Darwin
The Territory’s tropical capital, Darwin, is buzzing with activity amid a region rich in nature experiences. The multicultural city is an exciting blend of markets, museums, nightlife and natural attractions. Enjoy outdoor harbour side dining, alongside an unforgettable Darwin sunset. Explore the treasures of both Kakadu and Litchfield national Parks. Travel further and visit Tiwi Islands, Arnhem Land and Katherine.
litchfield National Park and Katherine
South of Darwin, Litchfield national Park is 1,500 square kilometres of largely untouched landscape. The landscape is so diverse you will be taking in unusual rock formations and breathtaking waterfalls one minute, then checking out magnetic termite mounds the next.
The vast Katherine region is full of hidden secrets and will have you spoilt for adventure choices. Katherine (nitmiluk) Gorge is the area’s major attraction, where you can see the Katherine River sliced through towering sandstone cliffs to form the famous gorge. Tour around the vast network of rivers and escarpments, visit a cattle station or explore nearby national parks and reserves.
Kakadu National Park and Arnhem land
Kakadu national Park is a natural treasure. Amid the overwhelming 20,000 kilometre area, there’s so much to see and do. Take delight in indigenous culture and cruise the waterways through waterlilies, teeming with animals and birdlife. Waterfalls dot the entire region and if you’re keen for a dip, head to the plunge pools of Jim Jim and Twin Falls. Back on land, discover the indigenous rock art of nourlangie Rock and Ubirr, they are some of the best examples of Aboriginal rock art found in the world today.
Take a look inside Aboriginal-owned Arnhem Land for an authentic taste of indigenous culture, preserved in the most beautiful of settings. Experience the best fishing in one of the most unspoilt areas in the world. Appreciate the breathtaking landscape that offers everything from towering escarpments to wild coastlines and deserted islands. See the work of the small population in a local indigenous art gallery.

Darwin is a melting pot of people and cultures with a unique and friendly laidback lifestyle. More than just the gateway to the Top End, it’s an enticing blend of international city conveniences, historic attractions and nature experiences. Darwin captures the essence of the tropics.
Discover Darwin’s museums and art galleries after indulging your appetite in the city’s many restaurants. Tackle world-class fishing or cruising on Darwin Harbour, as well as viewing some of the most spectacular sunsets.
Enjoy the diversity carried from Darwin’s past. Head to a museum, visit an historical reserve or any number of attractions that highlight the progress of the region. From the pioneering days to early settlement, the mining booms, war years and the impact of cyclones, discover how these have shaped this tropical city.
In town for the weekend? Head down to Parap and nightcliff for open air markets. The atmospheric sunset markets between May and October at Mindil Beach on Thursday and Sunday evening are a treat. Chat with the stall holders over locally made arts and crafts, see street performers, bush poetry and stock-whip cracking. Pick up some great tasty food as well.
