ARCHITECTURE:The Thrikkakara temple inclusive of its outer walls and outer courtyard has an area of eleven acres.There is an elephant shed towards the front of the temple.

The Sreekovil, constructed out of granite stone is circular in shape. The facing mandapa is fairly

lar e. A Yakshi has been installed in it.

LEGEND: Bali, the king of the Asuras, was the son of

Veerochana and Devamba.There was peace and prosperityeverywhere during his reign. He expanded his kingdom and

usurped the heaven. The vanquished Devas then complained to

their protector Vishnu, who assured them that he himself

would restore the authority of Devas.

Bali, at the behest of his Guru Sukracharya decided to conduct

the Ashwamedha Yagam. During the Yagam, Vishnu, in the

guise of a small Brahmin boy - Vamana, appeared before Baliand asked for three paces of land. Bali, who had vowed not to

refuse anyone, promptly granted the wish, even ignoring the

warnings of his guru.

Vamana measured all the worlds and the sky with two paces.

Then, Bali offered himself for the third pace and was thus

banished to the Patala.

DEITIES/SHRINES:

The main deity is Lord Vishnu in the form of

Vamana.

In the outer layer of the temple there is Lord Siva, Sri

Parvathy, Sri Durgadevi, Sri Ganapathy and Sri

Subramanyan.

The other deities are Sri Bhagavathi, Sri Ayappan

and Gopalakrishnan.

LOCATION: It is situated in Thrikkakara, a village

panchayat near Kochi in the state of Kerala.

FESTIVAL: Onam is a festival of flowers. It falls in the month of Shravan or Bhadon

(August-September). During this period the harvest is over and the farmers will be in a festive mood

with their granaries full. Onam celebrates the golden age of King Mahabali. The festival is to welcome

the spirit of King Mahabali, and to assure him that his people are happy and wish him well.
