SOME OF MY BEST FRIENDS — As a young boy, my family lived on the west side of Bellefontaine, and at that time one of the elementary schools was also on the west side of town. Western Elementary was the name of said school, which I attended up through grade five. No, I didn’t drop out, but “graduated” up to middle school for grades six through eight, just in case you were wondering. At the time, the west side of town was comprised mostly of people of Afri-can-American descent. ( Just for the re-cord, I am not now, nor was I then, com-
fortable referring to a person as being black. Political correctness be damned).
Anyway, during my tenure at elementary school, I amassed an enormous number of friends who were people of color. We had classes together, had gym together, ate lunches side by side, and even played little league baseball together. Skin col-or held no boundaries as we hung out, played kick the can, and rode our bikes around town. Let me remind you that all of this took place in the mid to late 60’s, a time in which there was inordinate amount of civil unrest in other parts of our country, the likes of which seem to be happening today, albeit 50 years later. When are we ever going to learn?
Today, half a century having gone by, I am still in contact with many of my friends of yesterday. Occasionally I have the opportunity to talk with them on the phone, or send them an email. Not much has changed in our circle other than the fact that we are all growing older, one day at a time. We talk about the state of the world or country, our families, our par-ents, should they still be alive, and if or when one plans on retiring. You know,
the usual stuff.
The thing that really saddens me is that we, as a country, still live with the mindset that many of our fellow humans are infe-rior or don’t measure up to the standards we think they ought to. Why, please tell me, is this 0.K? A living being, regard-less of color, regardless of gender, regard-less of education or occupation, should have the same exact rights as the person standing next to them — NO EXCEP-TIONS!!
Far too many people should get their heads out of their backsides and catch up with the rest of the sensibly minded human race. We are all in this togeth-er and until we realize and deal with the problem, which seems to have slogged on now since I don’t know when, well, let me just say that I’m ashamed of the behavior. Rant over.
Man, I miss my friends -Kevin
