Who we are and what we do
We are parents of children with autism and other complex health issues and are the founders of
Waltham Forest Parent Forum (www.walthamforestparentforum.com) which is a parent
participation group with over 300 parent / carer members and 250 professional members made up
of schools, local councillors, borough officers, health professionals and other voluntary and charity
groups. With working backgrounds in HR and teaching we have developed training for our forum and
other local groups and organisations in our participation network by drawing on our personal skills
and experience to provide practical and original training solutions. Our training is participative,
bespoke to the needs of your group and fun. Most of all the parents and groups we work with value
the fact that training and support is delivered by a parent just like them who understands the issues
that parents of a disabled child face.
Our philosophy is to share our skills with other groups to help them develop their parent
participation voice. We believe that participation can and will change outcomes and improve
services for families and are committed to supporting the work of parent forums in any way we can.
Therefore our charges for training sessions for parent forums aim to reflect this ethos.

Short summary of service
What we do
Rosalind Grainger and Eileen Condon’s friendly, informal workshops help parents/carers
communicate effectively with the numerous professionals (eg teachers, social workers, therapists
and doctors) they meet/phone/write/talk to on a regular basis.
Participants will discover how to overcome their personal obstacles to positive communication and
learn simple techniques to get their point across.
Why we know what we’re talking about
As successful journalists, Rosalind Grainger and Eileen Condon produced stories about everything
from airplane crashes to Zumba. Their articles appeared in national titles such as The Times, The
Daily Express, The Daily Mail, Woman, OK! Bella and SHE. Then, in 2006, their own lives took a
dramatic and unexpected turn. Rosalind gave birth to a little girl with complex needs: Eileen was
diagnosed with cancer. They’d written about disability and ill-health countless times, they’d
interviewed scores of experts, patients and carers. But suddenly the story was no longer work. It was
personal.
Who we are
Rosalind is a freelance writer and psychotherapist in training. She is a parent participation associate
and co-founder of Hackney’s parent/carer forum. Eileen is a published author, journalism teacher
and patient liaison officer for a leading health charity.

Short summary of service
My 30 years expertise arises from three inter-related experiences: as a pragmatic long-term parent
carer and campaigner, as an enabling, active learning trainer and facilitator: and as a experienced
strategist creating solutions and partnerships (at local, regional and national level) to jointly meet
the aspirations and challenges of families of children with additional needs. I offer a range of
workshops and bespoke facilitation and training. With my consultant support I seek to encourage,
equip and empower parent carers and practitioners alike in order to enable young people, siblings
and their parents to reach their fullest potential and quality of life. This includes working to shape
the systems, services and attitudes so that together we make a real difference.
In the last five years I have worked closely with Kim Aumann, former director of Amaze Brighton &
Hove, and together we have written and piloted “Insiders’ Guide”, a 6 session parent support
course. The experience of Insiders Guide enables parent carers to process aspects of their personal
journey, practice new skills and grow their resilience for the journey ahead. (More information to
follow).

Strengthening Parent Carer Participation
Types of training and learning development opportunities on offer
I was elected parent carer representative in 1995, and was one of the founder parents for Amaze
Brighton, and award winning parent lead charity. I set up their Parent Carers’ Council in 2007. I
currently work on many different projects at regional and national level. These endeavours are
always solutions focussed, build good practice, supportive of disabled young people having their
own voice heard, and encourage partnership working across sectors and providers.
My preference is to shape training around the needs of each group, most commonly including these
themes:-
Getting Your Voice Heard: for parent carers making the journey from being an advocate for their
own family, to being a effective member of a parent carer group. 2 consecutive short days
Participation and Co-production: key aspects of understanding types and stages of participation and
top tips about how to making a difference through effective participation. 1 or 2 day course
Keeping on Keeping on: this includes reviewing progress, celebrating successes, tackling weak areas
and setting action plans that will influence and make a difference. 1 day course
Negotiation and managing tricky situations: Looking at basic principles, dynamics, roles and
solution finding. 1 day
Insiders Guide Training: (Kim and Carrie) Working closely with a local commissioner to train a group
of experienced parents and practitioner pairs of facilitators who will deliver the Insiders Guide
parent carer support course in their local area. A DVD is available to introduce Insiders’ Guide.
Training for trainers is 3 days training: each course is 6 morning or afternoon sessions, and it is a fully
manualised course. Our evidence is that the parent/practitioner approach and Insiders Guide have a
significant impact on building parent carers’ resilience and positivity, and parent/practitioner trust. It
is one tool for effecting cultural change in the dynamics between providers and service users.

Relevant Experience
I worked in Tower Hamlets Social Services since qualifying as a Social Worker in 1980 and left in the
autumn of 1997.
Since that time I have worked as a Freelance Facilitator, Trainer & Consultant.
As you can appreciate I have worked on many different projects over the last fifteen years and have
been focusing my efforts more recently on parent participation. I am the Independent Chair of the
Parents in Partnership group (PipN) in Newham and have developed a co-chairing arrangement with 2 of
the parent representatives. This group began under Aiming High but now has a wider remit and meets
on a six weekly cycle.
I worked with a number of SureStart Children’s Centres - enabling frontline staff to deliver training
for and with parents, consulting with parents and carers and developing local partnership working. I
also worked on raising community awareness of Domestic Violence on the Isle of Dogs alongside a
parent, who wanted to do something in response to a tragic death in their community.
I have designed and delivered training courses on Carers’ Awareness & Assessments, Disability
Awareness and the Disability Discrimination Act, Diversity and Effective Team Working & Team
Building.
I piloted the Skills for Care training in Newham for front line staff on Carer Awareness, co–delivering
with carers after providing them with the necessary training and support and co-creating the course.
In the last 5-6 years I helped establish two borough wide forums for carers one in Newham
(Newham Carers United) and the other in Camden (Camden Carers’ Voice) and supported carer
representation at a strategic level in both boroughs.
I have worked with two (CAF supported) parent and carer forums -Southwark PCC on a number of
strategic planning away days and workshops including a briefing on the impact of personalisation
and most recently assisted the Lewisham PCF to host their first awareness raising conference.
Partner in direct roots
In 1999 I joined 3 freelance colleagues in setting up a partnership called direct roots community
consultants pooling our resources & talents. In April 2004 we restructured and now Siobhan Lanigan
& myself are the founding partners in direct roots (www.directroots.co.uk) working with a number of
associates. We specialise in capacity building for the voluntary sector, community involvement and
consultation, evaluation as well as organisational development &facilitation.
We are an approved NCVO consultancy.
Gift Time I was a Trustee of the Tower Project in Tower Hamlets for children and people with disability aged 5-
45 for over ten years and also I assist a friend with recruiting and managing his team of Personal
Assistants as part of his independent living package.

We are both parent carers of disabled children as well as experienced professionals in the fields of health and social care and business management. Training is an integral part of developing and improving skills and knowledge with that in mind, Sialyn Training can offer both generic and bespoke training packages for Parent/Carers and Health and Social Care Staff from Carer through to Manager. Sialyn Training International aims to “smooth the fit” between training/development, quality performance and consistency of approaches. In order to attain successful outcomes a balance between development and performance must be bridged. Sialyn Training aims to provide that balance and to “fine tune” Carer’s understanding, development and consistency to ensure that Quality really does matter.
