-wise, he couldn't be better and
he's ready to go to the races.”

Oliver content with drawMeanwhile, Damien Oliver was happy enough
with Russian Camelot’s barrier two draw. "It's not
a bad draw for him, there are some good chances
drawn around us and certainly a better draw
than we had in the Cox Plate (where he finished
third from barrier 14), so hopefully he can get his
chance to show his best," Oliver told Racing.com.
"The fact that it is at Moonee Valley, 15 runners, we
don't often get a capacity field like that, so it looks
an intriguing race that will be a great spectacle.
You're never overconfident, but I am confident I
am on a good horse that is going to have a chance
of winning."
Walker excited for Shout The Bar ride
Michael Walker is hopeful that Shout The Bar
(Not A Single Doubt) will be in contention at the
finish of the All-Star Mile, rating her “a top-seven
chance”. The jockey will have his first ride on the
Empire Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) winner on
Saturday, with Shout The Bar bidding to improve
on her first-up third in the Frances Tressady
Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) last month. "She is just so
tough," Walker told Racing.com. “She gives her
all. She leaves it out there on the track. She'll never
leave a stone unturned.” Shout The Bar has drawn
barrier three for the $5m contest and Walker
added: "Sometimes in a big race, draws can win it.
It is pretty deep but her run the other day (in the
Frances Tressady Stakes) was really good and she
comes on with racing. She definitely deserves her
spot in the race. She's there to win. In my mind,
she's a top-seven chance."
Impecunious set for Phar LapNew Zealand import Impecunious (Sacred
Falls) is set to take her place in Saturday’s
Phar Lap Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) at Rosehill.
The Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young-trained
filly finished a luckless fourth in the Angus
Armanasco Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Caulfield
last month and Busuttin believes she is in great
shape to notch a first black-type win. “She is
excellent. We are not going to take any chances
with her, but she is 100 per cent good to go,”
Busuttin said. “She worked up with Rich Hips
this morning and was terrific, so we are on track
for Saturday.”
Doncaster next for Aegon The Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman-
trained Aegon (Sacred Falls) is having his
autumn plans assessed after finishing a
disappointing sixth in the Randwick Guineas
(Gr 1, 1600m) on Saturday. Aegon entered
the contest unbeaten, having won some high-
class races including the New Zealand 2000
Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and Hobartville Stakes
(Gr 2, 1400m), and Forsman believes he
struggled with the two-week back up from the
Hobartville. “It was a pretty flat run,” Forsman
said. “We weren’t quite sure what to make of it,
but we are thankful that he has come through it
unscathed. All we can put it down to is that he
didn’t handle for the first time in his life having
to run on a two-week back-up. We have always
kept him fresh and it’s pretty obvious the reason
why. He is fine and we will give him a quiet few
days and then reassess our options.” Baker and
Forsman are now leaning towards skipping the
Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) on Saturday-
week and running in the Doncaster Mile (Gr 1,
1600m) next month. “Realistically we are more
leaning towards just running in the Doncaster,
but we are not getting too carried away with
plans just yet,” Forsman added.
Sydney assignment for EntriviereThe Jamie Richards-trained Entriviere (Tavistock)
will be given her chance to shine across the Tasman
after a dominant victory in Sunday’s King’s Plate
(Gr 3, 1200m) at Ellerslie. The Sapphire Stakes (Gr
2, 1200m) on April 10 has emerged as a probable
target for the four-year-old mare, who has won
five of her six starts. “That would be a nice race for
her. It is set weights and penalties for fillies and
mares. She has got a wicked turn of foot and she
does seem to handle a bit of cut in the ground,”
Richards told Racing HQ. “We believe she is a
Group 1 horse in the making and we would like
to give her the opportunity to show herself off. I
just love the way she pins the ears back and tries
100 per cent. You can’t train that. It is either with
them or it’s not, and she is doing a super job. She
has won five of her six starts and probably with a
little bit of luck would be undefeated. She is going
really well and we think she is a high-class mare.”
Young Werther set for Alister ClarkYoung Werther (Tavistock) will continue his
campaign towards a potential start in the
Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) when he lines
up in the Alister Clark Stakes (Gr 2, 2040m) at
Moonee Valley on Saturday. The Danny O'Brien-
trained three-year-old finished third in the
Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) last spring and has
since run unplaced in the Autumn Stakes (Gr
2, 1400m) and Autumn Classic (Gr 2, 1800m).
Providing Young Werther runs well on Saturday,
he is likely to head to Sydney to run in the Tulloch
Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) at Rosehill on March 27, a
week ahead of the Australian Derby at Randwick.
"He's been building," O'Brien said. "He wasn't
bad the other day. He was on and off the bridle
throughout the race then his last 100 metres was
terrific. Getting to 2040 metres on Saturday is
going to be a big positive for him. He'd need to win
or fight it out with Cherry Tortoni to justify going
to Sydney, otherwise we can go to Adelaide."
Explosive Jack on ATC Derby pathThe Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained
Explosive Jack (Jakkalberry) will aim to cement
himself as a bona fide Australian Derby
contender when lining up in the Alister Clark
Stakes. Explosive Jack trounced his rivals in the
Tasmanian Derby (Listed, 2200m) last month
and Maher believes he is on the right track for
a start in the Derby. “Explosive Jack is quite
forward and rounded now,” he told Racing.com.
“He’s got a bit of confidence about him that
horse so, depending on what Sydney throws
up, he’s on the right leg to go to the Derby there.
He seems to be going the right way. There are a
good few horses all at that level. They are three-
year-old stayers that we’ve given time to, and
they are just coming to hand now.”

Pippie on course for Galaxy swansongDual Group 1 winner Pippie (Written Tycoon)
is set to have her final start as a racehorse in The
Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m) on March 20 before being
sold at the Inglis Chairman’s Sale in May. The
five-year-old mare finished sixth in last month’s
Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m)
and has come through the race well enough to
have a final crack at winning her third Group
1 before beginning her career as a broodmare.
"We always had The Galaxy in the back of our
mind, we wanted to see how we came through
the Lightning and the jump-out this morning,
so it's full steam ahead," said her trainer Chris
Meagher. "That was her last decent gallop, if she
does anything it might be on Saturday morning,
but it wouldn't be much. (Damian Lane) was
just happy with the way she did it (yesterday).
She bounced, put herself in the lead, and
extended without him asking her to do it. He
came back in and said you'd be mad to stop,
certainly have a crack. Then she will get ready
for the sale and then hopefully be a very, very
good broodmare."
Cumani stablemates set to clash at SandownMatt Cumani is hoping to learn more about
two of his stayers as they line up against
each other in the Ladbrokes Back Yourself
Handicap (2400m) at Sandown today. Doroza
(Medaglia D'Oro) is trying the trip for the first
time on his 30th career start, while Tarn’s
Prince (Unencumbered) drops back in class
after finishing unplaced in the Lord Reims
Stakes (Gr 3, 2600m) last month. "Doroza's
been in a while, but he's very fit so it's probably
not a bad time to try him," Cumani said. "I've
been very happy with what he's done for us
this campaign. He's gone from a horse last
year that was struggling a little bit to suddenly
being up to city class and running good races.
It would be great if we could eke out a little
bit more improvement and maybe the step up
in distance will allow that." On Tarn’s Prince,
Cumani added: “He's an interesting horse. I
still haven't worked him out in terms of his
distance. I'm just needing to find out a bit
more about him by racing him in the lowest
class possible."
Kisukano after second Jewel crown Michael Nolan is hoping Kisukano (Bel Esprit)
can follow up her win in the $500,000 QTIS
Jewel 2YO Plate (1200m) last year with a
victory in the three-year-old contest over the
same distance at the Gold Coast on Saturday.
Kisukano upset $1.20 favourite Rothfire
(Rothesay) in the contest 12 months ago and
Nolan is hoping for a similar performance this
weekend. “At the time, everyone was talking
about Rothfire and we were just going there as
a second guess, I suppose you could say,” Nolan
told Racing Queensland. Kisukano will need to
bounce back from a fourth-placed effort at the
Sunshine Coast last start if she is going to finish
in contention. “Our aim has always been to
win the 3YO Jewel,” Nolan said. “The plan was
to win first-up on Saturday and we obviously
didn’t but in saying that, we still ran well, jockey
Mark Du Plessis was happy with the horse and
we are still on track.”
Scott shows signs of recovery Brett Scott is awake and talking after being
placed in an induced coma last Wednesday
having been kicked in the head by a horse.
Scott suffered a fractured skull and required
plastic surgery after the incident, but wife
Kylie provided a positive update yesterday.
"The nurses rang me this morning to say he
was being moved into the ward, and I said,
'What's the update', and she said, 'Well he's
talking' and I said, 'Oh, God, what'? because
our daughter went in last night and said he was
opening his eyes and not really responsive,"
Kylie Scott told Racing.com. "To be talking this
morning is incredible. I'm going in at 5:30pm
this afternoon, so hopefully he recognises
me. I don't know what to expect. Everything is
looking positive and he's answering basic yes
and no questions, but he is still a bit confused
as to what year it is and stuff like that."
Parish cleared for race returnCory Parish has been cleared to return to race
riding and could be back in action by Sunday,
having been out since March last year after
suffering a back injury. Racing Victoria’s chief
doctor Gary Zimmerman gave the Group
1-winning jockey the all-clear to return
yesterday, with Sunday’s Yarra Valley meeting
being lined up as a likely starting point. "It's
just a matter of getting back into the swing of
it," Parish told Racing.com. "I would say Yarra
Valley on Sunday (is my likely return date).
It's a little bit close to get rides at Kilmore (on
Saturday). It's a matter of trying to see what I
can get when I can. My body is feeling well, I
feel on the job. It's very competitive out there
at the minute. It's not going to be easy to break
back in. Being out for so long, it will be like
starting from scratch again. I've just got to work
my way back up."
Kennewell in no rush to relocateMelbourne trainer Lloyd Kennewell is yet to
find a new home ahead of Caulfield closing its
training facilities. Kennewell has been looking
at a few locations but is yet to confirm his next
move. “We are still sitting pretty,” Kennewell
told Racing.com. “I’m just definitely riding it
out at the moment. There’s been a few locations
that we’ve looked at, but we are basically
holding our cards to our chest at the moment.
We are waiting for a few things to happen and
just seeing what option suits us best. We’ve got
a good team of young horses and we just want
to make sure that we secure the right place for
our future. We’ve got a little bit of time here, so
we will play it to the line and hopefully we can
make the right decision for everyone involved
in my team.”
Apprentice Ryan injured at KemblaApprentice jockey Brock Ryan fractured his leg
in a trackwork fall at Kembla Grange yesterday,
meaning he will cruelly miss the ride on
Jamaea (Headwater) in the Magic Night Stakes
(Gr 3, 1200m) on Saturday. Jamaea will bid to
secure a guaranteed spot in the Golden Slipper
(Gr 1, 1200m) when lining up at Rosehill but,
after partnering the filly on her previous three
starts, Ryan will be absent as he recovers from
a fractured tibia. He will see Racing NSW’s Dr
Duckworth next week for ongoing treatment
and is expected to be ruled out for at least six
weeks.

NEW ZEALAND
Miss Federer offered on Gavelhouse Plus
The unreserved auction of recently retired,
multiple stakes winner Miss Federer (Swiss Ace)
launched on Gavelhouse Plus yesterday and will
run through until 7pm (NZ) on Monday. Bred
by Greg Tomlinson’s Nearco Stud, Miss Federer
raced as an early two-year-old, finishing third
on her debut outing followed by back-to-back
victories, claiming the Welcome Stakes (Listed,
1000m) on her third start. Her race career
reaped victories in five of her 14 starts, four
of those at stakes level including the Taranaki
2YO Classic (Gr 3, 1200m). “Miss Federer was
an outstanding racehorse,” her trainer Andrew
Carston said. “She was precocious enough to
run early and be a stakes winner twice as a two-
year-old in the North and South Islands which
is always good, and then she was good enough
to come back at three and win two more Listed
races. Having selected her at Karaka and her
doing what she did really stamped me as a
trainer. Her most endearing attributes to me
were her constitution, she was as tough as old
boots and her will to win, she was exceptionally
brave and never said no to a dog fight.”
Vance hoping for another Royal performanceBob Vance is hoping Royal Performer
(Medicean) can secure another elite-level
victory when he contests the Bonecrusher NZ
Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Ellerslie on Saturday.
The eight-year-old gelding recorded Vance’s
first elite-level victory as a trainer when taking
out the Herbie Dyke Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at
Te Rapa last month, and the former jockey is
hoping for a repeat performance this weekend.
“I have experienced it quite a bit as a jockey
but winning a Group 1 as a trainer is totally
different,” said Vance, who trains in partnership
with his wife Jenny. “He has come through his
run in the Herbie Dyke really well. He had a
week off and has done a week of pace work, and
he is now back galloping. He is in good order. I
can’t fault him.”
Underdog tag no concern for ColeSteven Cole’s Iffie Shows (Showcasing) finished
fifth at huge odds in the New Zealand Derby
(Gr 1, 2400m), and the Byerley Park trainer
is hoping to do even better when Magneto
(Showcasing) contests the Sistema Stakes (Gr 1,
1200m) at Ellerslie this Saturday. Magneto has
improved with each start since finishing eighth
on debut in the Counties Bowl (Listed, 1100m)
in November. He finished third behind Quattro
Quinta (Darci Brahma) and Wolfgang (Puccini)
in the Wellesley Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at
Trentham, and three weeks later overturned
the same two horses in the Woburn Farm 2YO
Classic (Gr 3, 1200m) at New Plymouth. “We
put the side winkers on him for New Plymouth
and they really switched him on, and we went
there with plenty of confidence,” Cole said.
“He’s come on with the run again, and his work
on Saturday was superb really. Now we just
have to hope we get a good draw.”
New home for Marlborough CupThe Marlborough Cup (2000m) will have a
new home away from home this year when its
100th running is held at Riccarton tomorrow.
The Marlborough Racing Club was set to
celebrate the milestone event at its home track
of Waterlea last year, however, the Covid-19
enforced lockdown put a halt to those plans.
With the Marlborough track absent from the
racing calendar this season, club president
John O’Brien said he has been grateful to a
number of entities for assisting in getting the
Cup off the ground this year. “We are very
pleased to be able to run it with the support
from NZTR, the Canterbury Jockey Club, and
also the Amberley Racing Club,” O’Brien said.
The Marlborough Cup has played host to a
number of historical events, including David
Walsh breaking Lance O’Sullivan’s long held
record of number of wins by a jockey in New
Zealand. A record which was subsequently
broken recently by leading South Island hoop
Chris Johnson. Many trainers have also cut
their teeth competing in the race, including
Chris Waller, who won the 1999 running with
Ripon By (Beldale Lear).

HK: Whyte hopes barrier lessons will help Rainbow LightDouglas Whyte is optimistic a remedial course
in barrier manners will spark a performance
transformation in Rainbow Light (Outstrip)
when the Irish import tackles the first section of
the Class 4 Po Loi Handicap (1650m) at Happy
Valley today. Beaten 31 and a half lengths
when last behind Pakistan Friend (Not A Single
Doubt) at Sha Tin in January after rearing at
the start and missing the jump badly, Rainbow
Light was stood down from racing pending a
satisfactory barrier trial. “He’s had a few gate
issues – he’s the type of horse who’s his own
worst enemy,” the former champion jockey
said. “He stands ok, but he can get it (starting)
wrong and he can get left, as we saw last time. I
have opted to take him to the Valley just to take
him away from Sha Tin just to get him to think
differently and I’m hoping all the thought going
into this is going to pay off.”
HK: Lor Kinda keen on Cool chanceFrankie Lor is hoping Kinda Cool (Per
Incanto) can also benefit from a stint in
Conghua with a strong display in the second
section of Class 3 Baker Handicap (1200m).
“I just gave him a break and trialled him in
Conghua, he’s come back and he looks fine,”
Lor said. “He’s not a big, strong horse so I just
gave him an easy trial.” Jumping from barrier
ten under Zac Purton, the gelding will chase
his third win of the 2020/21 season. “This
horse needs a good gate and then he can run
good,” Lor said before pointing to Purton’s
record aboard the four-year-old. “But he’s
(Purton) won on him and I hope he can get a
good position from a wide draw.”

HK: Russian Emperor pleases connections ahead of DerbyAfter entering the 2021 Hong Kong Derby
(Listed, 2000m) fold with a dashing second at
79-1 in last month’s Hong Kong Classic Cup
(Listed, 1800m), Russian Emperor (Galileo)
took another crucial step toward Hong Kong’s
most prestigious race with a solid first-past-the-
post effort in a barrier trial at Sha Tin yesterday.
The regally bred colt out of star mare Atlantic
Jewel (Fastnet Rock) rolled past the post in
1m 35.69s (1600m, turf) under the urgings of
jockey Karis Teetan - much to the satisfaction
of trainer Douglas Whyte - ahead of fellow
Derby candidates Silver Express (Canford
Cliffs), Excellent Proposal (Exceed And Excel),
Packing Waltham (Wootton Bassett) and two-
time Australian Group 1 winner Shadow Hero
(Pierro). “He’s come on from his last run and
that trial today will probably just top him off -
he’s a big horse and he’s a colt still, so he’s going
to need every ounce of work that I can give
him. He’ll go home now and probably come on
slightly from that trial - it’s all systems go from
here on in,” Whyte said.

UK: Prize-money boost for Royal AscotAscot officials yesterday unveiled plans for a
beefed-up royal meeting featuring a 66 per cent
increase on prize-money from 2020. Course
bosses had hoped to offer £8 million (approx
AUD$14.41m) in prize-money for Royal Ascot
last year but the coronavirus pandemic took
its toll on finances, meaning the meeting was
staged for £3.61m. However, this year's fixture
– permanently expanded to seven-race cards
rather than six – will be worth £6m (approx.
AUD$10.81m). The meeting will be staged from
June 15-19 despite fleeting speculation last
month it may be delayed because of lockdown
restrictions in England being due to end the
following week.
UK: Gosden enters training partnership Five-time champion John Gosden is to become
the highest profile trainer in Britain to operate
under a shared licence when his son Thady's
papers are rubber-stamped by the British
Horseracing Authority. The new arrangement,
which could be in place by the start of the turf
season on March 27, recognises the growing
role played in the running of Clarehaven stables
by Thady, who recently completed his modules
at the British Racing School. He supervised
the running in Riyadh of last month's US$20
million Saudi Cup (1800m) winner Mishriff

The Grant and Alana Williams-
trained Celebrity Queen (Redoute’s
Choice) is the latest big-name entry
confirmed for the Inglis Chairman’s
Sale in May.
The four-year-old mare, who landed the
Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) in a dead-heat
with Portland Sky (Deep Field) before finishing
down the field in the Newmarket Handicap
(Gr 1, 1200m) last weekend, joins dual Group
1 winners Pippie (Written Tycoon) and
Danzdanzdance (Mastercraftsman) at the star-
studded sale.
Celebrity Queen has won seven of her 14
starts since making her debut in August 2019,
with her other career highlights including a
Group 3 success in the Colonel Reeves Stakes
(1100m) and a runner-up effort in November’s
Winterbottom Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m).
Bred and raced by Bob and Sandra Peters,
Celebrity Queen has achieved over $825,000
in prize-money and she will likely bid to
increase that total in the TJ Smith Stakes (Gr
1, 1200m) at Randwick on the first day of The
Championships on April 3, a little over a month
before the Chairman’s Sale begins at Riverside
on May 7.
Bob Peters admits it is with great reluctance
he is offering the exceptional mare for sale.
“I’d rather not be selling her and while I’m
retaining the dam, Celebrity Queen is going
to be a great opportunity for someone,’’ Peters
said.
“It’s quite a young family and as a breeder it
would excite me that her first four dams are by
Redoute’s Choice, More Than Ready, Marscay
and Sir Tristram.”
Celebrity Queen is by leading broodmare
sire Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) and is out of
the stakes-winning mare Celebrity Miss (More
Than Ready), herself out of dual Group 1 winner
Miss Margaret (Marscay).
The sale will also feature Blue Diamond
Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) runner-up Lankan Star
(Nicconi), last year’s Chairman's Stakes (Gr 3,
1000m) winner Mildred (Hinchinbrook) and
Courchevel (Snitzel) - an unraced half-sister
to Winx (Street Cry) who carries a Capitalist
(Written Tycoon) pregnancy.
Additionally, the catalogue is set to include
mares in foal to the likes of leading sires I Am
Invincible (Invincible Spirit), Written Tycoon
(Iglesia) and Zoustar (Northern Meteor),
as well as a rare southern hemisphere-time
pregnancy to exciting young sire Night Of
Thunder (Dubawi).
In the past two editions of the Chairman’s
Sale, the average price for race fillies and race
mares is over $545,000, while three of the
four highest-priced pregnant mares sold at
public auction in Australasia in 2019 and 2020
were sold at the Chairman’s Sale - Maastricht
(Mastercraftsman) for $2.25m, and Srikandi
(Dubawi) and In Her Time (Time Thief)
fetching $2m each.
Inglis bloodstock consultant Harry Bailey
said: “It is an absolute honour to be given
the opportunity by Mr and Mrs Peters to
sell Celebrity Queen on their behalf at the
Chairman’s Sale.
“With her joining Pippie in the sale, the
2021 Chairman’s Sale is going to be the home of
the best speed mares that Australia has to offer
to the world, so it’s very exciting.
“We are very proud of what Chairman’s has
become and after the virtual sale of 2020, we
are looking forward to a fantastic sale back at
Riverside in May.
“There is great quality among the entries for
the Australian Weanling Sale and the Australian
Broodmare Sale, as well as a big representation
of yearlings in the HTBA May Sale, so it’s going
to be a fantastic ten days at Riverside in May.’’

Dual Group 1-winning two-year-
old King’s Legacy, a son of breed-
shaping stallion and sire of sires
Redoute’s Choice (Danehill),
has been retired to stand at Coolmore later this
year.
The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained colt
ran a creditable fifth in Saturday’s Randwick
Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), but connections have
elected to call time on the valuable three-year-
old’s racing career.
A $1.4 million Magic Millions Gold Coast
Yearling Sale purchase by agent James Harron
in 2019, King’s Legacy clinched a stud career
with dynamic performances in the ATC
Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) and ATC
Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) last year,
prompting Coolmore to buy into the horse.
“It was a great effort by King’s Legacy
on Saturday and jockey Tom Marquand
reported that had he not been held up at a
crucial stage in the straight he could have
made things very interesting,” Harron said
yesterday.
“King’s Legacy has been a tremendous
horse for us and we could not be more excited
looking forward to his future at Coolmore Stud.
“Some of Australia’s biggest breeders are
involved with this colt and he will be strongly
supported with outstanding mares throughout
his stud career."
The three-time winner is out of the stakes-
placed mare Breakfast In Bed (Hussonet),
making him a three-quarter brother to the now
pensioned Arrowfield sire Not A Single Doubt
(Redoute’s Choice).
“King’s Legacy is aptly named and is
everything Australia is looking for in a young
stallion prospect. He won the Sires’ Produce and
then, after we joined the ownership, he added the
Champagne Stakes at Royal Randwick,” Coolmore
Australia principal Tom Magnier said.
“We’re delighted he will now take his place
on our roster. He’s by an outstanding sire of
sires and has an exceptional pedigree and an
imposing physique.
“He will be heavily supported by both
Coolmore and some of Australia’s leading
breeders who remain in the ownership."
A service fee for King’s Legacy will be
announced at a later date.
