The famous “Horse Marines” of the Marine Mounted Detachment assigned to the International Legation at Peking, China, in the 1930s. They posed before a large building on the Imperial Wall where heavy fighting by Marines had taken place during the 1900 Boxer Rebellion. Throughout the first three decades of the 20 th century, Marine duty in China was highly desirable. Even privates reportedly lived like “kings” in a very inexpensive and reception environment.
