engines, directly on airline websites.• Pricing. All travelers must be ticketed for
international flights.• Use frequent-flier programs.• Learn airline policy for additional equipment

• Choose seats in advance. • Using bulkhead seats. • One person, one seat: know airline rules for car-
seat use on-board.• CARES harness for toddlers/preschoolers.• Beware of low-cost airline extra-small baggage
allowances.• Pack dry snacks and water, avoid sugary snacks.• Pack extra food, toys and clothing.• Avoid toys with small parts. • iPods and DVD players with quiet music or

- In transit, while you’re there…- Your child’s age and interests are most important.- New toys are nice, but not necessary.

Pack It Up! • Less is more.• Start packing early. • Make a packing list –
it’s re-usable!• Use the one-week-of-
clothing rule.• Plan on doing laundry. • Choose comfort over
style.• Use compression sacks. • It is possible for
families to travel with carry-on luggage.
04/12/23Duffy: Traveling With Kids22
Getting Around• Car Rental:
• Car Seat safety laws differ by state and country.
• Additional costs for car seat rental – by day.
• Trains: family fares, multi-trip passes. Great for school-age kids.
• Opt for public transportation where possible – you get to live like a local!

Sleeping Like Babies
Accommodation Choices and Sleep Issues
• Location choices: look for green spaces + accessibility to public transit.
• Trade-offs: Space, amenities + budget.
• Required (for me): Kitchen, laundry, separate sleeping spaces.
• On-site amenities and services

JETLAAAAAG!
There is no magic remedy.
Flight departure and arrival choices are v. important.
Set your watch to destination time.
Fresh air and exercise are the only fail-safe methods.
Children adjust more quickly.
Create a plan for handling disrupted sleep schedules in advance.
It’s worse on the return journey – plan ‘downtime’ day after you return home.

in flight, motion sickness, diarrhea. • Sun safety: slip, slap, slop!• Pack a well-stocked first-aid kit.
