NeilRo s e n t h a lRe l a t i o n s h i p s

Dear Neil: Some time ago, youwrote a very impressive article ti-tled “Secrets Every Man ShouldK n ow. ” I still have a copy in mypossession. In it was advice youoffered men about how to be effec-tive in their relationships withwomen — essentially, how tomake love to a woman in thebroadest definition of that word.

I am sure every woman wouldlove to have the equivalent advice

about how to be the best spouse, lover, friend and companion witha man. Would you please write acolumn titled “Secrets that everywoman should know”?

— Wanting Advice in Welling-ton, New Zealand

Dear New Zealand: H ow

about two columns on this sub-ject? This one will address ro-mance and closeness, and nextweek I will offer suggestions re-garding men and sex.

Many women adopt a passiveattitude toward romance; theytend to think of courtship, ro-mance and seduction as some-thing a man does to them. It’s aman’s job to woo you, make youfeel valued, bring you flowers, open doors for you, complimentyou, wine and dine you, and se-duce you. So my first recommen-

dation is to make romance morereciprocal. This means that youalso would woo him, court him, make him feel special, and act ashis seductress, not just the se-d u c e d.

Touch is the best aphrodisiac. It helps us be closer. If you’re nottouching each other a lot, your re-lationship is unlikely to feel hot orpassionate, and both of you willnotice that the connection youonce had has waned. Expressyour love physically every daythrough touch, hugs, kisses, cud-

dling or holding hands. The heart of me feeling val-

ued by you is whether you are re-sponsive to what I say. Therefore,if I say something is important tome, make it important to you also.

Create time to be alone to-gether every week, and treat thattime as sacred. Make your rela-tionship a top priority in your life.

When you talk with him, lookinto his eyes.

T h e re ’s an art to giving ap-preciation. Learn that art.

Editor’s note: This is the first part ofa two-part series.
