HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, CITY OF VAUGHAN! Dorothea Helms
Connects people and ideas, and can be reached at [email protected]
COMMUNITY PROFILE
Twenty- ve years ago, on January 1, 1991, the Vaughan was designated a City – the rst City in York Region –and since that time, the municipality has experienced phenomenal growth. In fact, Vaughan is one of the fastest-growing municipalities in Canada. Today, Vaughan has a population of over 320,000 (that number was 100,000 in 1991) and includes the communities of Concord, Kleinburg, Maple, ornhill and Woodbridge. A microcosm of the demographics that enrich the Greater Toronto Area, the City of Vaughan is a multicultural community where 99 di erent languages are spoken. Vaughan is also home to more than 11,200 businesses and thousands of organizations. is progressive City is a major contributor to the success of York Region and the GTA.
Over the years, Vaughan has also undergone tremendous change. Current major city-building initiatives currently include the Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital, the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre and the Toronto-York Spadina subway extension. In April, City of Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua, Town of Richmond Hill Mayor Dave Barrow and City of Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti met to discuss working together to move the Yonge Street subway extension forward. Watch for an information and action day to inform transit users along the Yonge corridor of the current status of the extension, and to encourage them to make their support heard at the federal and provincial levels of government.
In January of this year, Vaughan joined the ranks of world-class cities, when it became the second in Canada to received an award from the World Council on City Data (WCCD). is ISO Platinum Award recognizes Vaughan’s high standards in collecting and using research as part of providing excellence to residents, helping to create a smart, sustainable, resilient and prosperous city. Among the other international cities that received this certi cation in 2015 were Barcelona, Melbourne, Shanghai, Johannesburg, London, Los Angeles and Dubai.
Mayor Bevilacqua said, “Vaughan is leading the way in Canada and abroad as it reaches new heights in international recognition. My vision for Vaughan has always been clear – to build a city where people can live happy, healthy and ful lling lives. As a member of the Global Cities Indicators Facility International Advisory Board – the organization that built this rst ISO Standard for cities – I championed the importance and value of being part of this global initiative because it provides Vaughan with the opportunity to collaborate with and learn from more than 250 cities worldwide. Achieving ISO platinum certi cation by the World Council on City Data demonstrates our commitment to building a world-class city as we are one of two cities representing Canada on a global scale.”
e Village of Maple is centred around the intersection of Major Mackenzie Drive and Keele Street. Many of the new home communities being built in the area are inspired by its original Victorian-style village. Both Vaughan’s City Hall and Canada’s Wonderland are located in Maple, which is known for its eager volunteer sector. A model of diversity, Maple is also home to one of the largest mosques in Canada.
e Village of Kleinburg is known for being home to the renowned McMichael Canadian Art Collection, which boasts works by the Group of Seven. Kleinburg also boasts the Kortright Centre for Conservation and is the location for the beloved annual Binder Twine Festival, where visitors enjoy great food, unique crafts, plus fun entertainment and activities. A trip to Kleinburg’s main street is a treat. Small one-of-a-kind boutiques, ne-dining restaurants, European-inspired cafés and luxury spas and more create the Village’s irresistible ambience. Situated atop the Humber River Ridge, the Village also o ers hiking and cycling opportunities amid breathtaking views.
Wherever your residential destination in Vaughan, you will nd appealing new home communities with a variety of home styles from prestigious builders. Above all, you will enjoy an enviable quality of life.
Vaughan 25th Anniversary EventsShare your story! In celebration of this milestone in the City’s history, residents and visitors are invited to share special memories, stories and photos of their Vaughan experiences, at http://vaughan25.ca/our-stories/ – help to create a special and unique history of this amazing municipality.

MAKING VAUGHAN A GREENER PLACE
VAUGHAN PROJECTS TO BENEFIT FROM FEDERAL GAS TAX FUND
For more than a decade, the City of Vaughan has participated in 20-Minute Makeover – an annual environmen-
tal awareness program in support of Earth Day. More than 16,800 participants from 52 schools, 13 businesses, five community groups and 16 City of Vaughan departments took 20 minutes to collect litter in Vaughan during the event on Friday, April 22. It brings people together for a common cause to help make our communities greener and cleaner places.
This initiative supports goals outlined in Green Directions Vaughan, the Community
Sustainability and Environmental Master Plan, including being leaders in advocacy and education on sustainability issues and significantly reducing the amount of waste the City generates. This year’s event was held in partnership with Pitch-In Canada, a national non-profit group dedicated to the preservation and sustainable growth of our natural ecosystems and communities.
Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua participated in a kick-off event today in Ward 2 with stu-dents and staff from St. Andrews Catholic Elementary School. Vaughan Councillors also attended community cleanup events at
schools in their respective wards: St. David Catholic Elementary School (Ward 1), St. Emily Catho-lic Elementary School (Ward 3), St. Cecilia Catholic Elementary School (Ward 4) andWestminster Public School (Ward 5).
For more information about 20-Minute Makeover and to learn about Vaughan’s envi-ronmental initiatives, visit vaughan.ca/environment or email [email protected].
As the City of Vaughan continues to grow, so does the demand on existing community infrastructure, including
roads, sidewalks and buildings. The federal Gas Tax Fund helps address the rising cost of maintaining, revitalizing and building new infrastructure by providing predictable and long-term funding that supports fundamental city-building mechanisms including job cre-ation and economic stimulus.
In 2016, the City will receive $8.765 million
from the federal Gas Tax Fund that will be di-rected to more than three dozen projects. These include sidewalk repairs, bridge rehabilitation and improvements to hiking trails. Funds will also support stormwater management facili-ties and construction of the new Civic Centre Resource Library. A portion of the federal gas tax funding will be invested in the Pavement Management Program which focuses on main-taining appropriate service levels on the City’s existing road network. In addition, funding will be used to build new multi-use paths that pro-
mote alternate modes of travel such as walking and cycling.
The Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) delivers the federal Gas Tax Fund to all Ontario municipalities, except Toronto, twice a year, on a per capita basis. In 2016, AMO will transfer $617 million to municipalities to in-vest in hundreds of projects.
“Vaughan is committed to being a key eco-nomic development driver in the GTA by creat-ing jobs, encouraging investment and pursuing
opportunities that will improve our quality of life,” said Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua. “The federal Gas Tax Fund began as a short-term municipal infrastructure program to help local communities keep up with the demands of rapid growth. Today it is a welcome source of funding that assists in the maintenance and revitalization of existing infrastructure, while also supporting new assets in emerging neigh-bourhoods. It has helped the City move for-ward with important projects that contribute to our future as a world-class city.”
20-Minute Makeover Brings the Community Together to Clean Up the City
City gets $8.7 million in 2016, $17.5 million over two years
Mayor Bevilacqua, Regional Councillor Ferri and Ward 2 Councillor Carella take part in 20-Minute Makeover with students and staff from St. Andrews Catholic Elementary School.

Mayors Meet to plan yonge subway extension strategy
At an historic meeting on April 26, the mayors of the three largest municipalities in York Region dis-
cussed how they will work co-operatively to move the Yonge Street Subway extension forward. The meeting of Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua, City of Vaughan, Mayor Dave Barrow, Town of Richmond Hill and Mayor Frank Scarpitti, City of Markham was facili-tated by the Yonge North Group, composed
of three municipal councillors who have been working together for the last four years on this project critical to their municipalities and the GTHA transit network.
As a first step in
their plan, the mayors called on the Province of Ontario to fund the approved Metrolinx recommendation to move forward to the next stage of develop-ment, preliminary de-sign and engineering.
“We have come
together to make a strong case in favour of strategic transit invest-ments in the GTHA to better serve citizens and promote econom-ic growth and jobs,” stated Mayor Bevilac-
qua. “The Yonge Street Subway extension merits immediate consideration because the facts, figures and economic benefits provide sound and intelligent reasons for public in-vestment. We are convinced that it will ad-dress key challenges which we collectively experience and, equally important, provide opportunities for smart growth.”
Mayor Scarpitti addressed the issue of
capacity. “While we are fully aware of the capacity issues on the Yonge Street subway line, we are also informed by the Metrolinx study published in June 2015 that infra-structure improvements and other transit projects will allow the Yonge Street exten-sion to move forward at a strategic pace.”
“This project is shovel ready and shovel
worthy,” said Mayor Barrow. “It has been underway since 2008, has an approved en-vironmental assessment and has undergone extensive public consultation. The route has been delineated as well as the stations.”
As part of the plan developed between the
three municipalities, an information and ac-tion day will be scheduled in May to inform transit users along the Yonge corridor of the current status of the Yonge Subway Exten-sion and the need to make their voices heard at both the federal and provincial levels.
Members of the Yonge North Group in-
clude, Councillor Valerie Burke, City of Markham, Councillor Godwin Chan, Town of Richmond Hill and Alan Shefman, City of Vaughan. All three councillors represent wards that are bounded by Yonge Street.
