Community Development
CVA and Croydon NHS working withNurture Development are pilotingABCD in Thornton Heath, here’s thestory so far…..
Cormac Russell, ABCD Institute
Festival Day in Thornton Heath-Sept 18, 2011
And on the day people were invited to share their gifts….
Why have a meeting when you can have a party? (Jim Diers)
There are more gifts in every community than anyone can know…
Through learning conversations, connections are made, andtrust is built, community building-one-to-ones…
Local citizen connectors, spoke with neighbours and mapped thelocal assets: peoples gifts, associations, social spaces etc
A giving tree was filled with peoples names and mobile numbers-new connectors with ideas for building community….
Everybody in Thornton Heath cares about something enough to actupon it, we just need to ask. Start with passions, not problems…
Being intentional about the process of engagement, mapping:a) associations; b) capacity/contribution and then invitation
Place matters….
Where do live?
What do you dream?
What are your skills and talents?
What formal or informal groups are you part of?
What gifts and talents would you like to share?
Wow! That many? What would happen if we had theseconversations with everyone in Thornton Heath?
The art of conversation, conversations matter….
Young people are leaders of today, not tomorrow, we invite them in.The message on the day: Thornton Heath needs you, we can not dothis without you…
As people passed by they saw the connectors &stopped for a chat….then one thing led to another..
And they stayed for the vision….
This is Shirley with her neighbour...Shirley is a neighbourhoodconnector
The connectors want to discover hidden treasure and buildrelationships….
They had already knocked on doors, and heard peoples storieslike Mr and Mrs Ahmed…..
Paul Macey who is a wonderful Community Builder, and isfacilitating the process on behalf of Croydon Voluntary Actionand Croydon NHS sat with Peggy and heard her story….
And Peggy and Mr & Mrs Ahmed were connected
The connectors have experienced the power of connecting people…
And they have been mapping local associations too….
And seeing the huge potential for connecting these assets also….
And the older people will have plenty to teach the kids as well…
Bingo!!!!
News flash: the streets of Thornton Heath were filled today withyoung people (and the young at heart) making fun…and Community
The glass is half full…..
