Dear Friends,
With our ongoing plans for Solan, this month we have installed new machines like the Ageing Oven, Gridcasters, Industrial casters and Orifice paster.
Our technical team has also successfully increased the charging capacity by introducing pulse charging. We are making constant efforts at our R&D facility to meet the growing demands of our customers in the existing product ranges. We will also be coming up with some new products in the future with more advanced technologies.
We have also received ISO 14001, ISO 9001 and recently got the TS 16949 certification which is aimed towards the development of a quality management system that provides a continuous improvement, emphasizing defect prevention and the reduction of variation and waste in the supply chain. The main goal of this standard is to improve the system and process quality to increase customer satisfaction. It also identifies problems and risks in production processes and supply chain, to eliminate its causes and to examine corrections taken and preventive measures for their effectiveness. The focus lies not on the discovery, but on the avoidance of errors in the first place.
At our second manufacturing unit at Hosur, which has a hilly terrain, we have now started the civil construction which is expected to complete by the mid of next month and then the industrial sheds are expected to be completed in the following two months. With all our plans in place we will soon realize our aim of rolling production from this plant by mid of next year.

600 million people without power – and those were the ones expecting to have power. While surely there is ample blame to go around, it’s not really clear what happened. It could have been the lack of infrastructure investment, the light monsoon weather causing farmers to use more electricity for pumping irrigation water or states taking more than their allotted share of electricity from the grid. But one thing is clear, this power outage ground India’s economy to a halt, left 10% of the world’s population without power and rolled through 22 of India’s 28 states. And that’s not counting the 300 million people there who have no regular access to electricity.
It has become a common sight that angry citizens take to the streets in protesting against the terrible power situation. Some of the areas receive only an hour of electricity every day. Police has to control the law and order situation on account of people’s agitation.
State governments blame Centre for not allocating enough electricity to their states. The Governments try to blame its predecessor. However, people are no longer willing to buy such excuses anymore. Who is to blame for the awful power situation this summer?
Power is on the Concurrent List of the Constitution. Both the Centre and the States need to share their parts of the blame.
The Centre must take the rap for the shortage in generation of power. The peak power deficit-the gap between demand and supply in the summer of 2010-according to the Government's own calculations was 10.8 per cent. The responsibility for distributing available power inefficiently falls on the states. Losses in distribution average over 30 per cent across India.
At the Centre, the power, environment, coal and heavy industries ministries have in various ways acted as obstacles to the addition of capacity.
The Central Electricity Authority (CEA), the main advisory body to the Union power minister, has set a target of 100,000 mw of additional power generation in the period of the 12th five-year plan between 2012 and 2017. That is what is needed to meet the
power demand of an economy forecast to grow at 9 per cent per annum. The Planning Commission accepts this target but Environment Ministry does not which says that the target is "ecologically unsustainable".
Environment Ministry is worried about the impact this additional generation will have on climate change. Seventy per cent of this additional capacity is to be added through coal-based thermal power. Given the dismal record over the past 20 years, Environment Ministry need not worry about the Government meeting its target.
According to Planning Commission estimates, only an average of 50.5 per cent of overall targets was met in the eighth, ninth and tenth five-year plans between 1992 and 2007.
Every major political formation has governed the country in that period none has much to be proud of in terms of performance in the power sector. The target for the 11th plan (2007-2012) has already been revised downwards from 78,700 mw to 62,374 mw. With a year and a half to go until the end of 2012, only around 50 per cent of that revised target has been achieved. Realistically speaking, the Government will do well to hit 60 per cent of its original target by the end of 2012.
The most serious bottleneck in generation is the shortage of coal. At the end of 2007, the gap between the demand and supply of coal was 35 million tonnes. It is expected to be around 83 million tonnes at the end of 2012. Says the mid-term appraisal document of the Planning Commission, "The shortage would have been even more had all the planned coal-based power plants been commissioned on time." By 2017, the shortage is forecast to be 200 million tonnes.
As per the government the shortage of domestic/imported coal affected thermal generation. Some of the blame for the shortage can be laid at the door of the environment minister whose controversial 'no-go' policy announced in 2009 imposed a ban on mining in heavily forested areas. It declared 35 per cent of forest area in nine major coal-mining zones as 'no-go' zones. That led to an immediate halt of mining activity in 203 blocks which had a potential capacity of over 600 million tonnes.

The sport being very popular among the youth of the country, we felt associating with Ten10 was the right platform for us to showcase our strength in automotive technology combined with the tough Indian road conditions.
After a stupendous partnership at the Grand Prix 2011 as the technical associates of the HRT team, Base Batteries have now entered into a new alliance with the Ten10 Racing Team by being the technical partners and official battery suppliers for them at the Indian National Motorcycle Racing Championship 2012 organized jointly by Madras Motor Sports Club & Federation of Motorsports Club of India. It is being held at Coimbatore and Chennai from June 2012 to December 2012.
Ten10 Racing, one of the most promising and talented teams – is aimed at representing the strong cohesion of the partnership: passion for the sport and ambitions for future growth.
Base Batteries, one of the leading battery manufacturers of the country will provide the batteries for the motorcycles which will race at the championship. The special battery manufactured by Base Batteries with cutting-edge technology has been designed especially for high performance use. The battery comes with a strong grid design, equipped with special separators with glass matt.
After our association with HRT Formula1 team, we are very excited to foray our racing technology into Motor cycles. By starting with a motorsport in India, we are now also working on a battery which, if all goes well, would power superbikes
and even a motorsport of superbikes in the future. The sport being very popular among the youth of the country, we felt associating with Ten10 was the right platform for us to showcase our strength in automotive technology combined with the tough Indian road conditions. We are proud of our R&D team for consistently producing the latest technology, giving us an edge to grow over competition.

The Indian National Motorcycle Racing Championship is organized to determine the National Champions in the two wheeler racing
circuit. The championship has churned out champions from India who have gone on to participate in the International circuits.
The riders lined-up for Ten10 team participating in Group C 165CC Class at the Championship are - Sarath Kumar, who recently became the first Indian to secure a podium finish in an International motorcycle racing championship. He currently leads the championship in the “Indian experts – 130 to 165cc 4-stroke – fully modified Group B class”. Sarath set the fastest lap time to have been clocked by any Indian motorcycle during all rounds - his inclination to set records once again brought to the forefront. Other players include Vinoth Kannan, four times National Motorcycle Racing Champion and one time Formula Swift Champion; Arjun EB, Second Runner Up 2011 at National Motorcycle Racing Championship, Group D; S Madan, National Champion 2011 Group D 165 CC; and Sudhakar M, Champion Honda 130CC Cup.
Base has had a long and continuing relationship with sports in India. After sponsoring the Canadian Cricket team during the ICC 2011 World Cup, and being the only Indian company to provide batteries to a Formula One team, Base has now associated itself with Motor Racing, thus reinstating their stand as one of the leading Indian brands who are really concerned and interested in the well being of sports in India.

India, is the second largest producer of
two-wheelers in the world. In the last few years, the
Indian two-wheeler industry has seen spectacular
growth. The country stands next to China and
Japan in terms of production and sales
respectively.
The Indian two-wheeler (2W) industry recorded
sales volumes of 13.4 million units in 2011-121, a
growth of 14.0% over the previous year. In a year
wherein growth in other automobile segments
particularly, passenger vehicle (PV) and medium &
heavy commercial vehicle (M&HCV), slowed down
to single digits - marred by demand slowdown due
to northward movement of inflation, fuel prices and
interest rates - the 14% growth recorded by the 2W
industry remained steady.
According to industry body, the Society of Indian
Automobile Manufacturers, the Indian two-wheeler
industry is expected to post an annual growth of
11-12 per cent, and the market is expected to
double every four years till 2020. According to data
from Nomura and Crisil, as many as 10 million
two-wheelers were sold in India 2011-12. Vehicles
in the executive segment formed the bulk of sales
at 6.5 million, followed by the economy segment
(1.8 million) and premium segment (1.7 million).
As per SIAM data, out of 17.91 million vehicles
produced between 2004-11, a total of 13.37 million
at a whopping 75% are two-wheelers alone.
Two-wheelers may be classified as motorcycles,
scooters and mopeds in which the three constitute
approximately 80% , 15% and 5% respectively.
All motorcycles require battery and the
contemporary scooters also require a battery.
There is an increased pressure on manufacturers
to increase the battery capacity from 2.5Ah to 5Ah
and more to enable the battery to switch-start the
two-wheeler.
There is an estimated aftermarket demand
forecast during 2012-13 for two wheeler battery of
approximately 27.59 million units.
For us, as battery people, the take away is that
annually if there is an estimated consumption of
27.59 million units, that means a total of
approximately 23 lacs batteries are required every
month.
It’s about time we checked our interest, resource
allocation and business sense by analyzing what
share of our revenue comes from this segment. It is
important to realize that your margins in
percentage terms are greater in two wheeler
battery segment than most others.
Furthermore, it requires less space and most
importantly ….. Today’s two wheeler owners are
tomorrow’s car owners !
These are the people who will evolve into a multiple
battery user by owning a car tomorrow and an
inverter in their own house subsequently.
It is a boon for us as battery people to have the
largest youth population in the world which
constitutes majority of two wheeler owners.
